I sew at 2 different areas and was tired of chasing my pincushion around, so I made one to fit tightly into a sewing drawer that I keep sitting on top of the cabinet. Works GREAT! The little thing on top has sand in it, for my needles.
44" wide x 45" long
took 4,000 yards of size 10 thread
Started in Nov 2004 & "finished" 3/17/07 (but still needs edging and blocking as of Dec 2007)
The thread is Knit-Cro-Sheen, almond pink, size 10. Crocheted with a Boye size 6 hook.
The design is by Mary Werst, "Exceptional" from Extra-Special Doilies, Leisure Arts Booklet #3588.

In this picture, I use a knitting needle size US1 to make the loops at the beginning.
I started with scrap thread that was about 30 to 32 inches in length.
Making rings might be a good use for any the scrap you might have!
Bit of a in-the-sun shot, but the rising Belgrade Plaza Phase 3 development completely dominates the view, standing from the bottom of Radford Rd (Radford Radial as it used to be called - maybe it still is).
