Water Thick-knee (Burhinus vermiculatus), Chobe National Park, Botswana, March 2023.
The species is found across sub-Saharan Africa, usually close to water. Across its range it is found on the edges of lakes, estuaries and rivers, as well as mangroves and also some sheltered beaches. It also needs bushes or nearby woodlands for shelter. The water thick-knee is a terrestrial feeder that forages at night. Although it is typically associated with water it can be found foraging up to 1 km from water. It feeds on insects, crustaceans and mollusks. The water thick-knee generally breeds in the dry season or early rainy season. It is a monogamous breeder with both parents guarding the nest and brooding the eggs.

I saw a 1cm-long black fly land on a leaf and thought "That won't male much of a photo". Then I remembered that you can discover all sorts of wonderful colours you can't see with the naked eye when you look through a macro lens. Wow, it's not "just" a black fly! I've no idea what species it is but I definitely didn't see all those colours through my own eyes. Cropped from 3:2 ratio to 4:3 maintaining the height of the original photo. Taken using the pop-up flash - a rare event for me - set to 1/32 power, with diffuser, on account of the thick overhead cloud.
STOP PRESS: I've just ID-d this as an Orange-bearded bluebottle; what a name!

A thick marine layer of fog hangs low over the tidal flats of the south Puget Sound. A clingy, sticky feeling fog, refusing to allow the sun its day to shine over the forest and tide lands. But even so, the Sun will not be denied its right and still finds its way to cut through in a show of light worth recording.

Please view on black, large.
Here, on the right banks the colour is still mostly green ever so slightly turning yellow, also Autumn!
It is serenely quiet across the water, and nothing is rippling the surface, so the reflections are smooth.
It starts to rain more, but it passes quickly, on the little beach we photograph from, there are trees which give us some protection.

A beautiful Thick-billed Kingbird showed up in the Bay Area yesterday!! I don't usually go chasing a bird these days but decided with the beautiful weather, we would have a go at it. So glad we did because not only was it a beautiful day and seeing some old friends for the first time since the pandemic, it has not been around today. I feel very lucky. Last time one showed up in the Bay Area was late 90's early 2000 in Half Moon Bay.
Only other time I saw one was in Arizona back in 2011 with a "for the record" shot. So happy we got to see it yesterday!
Thick air covered the Snake River 9/22/12. Fires were burning to the South and to the West. Just over the hills, fires blazed. It was hard to see the other side of the River..
