Too busy for much commenting...hoping things slow down soon. Another choir competition tomorrow night in Walkerton...had to drive to fergus today for the opening of the new Threadworks Exhibition..... Which will tour in Ontario for the next three years...I will try to post some pics of it tomorrow.

Counted threadwork embroidery

For wing Wednesday.

I've been playing around with a few new ideas and lots of beads.

(Pattern by Angela Gambka)

Have a good one folks 😊

Just a nice piece of craft in threadwork on an old deacaying window shutter. Somebody attached it to it. Unfortunately it's damaged (which could be expected because it's along a public street) in Leeuwarden. It's a sailing ship called "Lemmer", after a Frisian village.

Frozen veggie samoosas I decided to try today since my mother bought herself a deep fryer, they were spicy and yummy, looking forward to making some from scratch though very soon :)

“Bread is the king of the table and all else is merely the court that surrounds the king. The countries are the soup, the meat, the vegetables, the salad but bread is king.”

By Woodhouse and Morley (Bradford), 1886, with additions in 1914. 5-storey mill, 18 x 16 bays with 6-storey tower. SW corner is rounded. Red brick with cream brick to window heads and bands. Ashlar base course, and dressings, including rusticated surrounds to 4 round-headed entrances. Segmentally headed windows to lower 4 floors, round headed to 5th floor. Cill courses to each floor. Cornice and high balustrade. 6th storey of tower similar to 5th floor.

Well originally for mill engines which was removed 1912. Lit by electricity from the beginning. Sits alongside the tumbling waters of the River Cart as a monument to Paisley’s rich history in the textile industry and the Paisley Pattern.

Shortly after this domestic finishing mill was opened, Clark and Co Ltd would amalgamate with J. & P. Coats to form J. & P. Coats Ltd, making this the largest thread manufacturer in the world, employing thousands in the Paisley area and exporting to millions of people across the globe.

It currently operates as Anchor One, a part of Abbey Mill Business Centre.

I am a threadpainter - and as I cannot blend primaries like paint, I do need many, many colours. There are about 750 here; these are only the regular weight threads. (I have 12 weights, silk ribbon, embroidery flosses, and buckets of yarn.) Half of my threads are greens-yellows. I tend not to stitch into sky or water in my work, so there's not a lot of blues. Most of my threadwork is the 'land'scape, stitched by free machine and freestyle hand embroidery. I'm moving into a bigger studio, and my daughter is anxious to have my old space for herself. It was her idea to sort my threads as a moving day project. : ) www.mysweetprairie.ca

This photo turned out better than I expected!

Some detail shots...beginning with this work by Sharron Begg...( you see her below, receiving an award for her beautiful work ) "Georgian Bay Pine". In my opinion, Sharron is the best in Canada with her free motion stitching. She is also a Flickr contact.... ( flickr.com/photos/Threadpainter )...and a fellow member of the fibreart group Connections.

This exhibition will be traveling the province...with it showing at our county museum in Southampton Ontario ( June 27-Aug. 8/10 )...at that time, I'll add more pictures to this series.

Varanasi has the finest religious river frontage in India, with miles of ghats (steps) for bathing; shrines, temples, and palaces rise tier on tier from the bank. Over a million pilgrims visit each year; many hope to die there in old age. A center of learning through the ages, it now has three universities, including the large Banaras Hindu University (estd. 1915), and over a dozen colleges. Besides being a centre of arts, crafts, music and dance, it is still famous for its production of silks (and brocades with gold and silver threadwork), as well as for wooden toys, bangles made of glass, ivory work, and brassware. ♣

My most memorable experience in Varanasi was visiting the burning ghats. The bigger of the two is Manikarnika, the other is Harishchandra. The former hosts up to 200 cremations each day. The process is efficient and businesslike. Above the ghats are huge stacks of wood; the family of the deceased, according to their means, buys one of many funeral packages on offer, including a certain quantity of wood, sandalwood sawdust, ghee, other ritualistic paraphernalia, and a priest's services.

Orderlies set up the pyre, the body is placed on it, the priest chants and performs the rituals, ghee is poured on, and the pyre is set alight, as the men of the family watch (women stay at home). If the fire doesn't catch on well, more ghee and sawdust are added. If a family can't afford enough wood, as is not uncommon, the body is burned in stages: middle part first, while the head and legs stick out, to be pushed in deftly by a pole after the middle part collapses.

