Ready to start my day !! My recuperation from surgery is better and soon I will take the tape out and see my scar for the first time.
Today is a sad day for the people that knew the three stray cats that lived together on the side of one of the buildings in the town of Piscataway. For the past week or two Maggie has not been eating much and has been getting very thin. We think she developed a thyroid problem, which is common in older cats. I noticed last Tuesday she was not her usual self and after talking to others that knew Chelsea, Santana and Maggie, they all agreed something was wrong with her.
I went there this past Friday and Maggie did not jump into my FedEx truck the second I pulled up to where the three cats lived. She was just sitting on the sidewalk and had a distant look in her eyes. She did eat some wet food I gave her, but I knew something was wrong. I gave her a few kisses and she did give me the usual head bumps (the way she will kiss you) and was purring in return. I went to see the cats yesterday (Sunday) and I did not see Maggie.
This morning one of the girls at work there noticed Maggie in the bushes about a foot behind the house we built for the cats nearest the sidewalk. Maggie had died sometime over the weekend.
We think all three of the strays are between the ages of 7-10 years old. I first met Chelsea, Santana and Maggie back in March of 2009. Maggie was always the first to jump in my truck or even my car to say hello and to see what kind of food I bought with me. Maggie was the one who also helped me eat rice pudding the few times I would bring it as a snack for myself. Maggie always drove Chelsea crazy but the three cats always stuck together.
Chelsea and Santana are still doing good and they will continue to be fed daily and looked after. The houses we made for them are still there and they keep inside them when it is cold or wet outside.
The workers put Maggie in a blanket and she will be buried near where she lived. We will put a marker over the burial site and I will print a picture or something to put there too.
You will not be forgotten, Mags. She was annoying and a pest to Chelsea, but she also could make you laugh and forgive her too at the same time.
Goodbye honey, and thanks !!!

14-01. Today was not the greatest of days. 2.5 years ago I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid and after all that time of the doctor telling me that the medication he gave me should take it back to normal and "cure" me I found out today that it doesn't look likely. I was told that I now have to kill my thyroid off either by having it removed by surgery or by taking radioiodine. I will then be on thyroxine for the rest of my life. Joy. I wasn't very happy of being told this and then having to make a decision straight away so I have to go back in March (the day before my birthday, again - joy) and discuss it again then. I just can't wait to feel better again - not being constantly tired all the time will be the best thing.
An underactive or overactive Thyroid gland is a common cause of concern for many. Learn about Thyroid problems such as – Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism and know the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment.
My first time making fish stock. I am using two carcasses from wild-caught Thai snapper. Fish heads should be included -- they include the thyroids which are full of iodine. Whole Foods filleted them for me -- and made me a separate package of bones and heads. Easy-peasy!

A review of medical records of patients treated at an academic tertiary care center suggests that obese patients present to their physicians with more advanced stage and more aggressive forms of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), according to a report published Online First by Archives of Surgery.
Thyroid cancer is on the rise on the United States and most of the increase is due to PTC, although the authors write that it is debatable whether the increase is caused by an enhanced risk of cancer or an increase in detection. Obesity is recognized as a risk factor for a variety of cancers, the authors provide as study background.
"Our study shows that those patients with increasing BMI have a progressively increasing risk in presenting with late-stage PTC. This finding is especially seen in the obese and morbidly obese populations," the researchers comment.
Avital Harari, M.D., and colleagues at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, Los Angeles, reviewed the medical records of all patients older than 18 who underwent total thyroidectomy (removal of most or all of the thyroid gland) as an initial procedure for PTC or its variants from January 2004 through March 2011.
The final analysis included 443 patients with an average age of 48.2 years. Patients were divided into four BMI (body mass index) groups: normal (18.5-24.9), overweight (25-29.9), obese (30-39.9) and morbidly obese (=40).
"Greater BMI was associated with more advanced disease stage at presentation. Specifically, the obese and morbidly obese categories presented more as stage III or IV disease," according to the study results.
Researchers also note the obese and morbidly obese groups also presented with a higher prevalence of PTC tall cell variant, "suggesting that these groups have a higher risk of more aggressive tumor types."
"Given our findings, we believe that obese patients are at a higher risk of developing aggressive thyroid cancers and thus should be screened for thyroid cancer by sonography, which has been shown to be more sensitive in detecting thyroid cancer than physical examination alone," the authors conclude.
In an invited critique, Quan-Yang Duh, M.D., of the University of California, San Francisco, writes: "Harari and colleagues from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) showed us one more reason to be concerned about the current obesity epidemic - obese patients have more advanced thyroid cancer."
Duh continues: "This parallel increase in the rates of obesity and thyroid cancer is intriguing, but without a much larger population study, we cannot determine whether obesity causes thyroid cancer. However, the authors found that higher body mass index is associated with a later stage of thyroid cancer."
"For obese patients with papillary thyroid cancer, the bad news is that the cancer is likely to be more advanced. The good news is that thyroid operation remains safe even in obese patients with advanced disease," Duh concludes. thyroidcancer.livejournal.com/767.html

I had an operation in August of last year to remove my thyroid (due to having Graves disease). It was very painful after the op and still is painful now but not as bad. At the time of recovery, I thought that I wouldn't want to wear necklaces again, as they'd hurt me too much.
In Sept I was out shopping and stubbled upon this gorgeous necklace and as it was reduced to such a bargain price I couldn't let it slip away and suddenly that thought of no longer wearing necklaces was gone!
I couldn't wear it immediately, so had to wait a little while longer before I got the chance and when I did I got lots of lovely comments about it. I'm so pleased I bought it now and it looks fab with my little black (dress up/down) dress.

