The pollen basket or corbicula is part of the tibia on the hind legs of the four related lineages of apid bees that used to comprise the family Apidae: the honey bees, bumblebees, stingless bees, and orchid bees. The corbicula ("little basket") is a polished cavity surrounded by a fringe of hairs, into which the pollen is placed; most other bees possess a structure called the scopa, which is similar in function, but is a dense mass of branched hairs into which pollen is pressed, with pollen grains held in place in the narrow spaces between the hairs. A honey bee moistens the forelegs with a protruding tongue and brushes the pollen that has collected on head, body and forward appendages to the hind legs. The pollen is transferred to the pollen comb on the hind legs and then combed, pressed, compacted, and transferred to the corbicula on the outside surface of the tibia of the hind legs. A single hair functions as a pin that secures the middle of the pollen load. Honey and/or nectar is used to moisten the dry pollen, producing the product known as bee pollen or bee bread. The mixing of the pollen with nectar or honey changes the color of the pollen. The color of the pollen can identify the pollen source.

Chadian military doctors perform surgery to repair a fractured tibia April 13 at the Military Teaching Hospital in N’Djamena, Chad. A Chadian soldier who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, which caused his fracture. Doctors performed an external fixation procedure as a team of U.S. military medical professionals observed. The U.S. team came to Chad to participate in Medical Readiness and Training Exercise 15-3 known as MEDRETE 15-3. The exercise is a joint effort between the Chadian government, U.S. Army Africa, the Army Reserve Medical Command and the 7th Civil Support Command. MEDRETE 15-3 serves as an opportunity for U.S. and Chadian forces to hone and strengthen their life saving skills as well as reinforce the partnership between both countries. Orthoses were traditionally made by following a tracing of the extremity with measurements to assist in creating a well fitted device. Later the advent of plastics as a material of choice for construction necessitated the idea of creating a plaster of Paris mold of the body part in question. This method extensively is still used throughout the industry. Currently CAD/CAM, CNC machines and even 3D printing are involved in orthotic manufacture.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of my left knee, pathology noted. I tore my anterior cruciate ligament skiing on March 18th, these images (in the form of digital stacks) were captured on March 24th, I didn't get the diagnosis until March 29th, and then underwent surgery to reconstruct the ACL on April 4th. Good times.

 

(Left) Bone bruising--an extreme valgus (inward twisting) force of the knee resulted in impact between the posterior-lateral part of the tibia and anterior-lateral part of the femur. Fluid infiltration, or bruising, in the bones shows up as those encircled diffuse white clouds. Arthroscopic examination during the surgery revealed no cartilage damage. While bone bruising is a common concomitant observation in ACL injuries, the consequences of it, if any, are unclear.

Interestingly, torn medial collateral ligaments (MCLs) can heal themselves, but not ACLs because of the curious properties of the intra-articular environment that prevents platelet aggregation on the damaged ligament and the resultant secretion of growth hormones necessary to promote the initial healing process. Efforts to repair a torn ACL by suturing the severed ends result in a 40% re-rupturing rate. Thus, an ACL must be reconstructed using a graft, either from one's own tissues (patellar tendon, hamstring tendon or quadricep thing) or a cadaver (Achille's, hamstring or patellar tendon).

 

Self, or autografts, are much more resilient than cadaver grafts, heal faster, and have a lower failure rate. This, I am presuming is because cadaver grafts must be UV irradiated to kill potential contaminating viruses (HIV, hepatitis C, etc.), and further processed to remove all cellular material which would otherwise cause one's body to mount an immune response against the graft and reject it; plus, it's subsequently frozen for storage, and then later thawed for the surgery.

One thing to take into consideration when choosing to utilize a self or "autograft" is the donor site morbidity. In other words, wherever they extract the graft from, that is another thing that must heal. The physical rehabilitation of the knee and the donor site is a factor to take into consideration. Functionally, extraction of the patellar tendon graft often results in imbalance in the kneecap tracking, leading to patellofemoral pain and knee irritation/inflammation from increased use. The patellar tendon also takes time to heal and can be prone to tendinitis (jumper's knee). These two factors, which alter the patella tracking, in the long term, also contribute to the development of osteoarthritis of the knee cap.

This was given to me at physio yesterday.

It shows the staple in the femur and 2 screws in the tibia of my left knee.

My mother broke both her left tibia and fibula.

 

My parents were fishing around Niagara Falls. I wasn't there.

 

I think she caught a fish. The fish struggled off the hook and got away. My mom suddenly realized she was toeing the edge of a five foot ledge. She lost balance and fell forward. She landed at a bad angle on the concrete beneath.

 

My father ran over and checked her injury. He moved from her thigh to her leg. When he lifted up her left leg, the foot drooped from the break down.

 

My dad called an ambulance and they rushed her to Niagara General Hospital. All the emergency staff there wondered how she broke her leg. And they were all familiar with the place where she fell.

 

They got to the hospital at 12:30pm. I drove there as soon as I heard which hospital they were at. I got there around 1:45pm. The doctor finally showed up at 4:30pm.

 

Because the Ontario Health system prioritize patients according to the seriousness of their conditions, the doctor could not guarantee she will get a surgery that night. She had a broken leg... but she wasn't dying...yet...

 

Fortunately, she went into surgery at 9:00pm. She came out at around 12:20am. Everything went well. Mom stayed in the hospital for three more days until her condition improved and the pain lessened. It'll take at least another three months before she could walk again.

 

Thank God for a good Canadian health care system. The hospital staff were very helpful and friendly. My mom got her daily dose of morphine. Yum. Want some? Break a leg... kidding, it's very painful.

An MRI Scan of the Lower Leg (Calf, Tibia, Fibula) can detect fractures, degenerative joint disease (arthritis), infections of the bone, injury to and infections and tumors of muscles, tendons and nearby soft tissues.

The Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax) is the commonest 'drone' fly, so called because they mimic bee drones (male hive bees). It is widespread and very common throughout Britain.

 

The orange marks on the abdomen are variable so they are not a reliable identification feature, though most specimens have a single pair near to the thorax. This hoverfly also has a very noticeable dark face stripe and curved rear tibia. It differs from E. pertinax in having dark front tarsi and banana-shaped rear tibia.

 

E. tenax favours gardens and hedgerows, and can be seen

all year round. The female hibernates in buildings and crevices but will emerge on warm days in late winter, leading to it being seen in virtually every month of the year.

 

The larvae live in organically rich polluted rivers and drains, the run off from dung, silage heaps, etc.
