Entering this rest room at a local "Barnes and Nobles" store recently reminded me of the iconic scene in "The Shining" where Jack Torrance and Grady are talking as Mr.Grady is cleaning Jack's jacket and trousers of the Advocaat drink he spilled on Jack as he accidentally crashed into him in the Ballroom earlier...
I just LOVE that movie!!
This is the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. This is the hotel that inspired Stephen King to script the novel, "The Shining." Also it's the same hotel that was used to film some of the movie scenes from Dumb & Dumber. We landed on the Moon!
Also, the whiskey bar in this place is fantastic. That's the real reason to visit.
I wondered if my lone Lilith (Smoke and Mirrors whose twin, Trouble, I have never owned) might be a good twin to my new Eden (Not Pretending) who for now at least doesn't have a matching sister! I decided to dress them in matching dresses and once I did this they suddenly reminded me of the Grady twins in The Shining. So that meant I had to create a suitable diorama... Anyhow I think they look quite good together, what do you think?
The exteriors were used in The Shining. The majority of the film was shot on a recreated set in England, but the actual hotel can be seen in the opening helicopter sequence.
Nikon F65. An Ilford film, but I can't remember if it is Pan F Plus 50, Delta 100, or FP4 Plus 125. I know its an Ilford film because the only B&W films I used on this trip were Ilford.

This is a section of hand hooked carpet that is the same one as in the film The Shining. The carpet was in a small lobby of a Vancouver hotel as an art installation.
It was a very strange experience to stand on such a colorful, contrasty, and soft carpet, and then to know that it was the same as in creepy film! The pattern was kind of crazy making, actually, and at the well attended opening the focus was definitely towards the floor.

The Overlook
Sasha Krieger
October 13 – November 5, 2006
Opening reception: Friday, October 13th, 7pm
For her first solo exhibition, Sasha Krieger has reproduced a carpet from
Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining in Lobby Gallery at the Dominion
Hotel. The orange, red and brown design of the carpet is a potent visual
signifier of the horror and aesthetic of the cult classic, in which Jack
Nicholson's character descends into madness while attempting to write a
novel in the seclusion of the Overlook Hotel. By introducing a visual motif
from the film into the Dominion, Krieger explores the multiple and shifting
influences that create a sense of place. The installation addresses the role
of site-specificity, cultural memory and individual imagination on both the
artistic process and the act of viewing.
Krieger created the 400-square-foot carpet through the labour-intensive
process of rug-hooking. Seeking to emulate anxieties about production and
isolation central to The Shining, Krieger worked an average of 16 hours a
day for 19 weeks to complete the project. Over 40 people participated in the
making of the piece, transforming what would otherwise have been a
controlled and solitary effort into a process of openness and exchange.
Sasha Krieger graduated from Emily Carr Institute in 2005. She lives and
works in Vancouver.

I have wanted to make this since watching The Shining again last year and I finally remembered it!

Today's photo. Tomorrow (monday) is my last exam.
I've had enough of the studying.
This is a bit lame and cliche, but instead of taking my photo before the light went away,
I fell half asleep with my nephew (:

The Ahwahnee hotel in Yosemite. Stanley Kubrick modeled a lot of the interiors of the hotel in the Shining after the Ahwahnee.
The exteriors were used as The Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Nearly the entire film was a set recreated in England, but the actual hotel can be seen in the opening helicopter sequence.

Apart from Casablanca and Star Wars, I found this movie-related sim, The Kubrick Rooms. This corridor is the central part, with all the other movies in the 'hotel rooms' with red tags on the door handles. I sat on the little bike going "red rum, red rum" but my legs are too long for the pedals. In these shoes? I can't say I'm a big fan of Kubrick films, but I'll have a look around...

© All rights reserved. Do not use without written permission from photographer.
The Timberline Lodge served as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in Kubrick's movie, which is based on a novel by Stephen King. Unfortunately, the hedge maze in the movie doesn't exist. It's entirely fictional. The interior of the Overlook Hotel is fictional as well, shot on a London soundstage.
Timberline Lodge is on the south side of Mount Hood, about 60 miles (97 km) east of Portland. The National Historic Landmark sits at an elevation of 5,960 feet (1,817 m), where it is snowy and chilly enough for year-round skiing, the longest ski season in North America. Constructed from 1936 to 1938 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Timberline Lodge was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression, and dedicated September 28, 1937, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
