More Bombus perplexus shots, in this case...males. You can tell they are males because they have 13 rather than 12 antennal segments and the hind legs lack the pollen carrying corbicula (bare area) on the tibia. Lemon yellow though! Specimens from Central Pennyslvania from Laura Russo's study there. Photographs by Kelly Graninger.

Taken from the SCGA golf course facing south toward Agua Tibia Mountain (right) and Palomar Mountain (left).
Way back in May I fell off my skateboard and did some serious damage to my foot and ankle (broken tibia, broken 5th metatarsal, ligament damage on the other side of my ankle) so I've spent the whole summer in a cast. Now I've graduated to a boot but it still sucks.
These belong to my favourite spiders! Wrap-around Spiders are very hard to find during the day as they wrap themselves around a twig and disappear completely due to their flat body shape. I uploaded this frontal photo of a male to show the characteristic spines on the pedipalp tibia. Orb-weaving spiders have generally one or two strong spines there, Dolophones males often many more. WAM T100139.
X-Ray monitor displays a healing spiral fracture to the tibia with IM nail, 41/2 months after the accident. An appropriate subject for this week's photo club assignment theme of "contrast". Broken bone courtesy of yours truly. I will be more careful when I ski next winter (:
Thus endeth my bike tour of Taiwan.
You can see a bit of a dip below my right knee cap. The ACL and PCL is torn so the tibia has shifted back. Several bone fragments were pushed off the tibial plateau. This happened when I tripped while walking down the beach to dip my toes in the ocean.
www.saanichnews.com/community/retired-gordon-head-teacher...
ETA I had major surgery almost 4 weeks later that involved 10+ months on crutches after.
ETA Fall 2018: It turns out the bone damage wouldn't heal properly and now I'm awaiting a knee replacement.
ETA March 2019: 7 weeks post-op and I can finally walk a little on my own but I use crutches or a cane when out. Still not ready to ride my bike.
ETA August 2019: I'm walking OK on my own but limp a couple steps when I stand up or when I'm tired. I can ride my bike but with my foot further forward than it should be. It's uncomfortable.
ETA July 2020: I'm possibly worse off than a year ago. The right knee is a little better but not great. The left knee has deteriorated to the point where I can barely walk some days.
ETA 2023: My normal knee has improved but still gives me pain. I've been told the tibial implant in my artificial knee has "shifted" so I'm getting a bone scan to see if I might need a revision.
ETA 2024: still struggling with endurance in terms of tolerating long periods of standing/sitting but I'm finally feeling like I might get back to some kind of work.
A couple more shots of Andrena asteris, one male, and one female. Note the super fluffy hairs on the hind tibia of the female. Nearly all of the fall Andrena have this fluffiness, perhaps because many of them are specialists on Asteraceae which maybe needsfluffy pollen collecting hairs in order to transport pollen well … Or maybe not

Pictures of my broken leg and healing progression from a ski accident in Beaver Creek, CO.
I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.
Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.
I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

Moss Carder Bee - Bombus muscorum - probably worker
A relaxed gymnastic stance , hanging from the forelegs only, on Borage - Borago officinalis - Starflower.
A paté of pollen is adhered to the hind tibia.
The Moss Carder Bumble is a common bee here, though uncommon on a greatly reduced 20th C range in the UK. found in open flower-rich grasslands where it shows a strong preference for clover, knapweed, red bartsia and similar flower species. The species is more frequent in the north and west, and is largely coastal in the south. Males, workers and queens are similar in appearance, ginger-brown all over with no clearly-delineated tail. The abdomen is usually paler than the thorax, and almost appears blonde in some specimens, often with a more intense colour on the second abdominal segment.
Queens, workers and males all have a vibrant ginger thorax and a pale ginger/cream abdomen which has a distinct yellow wash in fresh individuals. The hair is short, dense and appears velvety.
Males have whitish facial hairs.
Slightly larger than the other carder bumblebees, but is often indistinguishable from the Brown-banded Carder Bee. Some Scottish populations have black haired undersides.
Only three species (Common carder, Bombus pascuorum; Moss carder, Bombus muscorum; and Brown-banded carder) are all-ginger, and consequently the trio can be easily split off from other bumblebees.
Separating the three ginger carders can be considerably harder. The Moss carder bee has no black hairs on the abdomen (unlike the Common carder) and also has no black hairs on the thorax (Brown-banded carder bee has a thin scattering of black hairs around and above the wing bases).
Borage is not only a honey plant, but also one of the most famous ancient spices and a valuable herb. It is traditionally cultivated as a vegetable type and spice, but it is also grown for pharmaceutical purposes, from the oil extracted from its seeds often called “star flower oil” or “borage oil”.
From the descriptions of Dioscorides and Pliny the Elder, borage was probably the magical plant used to make a drink of oblivion mentioned in the Homer’s “Odyssey”. Borage has been used in different ways known from ancient times.
Apart from being used as one of the main honey plants in beekeeping, borage is also used in:
Medicine - - Its leaves and flowers have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and a tranquilising effect. It is also used as a diuretic and has a beneficial effect for stomach, kidney and rheumatic pains.
Cosmetics - - The plant is used as an ingredient of many skin rejuvenating lotions and creams.
Organic farming - - It is mainly used for soil fertilisation.
Experienced beekeepers point out that continual rain washed the nectar out of most blossoms, because they face upwards, so there was very little forage for pollinators. Borage is one of the few nectar-rich plants whose flowers hang down, and still feeds bees in rainy weather.

Bee with pollen basket in Cape gooseberry flower

The pollen basket or corbicula (plural corbiculae) is part of the tibia on the hind legs of certain species of bees. They use the structure in harvesting pollen and returning it to the nest or hive. Other species of bee have scopae instead.
