An old indoor thermometer. Lots of spots under the glass cover. That dictated where I focused my shot. ..where the spots would show least. .. and I still had to clean out some spots when I post processed the image.

Thought I'd take one last photo of my Galileo Thermometer. It's been packed away and I won't see it again until next year.

My great aunt used to have two of these. I really liked them when I was a kid. I still do! Their design is similar to the Honeywell oil furnace thermostats still used in many homes today. My uncle kept them and gave me the white one tonight. I didn't know somebody in the family had kept these when my great aunt passed away. Strangely, I thought about this thermometer that I haven't seen in since years earlier this week!

Our coldest morning so far, -35°F (-37°C)

Unedited images for our TPS challenge today

Our daughter in law bought me this thermometer for my birthday.

Its very nice and very accurate, Thought it might make a pleasant macro shot.

MacroMondays: Measurement.

A galileo thermometer is a thermometer in the form of a closed glass cylinder containing a transparent liquid hydrocarbon and various (often colored) glass bubbles. It is named after Galileo Galilei. With a change in temperature, the bubbles rise or fall. Each weight has its own characteristic temperature at which it begins to float in the liquid

The sealed glass spheres float or sink as their relative density changes with temperature. Each is 'tuned' to float at a certain temperature.

About all I've been seeing over the past 4 days! I can actually stand up without dizziness today!!! Maybe I'll make it to work tomorrow......

When Martin started on his chemotherapy journey, the lovely nurse explained how important it is to check his temperature daily as a raised temperature is often the first sign of infection. Great I thought, the old digital thermometer in our first aid box will finally get put to good use. How wrong I was lol. For some unknown reason Martin was unable to keep the damn thing under his tongue properly (I tested it on myself & it registered my temperature perfectly well). After 3 mins of me telling him to keep his tongue down & him denying he was doing it wrong, the readout only said 33C - he'd have been unconscious with hypothermia if that was correct. I did suggest another orifice the thermometer could be inserted into, but that news was not received very well at all 😂 So time for plan B.

A quick visit to my local pharmacy revealed a choice of just 1 infrared, non-contact thermometer. Simple to use & very accurate the helpful assistant assured me; it also has a memory function to store over 30 readings, batteries included & a handy storage box to keep it in. So despite balking slightly at the price (53 Euro) I bought it. A very wise decision as it takes all the stress out of the daily ritual. It also means we can zap the forehead of any visitors to the house. This was my temperature just now, I zapped my own forehead quickly & took the shot before the green light went off.

My heartfelt thanks again to everyone who has sent get well wishes & is keeping us in their thoughts & prayers. Martin is feeling quite unwell after his second chemo session on Tuesday. It was the same last time, 4 days after the treatment he felt awful but thankfully it wore off as the days passed & by the second & third weeks he was on good form.

Thermometer - an instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol which extends along the tube as it expands.

Vivitar Series 1 90-180 Flat Field Zoom test shot. I plan on using the lens mainly on my F2A. Had to try it out on digital first.

Although named after the 16th–17th-century physicist Galileo, the thermometer was not invented by him. (Galileo did invent a thermometer, called Galileo's air thermometer (more accurately termed a thermoscope), in or before 1603.)[1]

The instrument now known as a Galileo thermometer was invented by a group of academics and technicians known as the Accademia del Cimento of Florence,[2] who included Galileo's pupil, Torricelli and Torricelli's pupil Viviani.[3][4] Details of the thermometer were published in the Saggi di naturali esperienze fatte nell'Academia del Cimento sotto la protezione del Serenissimo Principe Leopoldo di Toscana e descritte dal segretario di essa Accademia (1666), the Academy's main publication. The English translation of this work (1684) describes the device ('The Fifth Thermometer') as 'slow and lazy', a description that is reflected in an alternative Italian name for the invention, the termometro lento (slow thermometer).[5] The outer vessel was filled with 'rectified spirits of wine' (a concentrated solution of ethanol in water); the weights of the glass bubbles were adjusted by grinding a small amount of glass from the sealed end; and a small air space was left at the top of the main vessel to allow 'for the Liquor to rarefie' [i.e. expand].

The device now called the Galileo thermometer was revived in the modern era by the Natural History Museum, London, which started selling a version in the 1990s

Our coldest morning so far this winter, but I expect tonight/tomorrow morning will beat this.

Late this afternoon, just a couple of minutes before 5 pm, and it is already -31°F (-35°C).

It 'warmed' to -26°F (-32°C) midday today.
