Full disclosure- it wasn't anywhere near 110°. It was more like 85° or so, fairly pleasant. We know that thermometer reads very, very high in the sun, so we have it located now where it gets sun only in the late afternoon.
I didn't need to look at this thermometer this morning to know that it is HOT. It's not often that the temperature reaches 97° F at 9:30 AM... but today it did! With humidity to go with it... ugh. It's a sauna out there right now!
PS - I laughed when I saw the sunflower that is trying to sprout in my window box... carefully planted there by a chipmunk. Every container planter I have outside has sunflower sprouts. He as been very busy storing up seeds for winter....
My husband was given this Galileo thermometer years ago as a holiday gift. It consists of a sealed glass tube filled with water and floating bubbles. The bubbles are filled with a colored liquid, and tags hand from each denoting a particular temperature. As the room temperature changes, so does the density of the water, causing some bubbles to float, while others sink. The bubble that sinks the most denotes the current approximate temperature. It's a pretty ingenious little invention, and a lot of fun to photograph too!
This candy thermometer worked perfectly for this project. My sugar syrup turned exactly the right consistancy.

Because a special climate needs a special thermometer
My outdoor thermometer compresses the actual temperatures around here into about 1/5 of the total range. Since temperatures really only vary about 30 degrees, who needs all those extra numbers in San Francisco?

Thermometer in Barcelona near the Plaça de Catalunya. It was about half past nine at the time I took this. It was getting dark and was noticably cooler than the rest of the day. It wasn't as hot in Barcelona as other parts of Spain, but it is a very humid city so it felt much hotter than it actually was.
