Shitennō-ji Temple

Tennōji-ku

Osaka, Japan

Photographed from a corner of the inside temple grounds.

Here's some info on the temple from Wikipedia:

"Shitennō-ji (Japanese: 四天王寺, Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings) is a Buddhist temple in Ōsaka, Japan. It is also known as Arahaka-ji, Nanba-ji, or Mitsu-ji. The temple is sometimes regarded as the first Buddhist and oldest officially-administered temple in Japan, although the temple complex and buildings have been rebuilt over the centuries, with the last reconstruction taking place in 1963. Shortly after World War II, Shitennō-ji became independent of the parent Tendai sect, and formed the "Wa" sect (wa-shū, 和宗) of Buddhism."

The temple has been rebuilt many times, most recently in 1963 and is a bit scaled down from the previous build. The five tiered pagoda was completely reduced to rubble in 1934 during the Muroto typhoon. I was continually in awe at how the many shrines and temples in Japan, most hundreds of years old, have been rebuilt, sometimes almost to the exact specifications of the originals. Japan is a large island, and is buffeted by the sea, shaken by earthquakes, and at the mercy of sometimes violent elements, yet still the history and architecture of the past is preserved and restored continually.

The Bayon Temple was built in the late 12th or early 13th century A.D. by Jayavarman VII, one of the Khmer Empire’s greatest kings .The Bayon Temple served as the state temple of Jayavarman’s new capital, Angkor Thom. It is unique in that it was the only state temple built primarily as a Mahayana Buddhist shrine dedicated to the Buddha.

The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces. The similarity of the 216 gigantic faces on the temple's towers to other statues of the king has led many scholars to the conclusion that the faces are representations of Jayavarman VII himself. Others have said that the faces belong to the bodhisattva of compassion called Avalokitesvara or Lokesvara. Whatever, the curious smiling image, captures everyone's attention and has been dubbed by some, the "Mona Lisa of Southeast Asia."

Two Spanish explorers spotted an old temple at the verge of the jungle. They already imagine the great riches that it might hold. However, the temple is not abandoned. Soon they will meet its brave defenders…

I started building the rocks and the beach last year as a base for some castle ruins. Now I’ve finally been reunited with my bricks and decided to finish it, but the idea changed a bit. The landscape looked exotic enough to put an Aztec temple on top of it instead.

It was surprisingly difficult to reflect the characteristics of Aztec architecture. I wanted to showcase some interesting techniques and patterns, but very soon it started to look like baroque. After all, I decided to keep the temple as simple as possible.

The 11th century Sahashrabahu temples (rather twin temple) was completely ruined and with magical work of the archaelogical survery of India, both were restored beautifully.

The twin temples (the bigger is seen here) were built by King Mahipal, one for his wife (Sas) and the other for his daughter-in-law (Bahu) and so the temples are together also called as Sas-Bahu temples.

Daigoji temple

In the vast grounds of Daigoji beyond the Sanboin Temple, the gardens and forest become quite dense. The foliage, colours and shade become all enveloping in some spaces. It can be very dark in the distant recesses, especially as here in the late afternoon.

The "Temple of Janus" is a cultic structure of Romano-Celtic design located in Autun, Saône-et-Loire, France, to the North-West of the ancient city of Augustodunum.

The temple lies in the centre of a vast sanctuary, whose extent and complexity was revealed by excavations conducted from 2013 to 2016, on a site whose history goes back to Neolithic times, and which experienced an important phase of monumental constructions in the 1st Century AD. The temple was abandoned at the onset of the Early Middle Ages, and its structures were later reused in the fashioning of a Medieval defensive work. The temple has retained two sides of its square cella, at a height of over 20 metres, as well as vestiges of its ambulatory and side structure foundations. The temple's supposed dedication to the Roman god Janus is not based on any archaeological or historic fact, and the deity that was venerated in the temple is unknown.

The Temple of Janus was included on the first list of protected historical French monuments, established in 1840. (Wikipedia)

Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion), Kyoto, Japan

The Zen Buddhist temple at Rokuon-ji in Kyoto, Japan, is known as Kinkaku-ji or the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. The top two stories of the pavilion are covered with pure gold leaf and it shimmers in the mirror pond below. Zen typology abounds, with every minute detail of the building and garden designed for aesthetic effect. Whilst the complex dates back to 1397, the current pavilion was rebuilt in 1955 after an arson attack. It is, however, a supremely peaceful and beautiful place.

The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples at Abu Simbel, near the border with Sudan. The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. They serve as a lasting monument to the king and his queen Nefertari, and commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Their huge external rock relief figures have become iconic.

This image of the ancient Roman temple in Palmyra , Syria , was taken before the barbarians of ISIL arrived. Palmyra was considered by many to be the most important & beautiful Roman city in the world. But this meant nothing to the fanatical Jihadists of ISIL as they trashed the whole site.

Well the last 4 nights have produced some of the most inspiring sun sets a photographer could hope for. As you can see from my previous pages i try and take shots using no artificial means and i have to say I’m really surprised how well these have come out.

This picture was taken at Garricks Temple, that over looks the Thames. The Temple was an homage by Garrick to Shakespeare. If it was a beautiful last night as it was in Garricks day then i can see why he did it.
