My Ultramarathon days are postponed after a triple break in my right leg walking to the shops on wednesday. 3 days of being in hospital later and there are now 4 titanium screws holding my leg together and am on crutches for the foreseeable future. Worst case scenario is 6 months to be fully back to fitness. Bollocks.

This hoverfly has a black stripe down its face and the basal half of the hind tibia is brownish yellow, April - October in many open habitats, also called the Sun Fly as it likes to bask, favours damp habitats.

The larvae inhabit rotting matter such as liquid manure,

Hover flies are the most easily recognizable of the flies due to their often wasp-like or bee-like appearance and their ability to hover.

These superb aerial acrobats can move in all directions, including backwards, and can hold a fixed position in the air even in gusty conditions.

The adults are typically slender-bodied with black and yellow or white stripes; some are stout and hairt.

The eyes are large and in males meet on top of the head.

The wings have a characteristic false vein running down the middle ( a simple thickening of the wing membrane ) and a false margin at the edge ( the joining together of the outer wing veins ).

Despite the warning, wasp-like markings, and the bee-like appearance of many species, hover flies are harmless nectar feeders.

The larvae of a few species can be pests of cultivated bulbs.

This ecstatic procession features two satyrs and a female follower of Dionysos (Bacchus), god of wine. The satyr and maenad at the front play pipes and a small drum. The other satyr carries a thyrsos, Dionysos' staff, and is accompanied by a panther, recalling the god's exotic origins. The relief was made in the Roman period, but the figures derive from Attic prototypes of the 4th century BC.

This was the first of two surgeries. its meant to stabilize the bones more effectively than the simple splint i've had for the past week, so that the tissue that had been damaged by the breaking bone can heal enough that they can put in a plate and some screws.

 

surgery was without incident as far as i know, but recovery has been tough. i spent four hours in the recovery room trying to stabilize a high fever and trying various pain meds before they put in a dilaudid pump and let me apply medication myself as needed. i've had a hard time sleeping at all since then so now i'm very tired, plus still trying to get over the mild fever that won't go away.

 

From left to right:

- The 20+ year old crutches I used to get to the ER.

- The modern crutches I borrowed from a friend.

- The cane I am currently using.

 

And yes, I removed the shoulder pads from the crutches on purpose. They are evil. They just encourage you to put weight on your armpits and hamper you from using the crutches correctly.

 

Also, while I am ranting, bring back wooden crutches. Much more solid feeling than the modern aluminum ones.

Poor little Pixie is so broken... her pelvis is broken, her femur is broken, her tibia is broken, her fibula is broken and her tendons are torn :-(

 

She was hit by a car (possibly multiple times, at different times)

Tomorrow the vet will sedate her so we can X-ray the rest of her body to make sure nothing else is broken. I am so happy I was able to get her before leaving town!!

Yes horned lizards can be that adorable! This little guy attempted to flee at our approach on the trail, but tumbled headlong into a spider web and got stuck! I removed the web off its face, so it allowed me a portrait before continuing on proper zen.

Alex broke his leg playing tackle football with no equipment on, in gym class, at school, while being supervised by the gym teacher on Tuesday. We've been to the ER, an orthopedic specialist, and had an MRI at the same imaging center the Buffalo Bills go to.

I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.

 

Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.

I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

The pale tip to the tibia helps separate it from summer generation rosae.

Geotrupes stercorarius I think, as there are two ridges on the hind tibia. These impressive beasts are becoming rarer and are always nice to find.

De achterpoot van een werkbij heeft op de scheen (tibia) twee voorzieningen voor het verzamelen van stuifmeel:

The pollen basket or corbicula (plural corbiculae) is part of the tibia on the hind legs of certain species of bees. They use the structure in harvesting pollen and returning it to the nest or hive. Other species of bee have scopae instead.

Michael Geiser The prolonged fore tibia (with the tarsus inserted before the end) is a good character for the genus.

