Taken for Our Daily Challenge (ODC): SEEN FROM ABOVE, the Topic for Sunday, 2 February 2014

This is the coolest thing--perhaps it's common elsewhere, but I've not seen one before. The silvery base at the upper right supports a stand on which a bicycle may be hung by its seat or top tube. The tools at the end of the cords are for repairing the bicycle. (Advice is available from a website).

This handsome and useful contraption is at the downtown end of the South Lake Union Streetcar. Hop off, tune up and ride away!

Final had a chance to process this on the plane on the way back from Berlin, and uploaded in heathrow via iPhone tether. Never done that before, and it seems to work pretty well. So the photo.... Had to do a fair amount to get it to this stage, so used photomatix and processed this as an HDR from a single raw file. Jinked around with sharpness and smoothing to get the best compromise and finally did a bit of the spli toning to get a distinction between blue parts and sunset parts. Overall I think this might be the pick of the bunch from Berlin, but still a few to process......

One of their mothers died and the hope is that the other mother will accept both lambs.

This morning was another "create your own foreground" contest. I happily scaled the rocks at the dead tree, then happily climbed out (maybe not quite happily, but I guess I didn't feel too bad about it, since you won't know until you try) onto the boardwalk to the beach area since the tide was wayyyy too high for anything photographic.

Reflections on the water...

Ok... AB800 strip light to camera right, ABR800 Ringlight mounted off camera center, AB800 with umbrella on camera left to light the background, AB800 mounted on a boom to light her hair from above. Phew!

Chair are tethered otherwise they will "disappear" into someone's garden somewhere.

Fishing boat on the beach at Dungeness at sunrise.

This is a part of the series of the diving fishermen gathering mussels off the coast of Kerala.

The divers use this versatile wooden canoe called Catamaran for this activity. These are planks of curved wood which are lashed together and rowed with a 4 feet flat splint of bamboo.

The fishing catamarans remain out all night long in the deep seas . Here the catamaran is in the open sea but about 6-10 feet away from a huge rock face at the bottom of which the mussels are tethered. A most dangerous place to be as the sea water seethes and hurls itself in a periodic rhythm of fury. It is a fine art that these fishermen follow to time their dives with the rhythm of the breaking waves so that they do not get wiped out.

All shots taken on my recent trip to Kovalam, Kerala. Perched on the precarious rock face at about 0700-0830 AM