My thyroid numbers look good, but I'm taking replacement thyroid hormone so my numbers are better but not my thyroid.
When wearing braces, may I participate in sports?
If you have detachable braces, it's advisable to take them off and place them in the braces case instead of leaving them on your body. It is possible to purchase these through your dentist or from most big drugstores. If you do decide to remove your braces, it's crucial that you wear a mouthguard and then put them back on as soon as you possibly can thereafter.
Even when swimming, it's best to remove your braces. Wear a mouthguard designed for use over braces if you have fixed braces during body-contact sports. If you need a mouthguard, your dental team can make one.
The answer to this question is yes, you can play an instrument with braces on.
Braces can interfere with blowing instrument playing, but with practice, you'll get used to it. Detachable braces should be removed and placed in a braces case. It's a good idea to put it on after playing.
How do I eat when I have braces on?
You can damage or even shatter your braces by eating the wrong foods. If you're going to eat soft meals at the beginning, it's best to do so.
Braces or not, avoid foods that are heavy in sugar, involve a lot of chewing, and are high in gluten if you wear them. As gum can cause your braces to stay together, it is not recommended that you chew gum. Foods such as apples, carrots,
Crusty toast and crusty rolls should be avoided. These foods can damage the wires and frames in your braces, causing them to fall out.
Cut your meals into small bits and eat a bland diet at first. Between your teeth, food can accumulate in the brackets, which will require meticulous cleaning in order to be removed from the brackets.
Carbonated drinks, sparkling beverages, and natural fruit juices should be avoided because they often contain significant amounts of sugar and are acidic in nature. Tooth decay and caries can result from this. In addition, sparkling liquids can stain your orthodontics brackets.
Instead of sipping these drinks, use a drinking tube. Only water and simple milk can be consumed safely.
I'm wearing braces, so why do I need to take care of my mouth?
As with every other aspect of life, cleaning your teeth and braces requires dedication. There are a number of issues that can be avoided by following this advice.
When you lose calcium from your teeth' surface, decalcification happens, which might result in white patches on your teeth after braces are taken off. The dentist should also perform a general dental examination while you are wearing dentures. As a result, you'll have healthy teeth and a healthy mouth.
After losing or causing damage to my braces, what should I do next?
Immediately notify your dentist if you misplace or break an orthodontic appliance. Please don't wait for your next meeting. If you don't wear your braces or if they aren't in good condition, it can impede your healing and cause your teeth to revert to their previous level of alignment. To replace braces that have been misplaced or destroyed, dentists may request payment.
My mouth and braces are dirty. What should I do?
Every time you eat, brush your teeth and floss your braces. After a meal, it's best to wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth. Attend to each tooth and its surrounding gingiva.
What products can I use with braces?
There are various active chemicals, including fluoride and tartar control agents, in total care toothpaste that make it a highly effective toothpaste that has multiple functions. Plaque, teeth decay, and gum disease can be controlled with their help, and they also freshen up your breath.
When using an electric toothbrush, make sure that you clean all of your teeth thoroughly. Find out from your dentist whether there are any specially designed tiny brushes that can be used to maintain a clean mouth while wearing braces
Fixed braces can be cleaned with interdental brushes. Because they can get in between your teeth, they're best used to clean around the brackets of fixed braces, where they're most effective. These can be obtained through your dentist or pharmacy if you have one.
Cleaning stuck-on food with a dental thread will help keep the dental thread under your dentition.
These tablets contain a pigment that gives the plaque a bluish hue, yet it is completely safe to take. Brushing becomes much easier when you can see where plaque is. As a result, you will be able to brush your teeth effectively. Your dentist, pharmacist, or supermarket can provide this.
To prevent tooth decay and decalcification, use fluoride mouthwashes on a regular basis Be sure to follow the directions provided by the staff at your dental office or by your dentist before using these products.

From urinary tract infection to urinary incontinence without treatment can eventually lead to death. Therefore, if such signs appear, it is recommended to contact an emergency vet.
2. Loss of appetite or cessation of eating - Loss of appetite in our dog can be due to many different reasons and in the way it is among the first signs that appear in the condition of illness.
Loss of appetite and lack of eating per se (if they last longer than 24 hours) may affect and affect the health of the dog regardless of the cause of the initial cause. In such a situation it is recommended to diagnose the cause and treat it quickly in order to shorten the time when the dog is not eating while providing the dog with supportive care.

I'm about halfway through a three-month trial of thyroid medication to see if it helps me feel better. I was getting stressed trying to remember if I'd taken each day's pill, so now I have this box to help me keep track.
