My "graduation" from Physical Therapy for my broken leg was today! I still have work to do at home, but this is a big "step" and on Leap Day!

This is a rough composite of two xrays. You can see the metal plate along the side of the tibia from a side-on view; it's actually much wider and weird looking and curves around at the top of the tibia and around the top of the fibula. There are (I think) about 8 screws total, and yeah, you're not imagining it; those screws do go all the way through the bone. One of them I can feel along the lower part of my leg.

Six weeks this week since I torqued the bone into cracking all to hell. The docs tell me I'm doing great on healing and getting my mobility back. It's all too slow for me, but things are slowly improving. I got on a trampoline and hopped around on my good leg at physical therapy this week, which was way scarier than it sounds, hopping up steps and onto the unstable surface of the tramp with my one wimpy good leg.

I find myself much more fearful of things since this whole misadventure; I've had a hard time getting proficient on crutches due to lack of strength as well as fear; I have to build my confidence back up. I find the fear of going through massive pain again coloring my choices and my confidence in doing things like hopping up and down steps with crutches. Just watching other people do things like running up or down concrete steps has me cringing. Hopefully it will pass, because honestly I don't like this fearful self.

Sphecodes f. Not sure about this one I think the punctures behind the ocelli make this monilicornis, gibbus or reticulatus. The white hairs on the hind tibia with red spines means monilicornis but the head shape is wrong. The punctures on T 2, 3 and 4 suggest reticulatus rather than gibbus., but I'm concerned I've got the head punctures wrong from the beginning, need help.

What I like is that my consultant has a window open at the bottom of the screen with Live Cricket scores!!! Hehehe!!!

The robber fly is a predatory insect that can take down insects in flight that are twice as big as itself. It has large compound eyes designed to track prey. They have a moustache of bristles called a mystax that serves to protect the robber fly when it is attacking prey. It's powerful wings can carry captured prey that are twice or more their size. They have a long curved beak (proboscis) that pierces prey, injects poison and digestive enzymes, and then serves to ingest prey. They often carry small prey by impaling them on this beak. Their long and powerful legs can reach around and hold larger insects. The robber fly is the king of insect predators due to it's incredible swiftness and ferocity.

Here's what a type II angulated segmental open tibia fracture looks like after an IM nail (rod) has been inserted. This was 3 days post-op. Believe it or not I kept my foot elevated and it was still this swollen. The bruises took another couple of days to develop.

Situated along the Palomar mountain range of Southern California, is Agua Tibia Wilderness. I came here to photograph the native wildlife and learn as much about their shrinking habitat as possible. Minutes from Temecula, this wilderness provides critical refuge for many of the area's native plants and animals; including the Horned Lizard.

This trailhead starts at the end of Dripping Springs campground, just past a creekbed. You pass through a grove of Oak trees before an expanse of chaparral dominated by Red Shanks. During Summer these plants burst with white flowers. This can be a strenuous hike, especially if you go during Summer, so make sure to bring plenty of water. An adventure pass ($5) is required to park at the campgrounds.

I love fortifications in rock... add it to a fossil and I can't resist!

She went missing the day before Thanksgiving and was found to have crawled out from under the house the day after when I'd finally started the lost my cat weeping after searching and calling for her a last time, and my son didn't want to hear that and went for a last search.

Infection set in and the leg had to be amputated. I'm thankful we found her, and that I had the money to fix her that year.

I had another X-Ray of my leg today, now it's just over 7 weeks from the accident and the fracture has not yet healed. :0(

I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.

Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.

I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

She hasn't tortured me too horribly. Actually she was very nice to me.

The middle tibia has just a single anterodorsal bristle (2-3 present in L. richardsi).

This morning I went for Xrays and a visit to the orthopedic surgeon. It has been two months since I broke the tibia and fibular on my left leg in a motorbike accident.

I was praying that I could loose the aircast and the crutches, but alas the Doctor says I shall have at least another 6 weeks (possibly 10). He is pleased with the progress and the leg is healing. However, an open (compound) fracture of this nature does take a little longer to heal. When I had the surgery the surgeon said it would take about 18 weeks, but somehow I thought I could get along a bit sooner than that. In this picture you can see the titanium pin with two screws in the ankle and a screw in the knee. The fractures on towards the left of the picture.

I leave for Pietermaritzburg on the Power jet in a little while. It is going to be fun at the mighty men of God conference! I'll send some updates as I can.

Female found drowned on July 16th, 2008. Body length: 8 mm. Forewing length: 5.7 mm. Ovipositor length (visible part): 3.23 mm. Ovipositor 1.25x times as long as hind tibia. Ovipositor sheaths: 2.40 mm. Ovipositor sheaths 0.93 times as long as hind tibia. HEAD: Antenna with 23 flagellar segments, basal 5 flagellomeres black, 4 central flagellomeres ivory white and the 14 apical flagellomeres black. F1 length/width ratio: 29:4=7.25. F3 length/width ratio: 21:3= 7. Clypeus narrow and obviously convex, apically rounded and separated from the face by a well-defined groove. Clypeus with a medial tubercle or tooth. Mandible twice its width at midpoint. Mandible two-toothed, tooth with the same length. Cheeks 0.72 times as long as the width of the mandibular base. Frons not depressed. MESOSOMA: Mesopleuron and metapleuron distinctly wrinkled. Mesosoma black, except subalar prominence and the tip of scutellum which are ivory white. Mesoscutum convex, relatively narrow, lacking transverse rugae, with notaulices extending beyond the centre of mesoscutum. Mesoscutum densely sculpted, matte, with fine points. Mesopleuron with a sinuated sternaulus covering almost all its length. Propodeum with carinae, but only with two transverse carinae, basal longitudinal carinae unclear or unknown. Area horizontalis 1.3 times as long as area petiolaris. Propodeal spiracles almost rounded, length/width ratio less than 1,1. Metanotum without sublateral posterior projections. METASOMA: Sclerotized part of 1st sternite extending to the posterior third of the segment. 1st metasomal segment narrow basally and gradually widened apically, without a basal lateral tooth. First metasomal spiracle beyond the middle, at 0.58x the length of first metasomal segment. Postpetiolus with not very noticeable points. Second metasomal tergite with very dense microsculpture and fairly dense haired. Second tergite as long as its maximum width seen from above. Seventh tergite with a big ivory spot. Eight tergite dorsally ivory white. Ovipositor sheaths thinner and flexible. Lower half of the ovipositor toothed apically. Ovipositor tip (from the notch to the apex) 3.0 times as long as high. WINGS: Fore wings with 2m-cu vein present, with one bulla, subvertical, reaching subdiscoidal vein in a right angle. Fore wing with an areolet with convergent sides. Subdiscoideus vein reaching postnervulus about its middle. Hindwing with the medial part of the medial vein slightly curved and moderately curved at the apical 0.6x part. Hind wing with axillary vein parallel to the anal margin, its apex curved to the margin. LEGS: Hind coxa with a weakly printed area. Legs mostly deep brown, with black coxae and other parts also black. Femur III length/width ratio: 5.0. Hind tibia length: 2.57 mm. Second segment of the tarsi 1.29 times as long as the fifth segment.

In the otherworldly, sobering Paris Catacombs. The remains of perhaps 5 million human beings were disinterred from their original resting places around the city and brought down into the ancient underground Limestone quarries for storage.

Truly a lesson in the temporary nature of life.

The walls are made of stacked femurs and tibias, skulls are decorations, and the smaller bones from the rest of the body are piled in behind the wall.
