Looking east through the main foyer on the fifth floor (old Andrew Mellon apartment) floor of the McCormick Apartments at 1785 Massachusetts Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The structure is also known as the Andrew Mellon Building, for one of its most famous tenants. The flooring and moldings are all original to the building. The view is into the old east foyer and the door beyond shows what was the old Butler's Pantry. In the hall, to the door to the right leads to the dining room. To the left is a door and access to the main stairs and elevator.
The structure was built by Stanley McCormick, heir to the International Harvester fortune. McCormick was mentally ill, however, and the building was largely built to the specifications of his wife, Katherine Dexter McCormick. The apartments were designed by Jules Henri de Sibour in the Beaux-Arts style common to the Dupont Circle neighborhood. Construction began in 1915 and was complete in 1917.
The building was designed to accommodate the very wealthy, as were most of the mansions and apartment buildings in the Dupont Circle neighborhood and north along Massachusetts Avenue NW. The plot of land was trapezoidal, posing some challenges to the typical symmetrical, boxy mansion design. De Sibor designed the entrance (on the northwest corner of 18th Street and Massachusetts Avenue) to pentrate the building in a northeasterly direction. Here, a circular tower formed the corner of the building and created a circular receiving area where visitors could shake off water-logged coats, remove galoshes, and alert the concierge as to whom they were visiting. Three short steps led into a small, square foyer where the concierge had a desk. From here, one could take the elevator up or take the winding staircase to the upper floors.
Because of the reception and foyer areas on the ground floor, the first floor was divided into two smaller apartments. The apartment to the left of the lobby was nearly identical in arrangement to that of the units above, but the one to the right was radically different in order to add baths, kitchen, bedrooms, and servants' quarters.
Each of the upper floors occupied an entire floor. The core of the building contained the staircase and elevator. Around this was wrapped the servants hall, kitchen, and servants' quarters. On the exterior of the building was the family living space. The facade facing the alley that ran along the east side and southeast corner of the building was undecorated. A narrow, unfinished rectangular courtyard pierced the building here to provide light to the servants' quarters and servants' hall.
The huge living room and somewhat smaller dining room ran the length of the building along Massachusetts Avenue NW. Behind the dining room (along the southeast corner alley) was the kitchen, and further back was the servants' hall (which served as a servants' dining room). Three foyers -- right, left, and ahead -- bracketed the elevator and stairwell, providing plenty of buffer space to keep visitors out of the apartment until they were wanted.
Along quieter 18th Street was a salon, two small bedrooms (with a shared bath), and a large bedroom (which occupied the brightly lit corner). Three small bedrooms ran along P Street NW. There were three bathrooms here, each shared by the bedroom next to it. These essentially created a long corridor on the P Street wall through which family members or guests could visit one another in states of undress without using the hallway. A public corridor ran along the inner wall of these bedrooms.
The inner core of the building consisted of a mezzanine set below the floor. The servants' hall, kitchen, dining room, living room, salon, bedrooms, foyers, and public corridors all had 14.5 foot high ceilings. The servants quarters were remarkably smaller, each just 10 feet wide and 15 feet long with only enough room for a twin bed and an upright wardrobe. All five servants' rooms shared a single bath. Ceilings here were just eight feet. Interestingly, the top floor had TWO mezzanines -- the normal one below, as well as one above. This gave the top floor apartment space for as many as 10 live-in servants.
The building offered many amenities: A central boiler system that provided both heat in winter and circulated cool water through the radiators in summer (to help cool things off); a central vaccum system (plug the hose into the wall, and use); refrigerated tap water; and laundry chutes. Each apartment had its own washing machines and drying racks in the basement.
