part of the Threadworks "Garden Party" exhibition...which has been travelling Art Galleries and Museums in Ontario for three years...the last stop of the tour... 60 outstanding works chosen from the best needleworkers around....this one by Susan Strachan Johnson of Everton Ont....entitled First Garden Party" . This piece won the Best of Show ribbon.
The show runs until Nov26...worth the trip !

Made: 06-07-11.
one thing i love is the unicorn. i believe it is my power animal, and the fox is my companion. i saw this under hypnosis, and it has not left my conscious mind. the tapestries at stirling castle brought tears to my eyes. this is in the workshop where they make tapestries as they did so long ago. the threadwork is astounding. being a musician, i of course wondered what the worker listened to on the headphones, imagining what i would hear if doing such work.

Made in Italy between 1730 and 1750. Of silk and gold thread; laid and couched-work embroidery.
I finally managed to catch Issabbella wearing the coif in good light, and seated so I could photograph the beautiful drawn threadwork and openwork seam on the top.

I recently did an essay about blackwork embroidery and this was one of my accompanying samples. It was supposed of kind of show how the oxidation of the black dye rots away the threads. Something like that anyway.

Cotton shirt with tea-dyed cotton muslin collar, cuffs, placket, and yoke detail. Hand-drafted pattern. Hand embroidered with black and cream pearl cotton. "Pseudoblackwork" freehand embroidery, not counted threadwork. Handmade 16-gauge brass wire clasps.
The cotton chikan top done with intricate chikankari. Pair this piece with pants or jeans to complete the look and carry over this urban desi look to any of the casual get together.

It resembles the moon, or a sheet of blank paper
And appears to have suffered a sort of private blitzkrieg.

With no attachments, like a foetus in a bottle,
The obsolete house, the sea, flattened to a picture
She has one too many dimensions to enter.
