Water Thick-knee

The water thick-knee (Burhinus vermiculatus), or water dikkop is a species of bird in the thick-knee family Burhinidae. The species is found across sub-Saharan Africa, usually close to water.

The water thick-knee is a terrestrial feeder that forages at night. Although it is typically associated with water it can be found foraging up to 1 km (0.62 mi) from water. It feeds on insects, crustaceans and molluscs

Bright yellow finch with a thick, powerful bill. Male is daffodil-yellow with a black mask, dark bill, and scaly speckling on the back. Female is duller yellow with light pink in the bill, weaker back patterning, and a much fainter head pattern. Baya Weaver is less extensively yellow, with the female having darker patterning on the back and wings than Asian Golden Weaver. Inhabits lowland wet farmland and natural wetlands where the male builds round grass nests in small colonies. Native to mainland Southeast Asia and Sumatra; introduced to Singapore.

Just as I was setting up the camera for this picture, a Purple Gallinule decided to take a stroll through the shot. I love the seemingly resigned expression on the Thick-Knee.

Leaves with thick cuticles are very noticeable because of their waxy coating. This type of coating helps prevent water loss. These leaves are found in areas that are dry and have a lack of rain.