The building had numerous famous residents. They included Stanley McCormick and his daughter, Katherine McCormick Judge, who lived here from 1917 to 1930 and from 1930 to 1933. Robert Wood Bliss, a State Department official, lived here from 1920 to 1923. He moved out to become ambassador to Sweden, and upon his return to the U.S. purchased the Dumbarton Oaks estate in Georgetown. (It is now a national historic site and museum housing his extensive collection of pre-Columbian and Byzantine art.) William Butterworth, president of John Deere, lived here from 1930 to 1931 when he was president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Alanson B. Houghton, the former president of the Corning Glass Works, lived here from 1930 to 1934, as did Thomas Fortune Ryan (the onwer of the Belgian Congo diamond fields and an American robber-baron) from 1920 to 1922. Pearl Mesta, "the hostess with the mostest", lived here from 1931 to 1932. Her dinner parties and cocktail receptions were considered the most lavish and delightful of Washington society for half a century. Industrialist and banker Andrew Mellon also lived here from 1921 to 1932 while he served as Secretary of the Treasury to Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. Mellon occupied the top floor. Most tenants paid a whopping $15,000 a month to live there. (That's $275,000 in 2013 dollars!) Mellon paid $25,000 a month. For a few months in 1936, Lord Joseph Duveen rented the apartment below Mellon's and placed 42 valuable oil paintings there for Mellon to look at. Mellon, an avid art collector, was expanding his collection to form the nucleus of what he hoped would be a National Gallery of Art. Duveen hired a caretaker for the temporary gallery, and gave Mellon access (day or night). After some months, Mellon purchased nearly all of the paintings Duveen offered.
The Great Depression led to widespread vacancies in the building during the 1930s. It was largely empty by 1940. In 1941, the building was seized by the federal government and turned into offices. The British Purchasing Commission (which obtained ships, guns, and ammunition from the U.S. during the Lend-Lease period prior to WWII) used it from 1941 to 1942, followed by the British Air Commission in 1948 and the Commonwealth Scientific Office in 1949. It stood empty for two years. Stanley McCormick died in 1950, and under the terms of his will the building was donated to the American Council on Education. The council used it until 1969. It was sold to the Brookings Institution (which is next door) in January 1970. Brookings rented out to a wide range of scientific, educational, and lobbying organizations. It was sold to the National Trust for Historic Preservation on October 28, 1976 -- at which point it was declared a National Historic Landmark.
In late June 2013, the National Trust sold the building to the American Enterprise Institute (a right-wing think tank) for $36.5 million. The Trust moved into leased space on the top two floors of the Watergate Office Building. The National Trust holds a permanent historic preservation easement that protects both the interior and exterior of the Mellon Building.
1. I've had very few jobs that weren't related to food somehow. One of them was as a play therapist for autistic kids.
2. I've had several jobs as a driver including ice cream truck, cab and produce delivery driver. I still think about becoming a bus driver, ambulance driver and mailman. What can I say? I like driving!
3. I used to devour adventure travel books and believed that I would eventually race in the Iditarod or hike the Pacific Crest Trail or bike to the tip of South America. I did have one adventure and I hope there will be more.
4. I am friends with all my exes.
5. If I believed in reincarnation, I'd want to come back as an optimist.
6. I've never had a 9 to 5 job.
7. My favorite movie that doesn't include food is "All the Real Girls".
8. My favorite movie that does include food is a three way tie between "Tampopo", "Big Night" and "The Gleaners and I".
Whew! Half way done. This is harder than I thought.
9. I am a total voyeur. I have been known to read things I shouldn't. I loved reality tv as soon as it was 'invented'. Blogging seemed like a dream come true. And this is also a big reason why I am addicted to flickr. I love glimpses of other people's lives.
10. Even so, I find it hard to believe that people care about the stuff I put out here. I can't tell you how many long descriptions on pictures I've deleted before posting because I couldn't believe someone would want to read it.
11. I wish I'd appreciated being young and cute when I was young and cute.
(and don't tell me I'm still young and cute, PLEASE)
12. I love kids but I'm 98% glad that I'm not having any of my own.
13. I will never spend money to buy a tv. This seems pretty pointless now that you can do everything on your computer but still.