A few hours later, the ashes and bits of bones are gathered by the eldest son or a senior male of the family and consigned to the waters, where "untouchables" stand with wire nettings to dredge up the ash and mud, hoping for a gold tooth or nose ring that may have survived the fire (pieces of jewelry may be left on the deceased by the family). Not all who die are cremated -- children under five, lepers, sadhus, pregnant women, and snake-bite victims are offered directly to the river.

My own design, size 30 thread. :)

I made this small quilt (12 x 12 inches) for an art quilt challenge on the theme of "illumination." It's an original design sewn with silk fabric, and the detail was added with threadwork and oil pastels. You can see the other challenge pieces on this theme at www.twelveby12.org/illumination/index.html

Ada Hand Embroidered Chikan Top brings out the cool calm attitude while giving you the relaxed feel.

HMQG friend's hand dyed cottons cut into Drunkard's Path and turned into a village. All sitting on Essex Linen. I think all it needs now is threadwork on the domes and in the background. What do you think? Yes, I know that I am obsessed with the DP's!!

When seen under magnification, plant stems sliced horizontally have a beautiful lace like pattern. The shapes are formed by the vessels that move water from the roots to the leaves, called xylem and pholem.

Nava Lubelski - "Tequila Sunrise", 2009, 12" x 12", thread on stained canvas.

From the Strich & Faden presentation by Kunstraum Richard Sorge at the 6th Berliner Kunstsalon art fair 2009.

Artist Statement:

My work is based on processes of stitching and staining. Stretched canvases are spattered with drips and splotches. These organic shapes become a pattern to be sewn over and around, the thread transforming modern art's "drip" into something new and unfamiliar. The juxtaposition of the random, fluid shapes, highly suggestive of speed and viscous movement, with the detailed and labor-intensive structure of the stitching, both liberates threadwork from its traditional dependence on functionality, decoration and order, and simultaneously feminizes these aggressive forms, which are normally associated with the most unapologetically macho of 20th century artists.

I consider these shapes to be, not abstractions, but rather actual representation of stains and spills as they appear in painting, in the home and in the urban landscape. The work is a process of mending. Stains are unredeemable, problematic or shameful and it has traditionally been a woman's job to attempt to eradicate them or otherwise discard the "ruined" item. My process of redeeming these stains through enhancing, decorating, elevating or rehabilitating is about understanding why we dismiss or embrace certain ideas, forms or media.

Almost all that's left of the Victorian Mills on Paisley Canal

Crochet is my favorite hobby with photography very close behind. The more complicated the pattern, the more I like it. I also crochet afghans, but enjoy the intricate threadwork in doilies the most. It just brakes my heart to see them thrown in a yardsale by someone who has no idea the love and commitment it takes to complete them.

Theme: Your Favorite Hobby

Here is my latest piece, free machine stitched and hand embroidered. Trees at Bergheim, Sold

This year's theme for this traveling exhibit is TREES...and interpretations of the subject could be literal....or NOT ! Work was accepted from across Canada....and after the first run in Fergus, the 60+ pieces will travel to other galleries and museums around the large province of Ontario.

Next stop will be in our museum here in Bruce County, in Southampton, beginning June 27...until August 7.

I will post a fair number of pictures of this show....some from the opening day a couple of weeks ago...and some from yesterday, when I saw it again with a group of friends from Bruce County. In most cases I should be able to name the works, and the artists, as there is a catalogue available. I am fortunate to have two pieces of work in this exhibit.

This first work is by Kiyomi Sakamoto, of Toronto...it is entitled Dead Ends.

Timeless, traditional fashion that is Trans seasonal and always in vogue like this Black Cotton Chikan Kurti with a contemporary twist by Ada Designer Chikan Studio.

A study in the properties of reflected light, this piece uses metallic stencilling and threadwork to evoke the softness of a moonlit night.

In the shadow-cloaked halls of the Witherhold Citadel, Velrath stands as the last scion of a cursed bloodline. His gaze, burning with the fury of ancient thirst, pierces through centuries of betrayal and silence. Cloaked in black velvet stitched with roses that never wither, and adorned in a waistcoat of blood-red and gold threadwork, he is both monarch and monster. The air bends around him with reverence and fear. Candlelight dances across the sharpened planes of his face, revealing the timeless beauty of undeath — regal, wrathful, and eternally watchful.
