Is it your thyroid?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The thyroid gland is a follicular endocrine gland composed of follicles which are spherical units storing hormones. The follicles, of variable size, are made up of a simple cuboidal epithelium (pink) and filled with a glycoprotein (sky blue) bound to the thyroid hormones. Thyroid gland is a ductless gland (= endocrine), the hormones diffusing directly into the blood stream. In elasmobranchs the thyroid gland forms a discrete encapsulated organ, pear-shaped (see also album P12d).

SAVUSAVU, Fiji (June 15, 2015) Cmdr. Michelle Arnold performs thyroid surgery on a Fijian patient aboard the hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) during Pacific Partnership 2015. Mercy is currently in Savusavu, Fiji for its first mission port of PP15. Pacific Partnership is in its tenth iteration and is the largest annual multilateral humanitarian assistance and disaster relief preparedness mission conducted in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. While training for crisis conditions, Pacific Partnership missions to date have provided medical care to approximately 270,000 patients and veterinary services to more than 38,000 animals. Additionally, PP15 has provided critical infrastructure development to host nations through the completion of more than 180 engineering projects. This drug actually is medically useful, even today, for people with low thyroid function. It's made by dessicating the thyroid glands of cows, and pigs. When it's all dried out, you grind it up, and cover it in chocolate like an M&M. I'm getting hungry just looking at 'em.

Open air meeting at Washington, D.C., March 1913, calling upon Congress to pass the national woman suffrage amendment. This photograph shows Mrs. John Rogers, sister-in-law of former Secretary of War, Stimpson [Stimson], and a member of the Advisory Council of the Congressional Union for Women Suffrage, speaking.Photographer: Buck 1913 Mar. Summary: Open-air photograph of Elizabeth S. Rogers speaking, half-length, in profile, wearing fur coat and hat. A man in bowler hat and a woman in hat with scarf securing it to her head partially visible in lower left and lower right corners of print. Building [Corcoran Museum of Art] in background.

Back of print is labeled by hand in pencil: "Mrs. John Rogers--speaking in front of old Corcoran Art Gallery" and on front in red pen "Buck 32." Rogers was the sister-in-law of Henry Lewis Stimson (1867-1950).

Elizabeth S. Rogers (Mrs. John Rogers, Jr.), of New York City, was the wife of a prominent thyroid specialist and a descendent of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was a civic reformer working to improve New York public schools and win suffrage in the state of New York before joining the national suffrage movement. She was chairman of the Advisory Council of the NWP and one of the most forceful speakers in the "Prison Special" tour of the country, during which suffragists spoke of experience in jail. She was arrested July 14, 1917 picketing the White House and was sentenced to 60 days in Occoquan Workhouse, but was pardoned by President Woodrow Wilson after three days. In the movie Crash, Don Cheadle’s character says, “You have to crash to feel anything.” That was profound for me. I needed to be hit hard to grow and heal. Having cancer is a journey that continues. There are always blood tests and medications to take. But it is a constant reminder for me to feel joy and gratitude for my health and family.

The biggest gift I have taken from having cancer is complete acceptance of self and not worrying about other people’s opinions of me. It is very liberating and was a tremendous shift in how I lived my life. A friend of mine put it very simply, “Oh, you mean you’re telling me you’re human?”

Endocrinology (from endocrine + -ology) is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. It is also concerned with the integration of developmental events proliferation, growth, and differentiation, and the psychological or behavioral activities of metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sleep, digestion, respiration, excretion, mood, stress, lactation, movement, reproduction, and sensory perception caused by hormones. Specializations include behavioral endocrinology[1][2][3] and comparative endocrinology.

The endocrine system consists of several glands, all in different parts of the body, that secrete hormones directly into the blood rather than into a duct system. Therefore, endocrine glands are regarded as ductless glands. Hormones have many different functions and modes of action; one hormone may have several effects on different target organs, and, conversely, one target organ

Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system in the human body. This is a system of glands which secrete hormones. Hormones are chemicals which affect the actions of different organ systems in the body. Examples include thyroid hormone, growth hormone, and insulin. The endocrine system involves a number of feedback mechanisms, so that often one hormone (such as thyroid stimulating hormone) will control the action or release of another secondary hormone (such as thyroid hormone). If there is too much of the secondary hormone, it may provide negative feedback to the primary hormone, maintaining homeostasis.

In the original 1902 definition by Bayliss and Starling (see below), they specified that, to be classified as a hormone, a chemical must be produced by an organ, be released (in small amounts) into the blood, and be transported by the blood to a distant organ to exert its specific function. This definition holds for most "classical" hormones, but there are also paracrine mechanisms (chemical communication between cells within a tissue or organ), autocrine signals (a chemical that acts on the same cell), and intracrine signals (a chemical that acts within the same cell).[4] A neuroendocrine signal is a "classical" hormone that is released into the blood by a neurosecretory neuron (see article on neuroendocrinology).

The nuclei are oval, crowded, and overlapping.

This is an unusual variant of follicular neoplasm of the thyroid gland. It has been described in follicular adenomas, however, this lesion did show destructive capsular invasion.

Very swollen after having a tumour the size of a tennis ball removed with the entire thyroid and over 53 lymphnodes, one with a cancer the size of a golf ball. I was very lucky; the cancer was heading up to my brain and down to my lungs- I would of had months to live. Radiotherapy next.

When thyroid colloid is extravasated from thyroid follicles and comes into contact with connective tissue a foreign body giant cell reaction occurs. This can occur as the result of thyroidoitis, trauma and needle biopsy.