14. I am late fairly often and a terrible procrastinator but if there's one thing I am, it's reliable. If I say I am going to do something, I'll do it. Eventually.
15. I dream of living in the country but I am scared to leave the city (even if it's just a small city).
16. I have a terrible memory so I love holidays because they help me remember what I was doing on that day last year.
Happy New Year's Eve everybody!

A number of cameras in for repair at my local workshop
Take these broken things
And learn to see again, learn to shoot so free
When we hear the shutter ping
The memory card of stuff will open up and show what's in

i've been tagged a few times - but this one was fun (:
these are the things i love :D
we are outside october
My wife and I have been re-landscaping a large section of our yard and throughout the process we have found small discarded items. These old bottles, including an ink well, from the 1930's were buried near our foundation. In the past, we have found a couple of toys including a small pistol and a very small tour car, both from the 1920's.
Our home is a large Craftsman style residence built by a banker in 1918. He had a family, including small children. These old toys are evidence of this. Gone now is a small orchard that included a quince tree, three plum trees, a cherry tree and an apple tree. The trees were not healthy, given the age that they were and we have a nice fenced in area. Our yard has been a constant landscaping project. I like things to look somewhat in order.
Meanwhile----there is much more to do!
I got tagged by moxiee for the 16 things thingy and she managed to do it even though she was getting over the flu so I really have no excuse.
So here are the first 16 things off the top of my head.
1. I used to run barefoot. I got stopped by the police but that didn't put me off. No it was winter that ended my barefoot running career.
2. One leg is longer than the other, before you ask, by almost an inch. Maybe that's why I'm always falling over.
3. I get a cat cough in winter, but it's not as bad as it sounds.
4. As far as we can work out, my great grandfather was a Shakespearian actor.
5. I reinvent myself about once every ten years, so maybe the move to the countryside was just a new makeover.
6. I ate home made chocolate and apple pie up at Annapurna base camp. It was awesome. Altitude sickness, however, sucked.
7. I have never been to the US. I know. I need to fix that.
8. When I was 14 I had this talent that I never managed to capitalize on it. I could play Stairway to Heaven on the acoustic guitar. The boys loved it - however, my friends (who were the girlfriends) hated me for all the attention I got.
9. I went to a convent school and there was a time when I believed I had a vocation. I was eleven. Luckily, the knew what they were about and persuaded me that I would make a good something else. Anything else. Just not a nun.
10. I fractured my skull when I was 18 by tripping over the cat on the stairs and falling over the side of the rail all the way to the floor. I didn't make the party that evening, but I had the best excuse ever.
11. I got kicked out of the school play when I was 9. It was a musical and I had a leading role, but the music teacher kept changing the intro so I always missed my cue. I think he did it on purpose so he could give the part to someone prettier.
12. I have that kind of face. You know the one, where people always think they know you. The last time it happened was in Gap in Manchester - the cashier greeted me like his long lost sister and went bright red when he realised his mistake.
13. Once when I was working in a particularly rough part of Birmingham I was accosted by a group of men swigging meths and special brew. They were convinced I was "Michael Redgrave's daughter". I think they meant Vanessa.
14. Later that week I was in a pub the barman told everyone I looked like Vanessa Redgrave in Camelot. I had to borrow the video to find out whether I should be pleased or not.
15. I used to be a vegan. I didn't get a cat cough back then. I'm sure there's a connection but I really don't want to go there again.
16. If I could take a whole year off I'd pack my Blad and head off to India. I'd take Ron, too. Obv. I'm not sure which camera he'd bring.

