THESE bee-eaters have one of the most complex family-based social systems found in birds.
It nests in cliffs or banks of earth with others, known as "clams." Non-breeding individuals become helpers to relatives and assist in raising their brood. Just amazing to watch.

So, here is the next 10.5mm-fishyeye-installment; the saga continues...
It occurred to me the other day, that I've been a part of this Flickr community for a year now! And what a fantastic bunch of people you all are; true artists who never fail to inspire!
It's Bank Holiday weekend, here in the UK, and we plan on visiting family down south, for a few days. Whatever you're doing, have a good one!

Snow, hail, rain, sleet, slush, fog ... such was the weather of our trip. In five days I would guess we had about four hours of light ... so not alot of photos ... yet the trip was wonderful.
This is the first time I saw ANY of the Grand Canyon as we had 8 inches of snow while we were there and the fog filled up the canyon so that you could see nothing in it. The morning we left we FINALLY got a peak and a few shots.
This is at Mather Point just as the fog was flirting with the sun.
We are peering through the forest and can catch a glimpse of the bottom of the St Columba Falls. Perhaps I should add here: This is not an infra red. But it makes an interesting contrast and comparison to the infra red shots I showed you. Whereas the infra reds are about the light, black and white here emphasizes the dark rich contrasts, shades of grey and textures. It needs to be a large print.
[Once again this photograph simply has to be enlarged to pick up the nuances I've described - especially the fern fronds.]

BREEDING MALE, long tailed, vividly metallic green, with red an yellow patch on lower breast. Found in a wide range of habitats, normally in pairs, the female being very drab matt grey. A joy to see, move very fast, hard to keep in focus.

FOUND a better image, than shown before, from my Skomer Island visit, it was so good to be able to see these rare beauties, and to get fairly near one for a few seconds.

Break on Through and View Large on Black
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah
We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
But can you still recall
The time we cried
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Yeah!
Break on Through -- The Doors
I'm pleased with this one, because it was taken handheld and under pressure, as I was touring the house with my family who were getting increasingly impatient every time something caught my eye! So there was no time to linger. But the symmetry struck me, something that is echoed throughout the mansion at Tatton Park (Cheshire).
Thank you for all the views, faves and comments - I really appreciate it! It was quite a thrill to see my previous photo Explored!
HFF everyone!!!
The Autumn woodlands in motion - captured with a long exposure in the local park on a breezy afternoon (Nottingham, UK) (3580)
When I first arrived everything was in technicolour, however, once you go through the tunnel you go into black and white, I'm not kidding you. This picture is how you see it in SL, at first I thought my PC was broken but I look at my avatar and yep she's still in colour.
Come check it out for yourself, this image was taken @ Dreams Railroad by Fiona Fei.
Here we have another bird that has been eluding me for a while folks, but managed a few of this guy.
Early shoot today and will catch up later.
Thank you for stopping by everyone, and have a great day.
A pair of Southern Pacific SD45T-2s in full “Speed Lettering”, muscle a 68-car merchandise train through a tree lined curve east of Springville, Utah the afternoon of Oct. 27, 1996.
The smallest bird in the region, with its colourful crown stripe, always on the move, and difficult to locate at first, best found during winter months and nearly always favours conifers, have not had much luck in the past photographing them, so quite pleased with these.

Thanking you for your visit, any comments are greatly appropriated, Stay safe my dear friends, Tomx..
A bit of a happy accident in the low winter afternoon light as the GEs leading train 934 with a reasonable loading are about to cross the southern branch of the Waianakarua River as seen through a canopy of pines.
This train is often zero or few wagons - perhaps it only exists to catch any overflow from 920 and bring the crew up for 925.

LUCKY OPPORTUNITY to photograph one of these Slim and Savage predators, active by day and night, it relentlessly tracks down its prey by scent. It often kills prey more than twice its size, biting deeply into the neck.
Captured at Elmley Nature Reserve in Kent.
