The gate is Jacobean, and -- so my B&B hostess informs me -- is missing two very large stone top pieces from either side of the crest work. They were stolen in the middle of a rainy night last spring.

Glass. When I was a child, I went to beach every summer with my family. I liked to pick up pieces of glass on beach. I collected many of them in Brighton and by the Thames, just as the mudlarks did.
You’re not early. You’re not late.
Life is not a competition, it’s a journey. Trying to live it as a sprint instead of as a marathon can’t do anything but drain your energy. Sprinters too, they train for years to preparare only few races, they spend hours to run seconds. Likewise, some may be built for frenetic paces, yet they don’t force themselves through the extreme just because they see others do better.
Whether you’re one of those people or you are a slower-paced one, you can’t live up to standards that are not for you by nature.
The main goal is living the process, enjoying the experience it gives you and eventually soaking up its reward.
What you really want will stay there waiting for you even if someone gets there before you do. Same as for those who were behind you. Persistence and constancy are of an infinite availability: they get you through the journey and to the destination if you feed them with patience.
Time itself is a concept humans made up. Feeling it is inevitable, but letting it overwhelm you is gonna lead you nowhere in life.
Don’t rush, but don’t delay. You have your own hourglass in your hands, make sure to use it properly.
Things take time.