Had to look this one up. The bus was a Volvo Ailsa B55-10 with Van Hool-Mac Ardle (who the hell were Mac Ardle?) bodywork, new to the South Yorkshire PTE in December 1976. It was quite a handsome vehicle, but somehow, with its foreign antecedents, it failed to beguile. It's not that I have anything against the Swedes or the Belgians, but the continental buses just then beginning to crowbar their way into the British market ...by our own default, of course... did not refer to any native tradition. They were not part of a process reaching back into the past and forward into the future. They had no story to tell. A process had been concluded, then started again from first principles. But they came to the industry with the rejuvenating effect of a monkey-gland transplant. At Badgerline we had some Volvo B10M-50s which knocked spots off our ponderous Leyland Olympians and five-gears-to-get-to-45mph Bristol VRTs.
The photograph was taken at Doncaster Bus Station late in the afternoon on Monday 9th October 1978. Note the Bristol FLF in the background ...one of the Bristol Omnibus Co. "city" fleet examples which replaced West Riding's troublesome Guy Wulfrunians before being passed to Lincolnshire Road Car Co. Would that be a Seddon Pennine bringing up the rear?

I was invited to spend two days at Europe’s most comprehensive IoT Event. This leading forum focused on case studies that show today’s Industry and Enterprises leveraging IoT technologies to transform their business through creating value and efficiencies.
The Internet of things (stylised Internet of Things or IoT) is the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as "connected devices" and "smart devices"), buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data.
"Things," in the IoT sense, can refer to a wide variety of devices such as heart monitoring implants, biochip transponders on farm animals, electric clams in coastal waters,[16] automobiles with built-in sensors, DNA analysis devices for environmental/food/pathogen monitoring or field operation devices that assist firefighters in search and rescue operations.[18] Legal scholars suggest to look at "Things" as an "inextricable mixture of hardware, software, data and service". These devices collect useful data with the help of various existing technologies and then autonomously flow the data between other devices. Current market examples include home automation (also known as smart home devices) such as the control and automation of lighting, heating (like smart thermostat), ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and appliances such as washer/dryers, robotic vacuums, air purifiers, ovens or refrigerators/freezers that use Wi-Fi for remote monitoring.

25 things about me, tagged by Lizz and Haley. I think I did one of these a few years ago on Flickr, so I hope I don’t repeat myself!
1. I own too many dolls. Really, far too many. But I can’t bear selling them. I do it at times out of absolute necessity, but I really, really hate it!
2. I like to run. I started it about a year and a half ago because I’d had a bad break-up six months previously and needed to focus my mind on something. It’s become a bit of an obsession – I ran a marathon this year, and I find that my mood can be almost wholly dependent on how well my running is going (I’m not always nice to be around when I’m injured!)
3. I’m obsessed with mirrors. I’m either avoiding them completely, or scanning my reflection repeatedly, depending on my mood. In restaurants I try not to sit opposite a window I can see myself in, as I get distracted by looking at my reflection, and it’s kind of embarrassing!
4. I’m really retarded with toothpaste tubes, the kind with the pump on. I break tube after tube, I can’t understand how I have a degree but can’t work a toothpaste tube.
5. I like to wear bright colours, I’m definitely not one of those people who lives in black. In fact, I mostly dislike black being close to my face, because I think it washes me out. The only colour I won’t wear is lilac (for the very same reason).
6. Although I wear bright colours on the outside, my taste in underwear is extremely dull and practical. I favour flesh-coloured T-shirt bras, and no-VPL knickers, much to the disappointment of many a boyfriend!
7. My pet hate in people is flakiness (in terms of personality, not dandruff – though I don’t like that much either). Sadly, flaky people seem to disguise themselves rather well, so I end up befriending them, only to realise further down the line that they’re completely useless.
8. I’m severely body dysmorphic and worry about whether or not I look fat every single day. It’s nauseating – things are nowhere near as bad as they were when I was in my early-20s, but I still wish it could be better.
9. I still watch Neighbours. I find it hilarious (in a ridiculous way) and I really, really want to go to Melbourne and go on the Neighbours trail. I would be sooo excited to meet the cast members!!
10. In addition to Neighbours, I still watch Home and Away. I also watch 90210, and latterly, One Tree Hill. Oh yes, I watch some very bad TV.
