The Stanley Hotel served as the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's 1977 bestselling novel The Shining and as the filming location for the 1997 TV miniseries. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame and opened on July 4, 1909. (Estes Park, CO)

This was her idea, "let's do like The Shining", only originally it was both her and Tuffy, standing side by side. But after seeing that first shot, I realized it'd work better with just Tash by herself, which was, in my mind, awkward, like I was firing Tuffy from this particular shot.
It's a delicate thing, sometimes, when you're working with two models at once, you don't want to favor one over the other, you want them both to get your attention, yet there are some shots that favor one person over the other, and it's a bit like spinning plates, you've got to keep each one going, don't want any of them to lose momentum.
And so, for this shot, Tash's skin being almost translucent was perfect for this shot, whereas Tuffy's darker skin wouldn't have meshed with the pink background as well. But it was hard to articulate that at the time, so I just made sure I took some Tuffy Only shots soon afterwards.
Which turned out aces.
Oh, also, as you may or may not have noticed over the past year or so I've had this stream, I am utter shit at correctly framing my shots. Blame parallax, blame that old piece of shrapnel in my eye, acquired while saving my buddies in Vietnam, blame the shakes from not doing heroin in several minutes, but I am almost completely incapable of getting a shot perfectly symmetrical, try as I may. Hopefully, when my dirty meat hands are replaced with smooth pretty robot hands, this problem will be solved.
Robot fingers crossed.

Around here though it's simply known as Timberline Lodge.

Wanted to get a shot of this advertisement. I wanted to see it, but I had no time while I was in London, & when I got home, I wanted to see Terminator Dark Fate first because that came out first. Doctor Sleep was out of my cinema the day after I saw Terminator, so I missed out.
Stephen King likes to keep bashing Kubrick 40 years later, but is happy to accept royalty checks from that film & to have this adaptation of Dr. Sleep have connections with the Kubrick film & to make money from that.

Some street art from the SW 9th Street underpass on Cherry Street in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. It's reminiscent of an image from the Jack Nicholson movie "The Shining". Some urban artist did a pretty good job and the murals here change every year or so.

First and probably last attemp on the assignment TwPhCh #40: Hobby (might add another edit if I manage to do the edit better)
PLEASE TAKE ONE MINUTE TO FEEL THE FEAR: PICTURE ACCOMPANIED BY THE FILM-SEQUENCE
My most time-consuming hobby, beside photography, is film. This idea has been around for a while, but the moment hasn`t been there yet. "The shining" contain several important factors, that makes this one of the epic horror-movies; Stephen King, Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson.

"Something's changed in me, something deep within.
A power unexplainable, a force unknown to man.
It wasn't here amongst me, within me or around.
Not until I was attacked and found some hallowed ground.
What demon did possess me, who did God cast out?
When numbness did surround me and forced this evil out?"

I had planned on getting a bit more done tonight than just this, but what a pain in the arse this was to do.
I'd wanted to give it a go for a while. Maybe I should have left it a bit longer!!!

I swear one of these times I am going to return from a late night of photography at Disneyland to find a set of twins girls standing dead in the middle of a hall in the Grand Californian.

I wondered if my lone Lilith (Smoke and Mirrors whose twin, Trouble, I have never owned) might be a good twin to my new Eden (Not Pretending) who for now at least doesn't have a matching sister! I decided to dress them in matching dresses and once I did this they suddenly reminded me of the Grady twins in The Shining. So that meant I had to create a suitable diorama... Anyhow I think they look quite good together, what do you think?
The exteriors were used in The Shining. The majority of the film was shot on a recreated set in England, but the actual hotel can be seen in the opening helicopter sequence.
Nikon F65. An Ilford film, but I can't remember if it is Pan F Plus 50, Delta 100, or FP4 Plus 125. I know its an Ilford film because the only B&W films I used on this trip were Ilford.

This is a section of hand hooked carpet that is the same one as in the film The Shining. The carpet was in a small lobby of a Vancouver hotel as an art installation.
It was a very strange experience to stand on such a colorful, contrasty, and soft carpet, and then to know that it was the same as in creepy film! The pattern was kind of crazy making, actually, and at the well attended opening the focus was definitely towards the floor.

The Overlook
Sasha Krieger
October 13 – November 5, 2006
Opening reception: Friday, October 13th, 7pm
For her first solo exhibition, Sasha Krieger has reproduced a carpet from
Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining in Lobby Gallery at the Dominion
Hotel. The orange, red and brown design of the carpet is a potent visual
signifier of the horror and aesthetic of the cult classic, in which Jack
Nicholson's character descends into madness while attempting to write a
novel in the seclusion of the Overlook Hotel. By introducing a visual motif
from the film into the Dominion, Krieger explores the multiple and shifting
influences that create a sense of place. The installation addresses the role
of site-specificity, cultural memory and individual imagination on both the
artistic process and the act of viewing.
Krieger created the 400-square-foot carpet through the labour-intensive
process of rug-hooking. Seeking to emulate anxieties about production and
isolation central to The Shining, Krieger worked an average of 16 hours a
day for 19 weeks to complete the project. Over 40 people participated in the
making of the piece, transforming what would otherwise have been a
controlled and solitary effort into a process of openness and exchange.
Sasha Krieger graduated from Emily Carr Institute in 2005. She lives and
works in Vancouver.
