Gewitter letzte Nacht 2-3 Uhr Thunderstorm last night

Thunderstorm in central Cochise County on 21 August, 2011. Taken from State Route 80 near Tombstone, Arizona. Alot of shots from this storm. Enough to spread throughout the winter months.

I love watching thunderstorms on Earth. But seeing them at night from space was just unreal. They are among the most eerie – and fascinating – phenomena we saw from up there.

An hour before sunset, a single storm cell moved just east of my location. You can see the turbulence in the chaotic cloud structure. Winds gusting >40 mph as storm moved through.

Looking nw to s (left to right).

Taken 30 minutes after sunset and moments after the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for this rotating thunderstorm just east of Chugwater, Wyoming (~40 miles to my north and at extreme right in this image). The core of this storm registered purple (extemely intense). Lightning was active and I did manage to capture some discrete bolts but smoke and falling precipitation limited the show for me.

A big multi-system thunderstorm roaming around south-eastern Bavaria on June, 5th 2016. The cloudformation ranged from Ingolstadt to Munich. Heavy rainfall, strong winds and a hailstorm (up 4cm) followed at the rear.

The towering office buildings of downtown New York City pale in comparison to the storm clouds gathering overhead. The sea and sky dominate the image and evoke feelings of awe in the sheer scale of forces of nature.

While I did get my camera soaked during this storm, I did get a few pretty cool shots out of it. This was taken from Liberty Island, which, despite the huge number of tourists that visit (many of whom carry expensive electronics), has surprisingly few places to hide from the weather.

I like clouds. I think I look up more than most people, just to see the formations, the changes, and the surprises that are up there. Here, a mirror image seemed more interesting than what was on the ground. If you are going to have a cloud photo, just make it about clouds. . .

Thanks for visiting. And please know that I read, appreciate, and find encouragement in your comments.

This thunderstorm (or is it Thunder Storm or Thunder-storm?) cloud was growing by the minute. Taking over the horizon.
