Wales, Thomas the Tank Engine, Llangollen, North Wales.

Thomas the Tank came out to play at the kite festival. His friends Devious Deisel and the Troublesome Trucks were there too.

Shocking. Any fule kno that Thomas the Tank Engine has six wheels, not four. This clockwork Hornby trainset can be found at Bassetlaw Museum in Retford.

I am in the process of making a "Thomas Cake" so this toy came out of the cupboard as a guide... perfect for my blue bokeh shot!!

No.13 'Duck and the Diesel Engine'

This well loved series of Railway Books by Rev W Awdry belongs to my son. There are 26 'originals' and copious spin-offs, with the obligatory DVDs, games, train sets and toys - all of which probably passed through this household over the years.

The lovely thing is that I can remember reading them myself when I was little (my fave was Edward the Blue Engine!).

Original State: Rubber tire treads are missing.

Thomas comes to the Rescue the Illinois Railway Museum and saves the year! Even a miniature model of Thomas ran in a tent.

We took my little girl to Drayton Manor park today and laughed like hell when we saw what some staff joker had done to the models. This is the actual set (behind glass) from the filming of 'Thomas the tank engine and friends'. Didn't see this on the telly!

Mid Hants Railway, Watercress Line, Ropley

Old photo I took at Crich Tramway Village ( www.tramway.co.uk ) of 'Thomas The Tank Engine' on the depot fan. This is the only photo I can find that I took at the event, but as I was working as a volunteer during the event, I guess I didn't have time to take any others.

I believe this was taken on the 27th July 2003 during the Day Out With Thomas event that occurred only a couple of years, but I can't be 100% sure of the date now. It may have been a different year. Certainly on this date I noted that I got roped in to helping with a scenario with Thomas.

There were a number of scenarios involving Thomas and some of the trams that were running at the museum during the day and I've managed to find a leaflet listing these for the event that occurred on 17th July 2004. These are listed as follows;

11.00 'Thomas' is Discovered

The Lonely Engine

12.00 The Thirsty Engine

13.00 'Thomas' has Bellyache

14.00 'Thomas' and the Naughty Tram

15.00 The Thirsty Engine

16.00 'Thomas' has Bellyache

I remember I was roped in to helping with the Thirsty Engine scenario in 2003. I was volunteering in the workshop at the time, so had overalls on and they wanted some people in overalls to help out. Me and one of the other workshop staff had to carry out a bamboo pole that had loads of small buckets on. We then had to fill each bucket up using a hose attached to the water tanks on Sheffield 330 (which is a works tram that was used for rail cleaning and has two large water tanks inside). Then, once filled, each bucket was handed to a child (any member of public that wanted to get involved) who carried this over to a member of staff beside Thomas. The buckets were then emptied into Thomas' tank and sent back to us for more water and so on until Thomas' tank was full.

All of the trams that were running during Day Out With Thomas had 2D magnetic faces attached and were given names. In the above photo with Thomas is 'George', better know as Blackpool and Fleetwood Rack 2. Sheffield 330 had also been named for the occasion, but I can't remember what name that was given. Southampton 45 was named 'Shirley' as there is a place in Southampton with that name and the destination blind on the tram was thus able to display her name. I can't remember what other trams were named for the event, but I do remember one year, Sheffield Roberts car 510 was going to have a face, but with the front paneling of the tram being made from aluminium, the magnetic face wouldn't stick and there wasn't any other way of attaching it. I also remember a visiting bus similar in style to Bertie but in a different colour scheme being there with a face attached.

I have so far been unable to find any other info about this event at Crich online anywhere, so if anyone who sees this remembers it and has photos or anything, I would love to hear about it from you.

Thomas the Tank Engine Window by Mr Alfred Fisher

Today Caz took us tupperware hunting again. We were looking for a little cache but it was a big surprise to find this lovely Thomas engine hiding the log! Isn’t it cool? Leo and me thought it was great. More info. Ref: D1200-01

Diesel in the sidings . I think they classify this as Mavis.

British Railway 04 0-6-0 Diesel locomotive. This is the first moc that I’ve physically built. It needs a couple more revisions, I think. Nonetheless, I feel like I captured it’s likeness pretty well.

On tour on the Catskill Mountain Railroad.

This was my attempt at replicating a Pink Cake Box design as requested by Birthday Boy's Mom :) Bottom tier was chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream filling, top tier was vanilla buttermilk cake with vanilla buttercream filling, both covered with fondant. Thomas, the other trains and all details were made by me using fondant or a fondant/gum paste mixture.

Entering A Day Out With Thomas. We surprised my son. He had no idea where we were going. :)

Thomas the Tank Engine Birthday Party

Chugging his way into the hearts of kids around the country, Thomas the Tank Engine has been the roving Ambassador from the Island of Sodor for a couple of generations now. This live-steam version of Thomas, at the Strasburg Rail Road may well be the first actual steam engine that many kids today have ever seen in action. If just half a percent of the kids who see him take an interest in steam preservation, then using an otherwise historic artifact like Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal #15 in this way will have been well worth the cost.

Interestingly, the face on the Strasburg Rail Road's Thomas engine has morphed over the years. When this image was captured back in 2004, the eyes were capable of moving, which gave him the appearance of being "alive." While I have not seen it yet, I am told that this face has, in recent years, been replaced with a newly developed animatronic face, which has the ability to move not only the eyes, but also the mouth, and which can speak using computer-generated audio. Today, when kids attend a "Day out with Thomas" event, the blue engine will seem more alive than ever.

I made this for a friend of my sisters little boy. She was only having a small party so just wanted a cake for 10 people but he is mad on Thomas.

Obviously a fully sculpted model would have been way too pricy and excessive for her needs so we went for the other option of just the face.

Carved from a 7" round chocolate cake and then covered in sugarpaste.

He is real after all...

As part of Finn's birthday celebrations, we went out west of Auckland to the Glenbrook Vintage Railway on Saturday for their twice annual Friends Of Thomas festival.

Megan really only stumbled across it two weeks ago and everyone was very sceptical about the quality of the trains. To be honest we were expecting them to have paint an engine blue and stuck a cardboard face on the front of an existing engine.

However, their Thomas was absolutely brilliant and looked like the real thing. Meg, Nana and Granddad took Finny for a ride in him whilst David marvelled from the side of the tracks at how much work these dedicated amateurs do to put on such a great event. Not sure how the licensing works over here but the whole thing cost nothing if you just wanted to walk around and look at the trains. The kids all loved it.

Bravo. A credit to New Zealand.