11. I want to kill the couple on the match.com ad, who “like old movies, like The Godfather 3” (it’s on right now). They’re dreadful, and I hope they don’t breed.
12. I plan to train as a pilates instructor next year. I’ve become obsessed with the benefits of core strength, so I figure that I may as well teach it to others (rather than boring people about it in general conversation like I do now!)
13. When I move in with my boyfriend next year, the first thing I want to buy is a ragdoll kitten.
14. When I move in with my boyfriend next year, the first thing I will ACTUALLY have to buy will be lots of glass cabinets to house my dolls, so that said ragdoll kitten does not destroy them.
15. At the moment I work three days a week from home, and two in the office. I have a horrible habit of doing no work at all on a Monday (in fact, I’ve done just that today) which makes the rest of my week suck. I never learn!
16. Although I’m not mad about chocolate, I have become oddly addicted to chocolate-covered rice cakes. They are yummy!
17. I’m a bit OCD about certain things. If I’m watching the TV, the volume has to be on a number that is divisible by five. I eat crisps in fives too. My boyfriend finds it hilarious to put the volume on 14 and hide the remote, or feed me six crisps then run off with the bag.
18. I’m absolutely starving right now. All the running means that I have to eat really often, and that I get maaaad if I can’t eat when I need to!
19. I think that the two most overrated celebrities of the last fifteen years have been Cheryl Cole and Princess Diana.
20. I really like guinea pigs. I had them when I was small and they lit up my world, I squeal whenever I see a picture of guinea pigs because I think they are so lovely. I couldn’t own them again though, as they don’t live long and would break my heart after just a very few years.
21. I don’t Twitter, because some random girl in the US already has the ID “Blondiepops” and I stubbornly refuse to call myself anything else.
22. I hate religion. Hate it. It’s done so much harm in the world that the word pretty much leaves me cold.
23. The above pic is of me with my Grandma. She was fantastic, and had the best Scottish accent in the world. She passed away in 2008, and I miss her.
24. I am experiencing big love for vintage Christmas decorations this year.
25. Now that I have written this, I am off to de-box some new dolls, then go to a pilates class. Both of which are very “me” activities!
I hope that wasn’t too boring!

My absence from Flickr is mostly due to my new habit of making things, especially now that I am moving and Im making new things for my home.
I am also busy with Emma so I don't really have time to take macros during the day, especially since she is walking about like crazy and would probably just trip over my tripod and camera etc. I will have to wait for a while before I start with those photos again. Meanwhile I will upload what I've been making lately. I feel a little bit sad to be disconnected from Flickr for so long!
If you'd like me to remove your image, please let me know. I didn't have the time in advance to get permission of use.

As a Public Service and a personal means of making mischief, I'm presenting to you a range of products which will undoubtedly enhance your enjoyment of life, make you healthier, more attractive and possibly bring you a little good luck. As you may have heretofore been unaware of these necessities, I've kindly left the web site addresses of the advertisers plainly visible so that you may, if you so choose, purchase them from their esteemed vendors.
These items were carefully culled from "The Emporium" pages of The Atlantic, a notoriously leftist rag which I study studiously each month. And now, I present the crème de la crème of the lot.
Let's begin with a light dinner: You may be tempted by this, but I have multiple objections, one being sudden death by Anaphylactic shock. My allergy to shellfish toxin would do me in withing the hour. I have another nagging fear here. Is this stuff delivered to your door packed in dry ice? Contact the company for more information. Suggest to them that they send me a commission cheque.
I find this one particularly amusing, since my exhaustive research has uncovered no convincing evidence that human pheromones even exist, let alone that they provide any useful advantages in the love game: I have two further comments on Dr. Cutler's magic potion. The first is, if you used this product, would you be willing to admit it? Could it go something like this:
MAN: Honey, I have something I need to tell you. I've been using human pheromones to attract you to me.
