Merlin ID of three hard to call finches

It's around six in the afternoon on a mid December afternoon. A thick fog is descending. An Indiana Northeastern crew, with their two SD40-2's, have been at it since before dawn loading a grain train a handful of hoppers at a time. They're done for the day and have tied and shut down their power, though the lights haven't gone out quite yet.

A thick haze from the wildfires out west returned to Minnesota dulling the usually vibrant blue sky this time of year.

The sun was still shining as best as it could when a repainted Tri-Window SD60M led a short H-MINNTW1-18A out of Becker.

It's been three-and-a-half years since I last saw a 3-windowed SD60M, which were still green at the time.

1425 is only my second repainted SD60M leader I've shot thus far, and it looks pretty awesome.

1964 spent so time in Minot recently helping with grain service, so it was nice to see it again.

My buddy Todd was in person for once to capitalize with me, and naturally, clouds were mocking us like normal with shade as the train approaches.

There has been quite thick fog here for several days now: an opportunity to take B&W photos. Edited with NIK software

Wild South Africa

Kruger National Park

A dense fog as thick as soup enveloped the area before sunrise and it’s been a while since shooting sunrise so off I went to a location that's relatively close to home. Driving when visibility is less than a quarter mile is intense and the weather advisory wasn't kidding with the statement of dangerous driving conditions.

When the sun rose the fog was still dense and the only thing that changed was the right hand side of the scene was a tad brighter even though the sun could not be seen. But hey I was there and up for a challenge and managed to create a decent winter fog landscape scene imho.

Went to Blenheim for the sunrise only to find the mist/fog was rather to thick, a decision to change location to the other side of the bridge and I happen to notice this tree highlighted by the sun through the mist.

Finca Romelia Orchids and Birds, Colombia

The Butterfly Place in Westford opened for the season today, as they do every Valentine's Day. I've been looking forward to visiting, and made sure to stop by before school vacation brings big crowds next week.

We had been worried about Ares' girlfriend Cindy because we hadn't seen her for a while! How happy I was when I saw her yesterday on the meadow in our garden! She is doing well, her eyes are fine again and her thick winter fur is ideal for this time of year! Let's see if she treats herself to a tasty portion of cat food later!

I loaded up the kayak for the first time this year and headed down to the cape for sunrise, hoping to get onto some alcids in Provincetown Harbor. The weather conditions were absolutely perfect with mainly clear skies, very little wind and unseasonably warm temperatures, and this very accommodating bird made the round trip worthwhile.

Guess I was just lucky to find a bench on this day, with no chance of seeing ocean (to the side and front of the bench).

- Cape Spear, NFLD

Small finchlike bird, compact and short-tailed. Generally yellow below and dark blue-black above with stout bill. To identify male euphonias, focus on crown and throat: on Thick-billed, crown is entirely yellow and throat is yellow. Females are extremely difficult to separate from other euphonias, especially Yellow-crowned, but often seen in pairs or small groups with more distinctive males. Frequents open forested habitats, edges, and gardens. Can form mixed feeding flocks with other species such as warblers and tanagers.

This male was photographed in Northern Peru led by Neotropic Photo Tours and our Peruvian local guide for this portion of the trip; Fisher Chávez of Perú Nature Photography.

I do not know if this is supposed to symbolise something - I feel like it is, but then I do not know what it symbolises. Also, it is not as good as I wanted. But then, I was given, like, five minutes to do it.

Have a nice weekend everyone!