Gnaptor spinimanus is a beetle from the family of black beetles (Tenebrionidae) and the subfamily Tenebrioninae. The genus Gnaptor is limited to Eurasia and represented by the traditional view in Europe only by the species Gnaptor spinimanus . [1] According to recent authors Gnaptor spinimanus from the on Greece (Peloponnese) limited kind Gnaptor boryi to distinguish. [2] [3]

 

Comment on the name and synonyms

The species is first described in 1781 by Pallas under the name Tenebrio spinimanus . [4] The species name spinimanus is lat. Derived Spina, for mandrel and Manus for hand (forefoot). [5] Pallas remarks in its style description tibiis primoribus spina Robustissima (lat. At the feet of the front legs with a very robust mandrel ). [4]

 

Since males and females differ greatly, they were initially described as different species ( Pimelia laevigata , Pimelia glabrata , Blaps laevigata , Petrobius spinimanus ). Over several revisions of the genus Gnaptor were distinguished in Europe first two good ways Gnaptor spinimanus and Gnaptor boryi (in honor of Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent ) synonymous with Gnaptor graecus , [6] then viewed both ways than one, [ 7] the latter has recently been divided again into the two species just mentioned. [3]

 

The genus name Gnaptor has been attributed to various authors, such as Solier the insect merchant Megerle . [8] Fischer von Waldheim calls himself as an author (Fischer), but noted at the same time that he did not know with which grammatical gender , the word Gnaptor of Dejean , storm , Faldermann or Megerle was used. [9] According to current opinion is Brullé 1832 the author. Brullé mentions the beetle named Gnaptor spinimanus in the introduction to his expedition report on the Morea Expeditionwith the remark that Fischer von Waldheim had rightly suggested that the beetle belong to a new genus (namely Gnaptor ). [10] In describing himself Brullé but selects the name Petrobius spinimanus and noted in a footnote to the fact that the beetle in the collections of Paris under the generic name Gnaptor is known. Brullé goes on to say that, assuming that name had been published by Fischer von Waldheim, he used the name Gnaptor in the introduction to the book . After that, however, he found that this assumption was false and the name Gnaptorhad not been published, so he renamed the new genus in Petrobius . [10] However, Brullé recognized in a row that the name Petrobius was already taken in a different order of insects and changed him among the corrections to his expedition report again in Gnaptor . [11]

 

The word Gnáptor is from altgr. γνάπτειν, κνάπτειν, gnaptein frequent knaptein for walken and the corresponding exporting person γναπτωρ Gnaptor , the Tuchwalker , derived. [12] [9] And the long extension of the rail of the front leg of the beetle was probably associated with the implement of Walker cloth, the fulling rod. The invalid genus name Petrobius (from ancient Greek πετρα petra for stone and βίος bíos for habitat) refers to the occurrence of the beetle in rocky, dry areas.

The robustly built, bulky beetle is reminiscent of the species of the genus Blaps and is 18 to 24 millimeters long. He is weak shiny black. In cross-section, especially the female is strongly curved. The female is also much rounder in outline than the male (Fig. 1)

 

The head is flat and wide, it narrows in front view roughly trapezoidal. The base of the head is cut off and shaped neck in the neck shield retracted. The head is slightly wider than long and tightly dotted (Fig. 5 left C). The head shield is slightly concave at the front. The eyes(Fig. 2) are three times as wide as long, scarcely arched and slightly kidney-shaped. The eleven-membered antennae (Fig. 7) are as long as the pronotum, cord-shaped and only slightly thickening towards the tip; the third limb is clearly the longest, longer than the fourth and fifth together, limbs four to seven are trapezoidal; three penultimate limbs roundish to lentiform, and a brownish pubescent like the terminal limb dull, the latter a little narrower, about as long as wide and pointed ending. The deflection of the probes is concealed at the top by an extension of the cheeks (Fig. 2, Fig. 7). The upper lipis wider than long and slightly outlined at the front. The chin (red in Fig. 4 C) narrows to the base so that the deflection of the lower jaw is visible. The lower jaws (light blue in Fig. 4 C) carry an inwardly directed two-pointed horn hook at the top of the inner drawer (Fig. 4 D). The upper jaw ends in a double point (Fig. 4 A). The lower lip (in Fig. 4 C light green) is zweilappig and heart-shaped, the Lippeentaster (in Fig. 4 C dark green) three-parted with epistemic end member. The pine buttons (in Fig. 4 C dark blue) are four-limbed, curved the anvil-shaped end member and truncated.