WOMAN: Well, that explains a lot, you [EXPLETIVE DELETED] !
I direct my second comment to Lee of WA. Lee, I am very sad for you. You have my deepest condolences.
Okay, okay, I have to admit that this one looks like fun: However, my dignity suffers sufficiently from the big stogie sticking out of my mouth. Hey, remember, Freud said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."
For the waistline challenged I present: Is it just me or does that thing look dangerous. Would you let your children play with it? Of course this begs the question whether you are ignorant enough to believe that four minutes of exercise a day is going to do anything but give you a sudden violent heart attack the next time you try to tango with your sweetie. Seriously, folks. I'm going to make a million with MadDog's Foolproof Weight Loss Diet at US100 a pop. It will consist of a postcard delivered to the client's house with one sentence written on the back. - "Stop stuffing food into your gob all day!"
You know, I'd actually buy this (bit of a hat fetish here) if I actually believed that I could roll it up and it would look okay after I unroll it:
But, US$75 bucks? Hey, I didn't come in on a load of pumpkins! It's made in Ecuador, for pity's sake. Those people get paid in bananas. No way I'm going to enrich the capitalist exploiters of the sweaty masses. On the other hand, if you want to send me one for testing purposes . . .
Well, this indeed is the perfect holiday gift. Too bad the holidays are over: HELLO! . . . anybody out there ever hear of a supermarket?
Hey, something just popped into the little round space in my head that I use for a mind. What if the people who buy this stuff are simply lonely? Isn't that sad? Maybe the UPS guy is their only contact with normal humans. We could be dealing with some very disconcerting stuff here. Somebody should write a chick-flick screen play. Hey, maybe I will. Any producers out there sniffing around for a hot property?
I'm actually grateful for the enlightenment by which I was enlightened by the simple reading of this ad: I had no idea that the US Library of Congress had thiry official, registered, supremely pompous, gloriously elegant and powerful yet dignified Eagle designs just sitting there waiting for somebody to come along and commercialise. Wonders do exist! Who knows what other wonders lie neglected on dusty shelves which can be converted into ready cash. And, it so patriotic! Still, I'll pass.
You know, I've been thinking green a lot lately. I've discovered that being poor is a marvelous way of reducing my carbon footprint. I'm seriously considering becoming destitute. Maybe my footprint will become so small that I'll simply float up into the air and live in the clouds. And, today I discovered another essential device to hasten the day when I'll be flat broke and wondering how all my precious moolah went up in smoke:
I particularly appreciate the "self extinguishing brass base". Until now, I laboured under the delusion that brass doesn't burn, except, of course, under the most intense heat - and I'm not sure about that. Furthermore this device is very chummy with the environment, having raped only the bees for their abodes, won't poison me or give me cancer and, thank you so much, doesn't drip. Man I hate those candle drips! It takes hours to pick them all off and feed them back into the little puddle of molten paraffin.
Manufacturers of the world, we implore you. Please, in the name of Mercy, give us more useless crap!
Nice little things in this sort of weather. Not the quietest things though;these were all 1930's vehicles and were fitted with Matchless or British
Anzani motorcycle engines.
There were five in total.
This is one of the quirkier things to ever have operated on the main line!
A special hauled by 46229 'Duchess of Hamilton' from Liverpool to Manchester stopped at Eccles to allow invited guests to travel on replica Liverpool and Manchester Railway open coaches behind the replica of 'Lion' to the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry at Castlefield. Sadly in today's environment this simpy wouldn't be countenanced due to health and safety requirements and the need to fit OTMR etc, blah, blah....
Fortunately things were a lot more relaxed in the joined up railway in 1980, extending even to the mass trespass by locals on the Weaste branch in the background despite the presence of police in the foreground.
I bet the brass band playing in the lead coach were very glad that the default Mancunian weather (sic) was not evident!
Incidentally all is not as it seems in this image as a class 08 shunter was providing assistance on the rear!
