The most noticeable characteristics of the American red squirrel are the tail and the eye ring. The tree squirrel's tail is bushy and dark red with hints of a white outline. The eye ring is a thick, white circle around the rodent's black eyes. American red squirrels are about 12 inches and have grayish, red, or rust-colored fur with a white belly. Sometimes a black stripe can be seen on the sides.

The yellow-throated warbler (Setophaga dominica) is a small migratory songbird species breeding in temperate North America. It belongs to the New World warbler family (Parulidae). Yellow-throated Warblers are small, well-proportioned birds with sharp and pointed bills. Compared to other warblers, they are a bit more heavy-bodied with a longer and thicker bill. From below, note the blunt, only slightly notched tail. Yellow-throated Warblers are gray and white with a splash of yellow on the throat and black streaks down the sides. The yellow throat is offset by a black triangle below the eye and a white eyebrow. From above they have a gray back and 2 white wingbars. From below look for the white belly and white tail. Females and first-year males look similar, but are slightly paler.

The species Syritta pipiens is within the family of Syrphidae, commonly called hover or flower flies. Syrphidae is one of the largest families within the Diptera order[12] and contains about 6,000 known species widely distributed around the world. They are distinctive flies that are often found on flowers, where the adult males primarily feed on nectar and adult females eat protein-rich pollen to produce eggs
From All About Birds -

The Thick-billed Euphonia is found in Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest.

Upperparts are a dark blue-black except for the yellow crown patch which extends from the bill over the head to just past the eye.
You could hear the sea, like a continuous avalanche, the incessant thunder of a storm born of who knows what sky. It didn't stop for a moment. He knew no weariness. A. Baricco
Senegal Thick-knee - Queen Elizabeth National Park, Western, Uganda
Bird Species # (651) that I photographed and placed on my Flickr Photostream. Overall goal is 1000.
On this trip to Uganda we used Ngoni Safaris Uganda. They provided excellent service. I highly recommend them.

*Lifer* This rare find was off to the left of the Jetty at Barnegat Light. I (Barbara) will personally never forget this bird because it cost me a shoulder injury falling on the rocks while trying to find it.

A Thick-legged flower beetle ~ Oedemera nobilis on a Seaside Daisy ~ Erigeron glaucus.
I took this photo on the 6th, but didn't know what the theme was for today at the time. Since last Monday, I've hardly been out due to the horrible weather.
The photo hasn't been on Flickr before, although similar ones of it have.
Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites.

Thick-knees ( Burhinidae ) are also called Stone Curlews or Dikkops and are large waders/shorebirds ( the order Charadriiformes ).
They all have large eyes and long thickly jointed legs.
The Spotted Thick-knee is often active at night when its loud call can be heard from a distance.

A spotted thick-knee aka Cape thick-knee (Burhinus capensis) in an aviary at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona. This species is predominantly terrestrial and native to central and southern Africa.
This guy is behind some thick glass in low light at the zoo. So was happy how this one turned out with those obstacles. Zoo photography at times is very challenging with light and man made obstacles to deal with.
I hope everyone enjoys this image!

Formidable apex predators of the sky and winter migrants to South Asia. These are large birds of prey with a range much of Europe and Asia. Almost 70 cm in height and around 2-2.5 kgs in weight, this is a large eagle. Like every other large eagles, this too is a sluggish hunter that tries to conserve its energy while hunting.
Shot this in the Nilgiri's forest (on a 4 day trip) - a large Mega reserve of Tigers, Elephants, Bears, Leopards, Hyenas and other animals. Its a thick forest and one that has plenty of reports of human / animal conflict. Walking around for birds is a scary challenge. We shot this bird near a dumpyard where there were several species of Eagles - around 20-25 of them and another 10-20 Kites. The light was great and the setting beautiful. But our guide was nervous about straying far away from the vehicle since it is a tiger area and tigers are frequently sighted there.
There were about 8-10 of these GSE's perched on trees for a long time in the morning fog before we saw some action. And they continued to sit still after this brief action. As the day became too hot and light was harsh, we moved on.