 

The pronotum is almost flattened, the front edge little cut out and slightly wider than the head, the rear edge just cut off and as wide as the base of the elytra. The sides are rounded rather convex in front of the middle and narrow towards the back in a straight line or slightly concave, giving the pronotum a slightly heart-shaped appearance. The back angles are dull. The pronotum is nearly as long as at the base wide, overall much wider than long. The punctation is fine and fairly uniform, somewhat flatter and slightly less dense than on the head, but denser and more powerful than the puncture of the canopy (Figure 5, pinpoint puncture P). The pronotum is finely edged on the side, the margin disappears in the middle and at the base.

 

The label is very small, triangular and much wider than long.

 

The elytratogether are wider than the pronotum, in the females much wider and almost spherical, in the male only slightly wider and more ovate. In addition to the very weak and inconspicuous puncturing the wing-covers are weak leather-like and predominantly cross-wrinkled (Fig. 5 right E), in females stronger than in males. Flat recessed longitudinal stripes can be indicated. The elytra have broad false false epidenduses on the side (in Fig. 6 green tinted on the right) and adjoining very narrow, true epiphenes (red tinted red in Fig. 6), which extend to the suture angle. The elytra are steeply sloping in the back and then horizontally ending together bluntly pointed. The tip is barely visible from above in the male, not visible in the female (Fig. 1, Fig. 6 left female from diagonally behind). The elytra are at theFused together seam. Skin wings are missing.

 

The abdomen shows five visible abdominal sterns . Between the third and fourth as well as the fourth and fifth sternites of the abdomen is a shiny skin (Fig. 9 for better visibility of the articular skins from diagonally behind).

 

The joint cavities of the mid-hipsare open at the sides (Fig. 10 white arrow). If the hips are turned so that the legs are pointing backwards, the troch- anus becomes visible (Fig. 10 tinged red). The legs are strong and relatively short. The legs are hollowed out on the bottom flat trough-like. The inner edge of the anterior splints bears a large finger-like spine in both sexes, while the male has a much smaller second spine next to it (Fig. 3 middle green arrow). In females, the rails narrow forward and are there barely wider than the end spine (Figure 3 left), the male narrow the rails initially too, but are wider again just before the end and there are significantly wider than the large end spine, which is significantly smaller than that of the female (Fig. 3, right). In the middle and rear leg pair, both sexes wear two medium-sized thorns at the end of the rail. The tarsi of the hind legs are four-limbed, those of the other legs five-limbed. The hind rails are not bent in the male, the females slightly bent. The limbs of the fore-tars carry at the front edge of the underside very short densely-packed hairs, which form a kind of felt. In the females and also in the males ofGnaptor boryi , these felt pads are limited to the anterior corners of all limbs of the forewarning, but in the case of the males of Gnaptor spinimanus , the entire front edge is hairy on the first two limbs (brush stain, Fig. 8 green arrows) on the third and fourth limbs are the felt pads also limited to the front corners (Fig. 8 blue arrows). Biology

The species is very heat loving. The beetle can be found from early spring to summer in dry places with loose vegetation, such as in vineyards, quarries, sunny sunken roads and on dry forest edges. In more southerly countries, it is found in grassy steppes with shrubs in mountainous and stony terrain, where it crawls slowly around on a bright day, but it likes to remain under a protection (pholeophil), for instance under stones or under the dead leaves at the bottom of herbaceous plants. As a special feature it is mentioned that in Hungary a live specimen was found on snow in December. [15] The beetle has stink glands in its defense. [16] It feeds on plant remains (phytodetritophag).

 

The larvae live under stones and in the upper layers of the earth. The development is probably biennial. [17]

The "fan-tailed" or "flag-tailed" centipedes of the genus Alipes have enlarged tibia and tarsi on their last pair of legs forming large and vividly colored leaflike structures.

When irritated the centipede swings the terminal legs from side to side and stridulates. If irritated furhter the legs are often autotomized and continue to stridulate and move, drawing the attention of would be predators while the centipede flees to safety.

 

Pictured is Alipes multicostis, a rarely imported species that grows more than twice as long as the more commonly kept Alipes grandidieri.
