Colorful thread holding together an expertly crafted paper-and-bamboo umbrella. In traditional Japanese gardening, umbrellas are used to protect fragile petals of flowers from fading from rain (or even to protect leaves from freezing frost). And of course, the umbrellas themselves become a part of the charm in the garden as a whole. In a peony garden of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura.
