A photo I took from the airplane flying over Spain. Trying to catch textures from nature to give them shape of abstract and free interpretation.

Day 10. Today is the 10th of January, and it was a good day. I spent most of my morning just relaxing, and then I invited a friend over; we talked for a while, went out, walked and just had a good time. It has been a while since we talked frequently, so lately we’ve been spending more time together. It’s brought on a nice feeling of nostalgia, a somewhat bitter-sweet memory of times that are now long gone. At the same time, I’m glad to know that even though we’ve known each other for years and we are have changed so much, things are kind of… just the same. There’s just some people in your life, some very specific people that make you feel like time is an illusion. Friends, family, it doesn’t matter. The special quality they possess is a connection that dissolves time, that makes a year ago feel like just minutes, a feeling of trust and understanding that makes you just about certain that you can talk about anything.

It’s only right that we did today’s photo together. He loves abstract shapes and textures, so we made the photo using a Pine Cone that I had picked up in a forest in Envigado about a year ago. It’s quite amazing how getting so close to objects can distort them until they become completely unrecognisable, almost alien. My first thought when developed the photo was that it looked like a Triceratops; I’m not so sure about that any more, but I still like it.

Let’s see what tomorrow brings :)

This afternoon I suddenly found myself kneeling on the brown coconut matting in the bathroom, my head hidden in my dressing gown, which was slung over the broken cane chair. Kneeling doesn’t really come easily to me, I feel a sort of embarrassment. Why? Probably because of the critical, rational, atheistic bit that is part of me as well. And yet every so often I have a great urge to kneel down with my face in my hands and in this way to find some peace and to listen to that hidden source within me.

The velvety texture and the forking pattern of the branches, reminiscent of antlers, have led to the common name "stag's horn sumach". In both French and German, the common name of the species (Sumac vinaigrier, Essigbaum) means "vinegar tree". The Name sumac comes from the fact that its acidic fruit were added to vinegar to intensify its acidity.

It's natural area is located in the eastern United States and Canada. Rhus was brought to France about 1620 and 1621 is currently in a Parisian garden as "Sumac de Virginiana". From 1628 it can be demonstrated in Leiden, 1629 in London. In Germany, it can be detected in a first ducal Brunswick Garden, where he has come from 1630 to 1651, 1654 in Kaliningrad. But it was cultivated only rarely in botanic gardens or other by the end of the 18th century. Early 19th century, he was out in a German directory as ordinary pleasure bushes plant. For general distribution in parks and gardens he came only in the second half of the 20th century. The sumac is especially noticeable by its Autumn colours, the leaves are yellow, later orange, and in October a bright crimson

The fruits (drupes) of the genus Rhus are ground into a reddish-purple powder used as a spice in Middle Eastern cuisine to add a lemony taste to salads or meat.
