An oldie that I've never uploaded!! I wish I could group it where it belongs in the stream, about 4 months ago?

Part of the drive mechanism of an old carriage clock. The clock had been stopped for more than one year, but it is now working again thanks to the inspiration of Macro Mondays.

With opportunities being very limited for sunrises of late I went mad this weekend and dragged myself out of bed on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. I've had a few issues getting around to processing the images but finally made a start. This pic was taken before the dawn on Chemical Beach near Seaham. I've not had much luck here in the past but Thursday morning put that to rights. Best on black (Press L). Press F to fave and C to comment.

first off i hope everyone is having a wonderful thursday and thank you all for all the wonderful comments and faves etc...i appreciate them greatly! I decided to do something a little different for today..i'm trying to post a pic everyday but i don't want to say i'm doing a 365 project because as soon as i go to palestine (that is if i raise enough funds) i won't be able to post a pic a day:-) so for today i decided to post a pic of me brushing my teeth because it's something i do everyday..and plus just feeling very light hearted today and cannot always be too serious..life is way too short..we should never take ourselves too seriously..i'm in a great mood today..busy working away on our site after it's been quiet for some time now..it's going through a bit of a fall-cleaning i guess you could say! ok so now i'm back to work..

Check out the teeth on these Cambodian girls. See my previous photo for more examples.

I've seen such perfect teeth in all third world countries I've visited. Lack of refined carbohydrates (bread and sugar in particular) and constant exposure to sunlight during pregnancy and into adulthood (very high levels of vitamin D in the bloodstream), reduce dental decay to almost non-existent levels plus create strong, dense, well-formed jawlines and teeth.

Sunscreen is unheard of, and dentists don't exist here. Flouridation does not exist. Until the recent arrival of NGOs and charities, toothbrushes and toothpaste did not exist either.

Toothbrushes have caused an epidemic of hepatitis among the villagers, because a toothbrush is inevitably shared among family members. This was pointed out to me by none other than Dr Beat Richner, the famous Swiss pediatrician who founded several pediatric hospitals in Cambodia.

Teeth go bad as soon as someone moves into a larger city, and adapts to Western food (sugars, soda, juices, bread and so on).

At this particular school, I found that the supporting charity had brought in toothbrushes and flouride toothpaste, and was feeding the children (as young as 6) cheap, nutrient-free MSG-laden pot noodles (I kid you not) and giving them full-sugar soy-soda. (and to add insult to injury, soy is a known estrogenic endocrine disrupter).

It's a dentist interior .. may be this is a bit on the kitsch side of things . The little one I put there to make the pic ... it normally resides on the receptionists desk .

Smew are small, fish-eating ducks that breed around forest lakes in the taiga zone across northern Eurasia. They are a scarce and declining winter visitor to Britain (c125 individuals), and they are red listed because of a >50% decline. But the decline may be climate related with birds remaining in Europe for the winter, rather than a real decline in numbers. Sometimes a big freeze on the continent results in a larger influx of Smew to Britain.

You have heard the expression as rare as hen's teeth. Well how about duck teeth? This Smew appears to have a complete double set of dentures, top and bottom. But these aren't really teeth, they are serrations of the bill. The cutting edge of the bill is known as the tomium (plural tomia) and in some birds the tomia are serrated to help them catch fish, or snip through grass stems. No extant birds have proper teeth. Proper teeth emerge from the gums and are covered with hard enamel. Animals like lizards, crocodiles and mammals have proper teeth but somewhere during the evolution of birds they lost the ability to produce enameled teeth. Archaeopteryx from the Jurassic had teeth (around 150 million years ago), and fossils of "proper" birds from the Cretaceous (c145 - 66 million years ago) had teeth. But somewhere around 80 million years ago bird teeth disappeared, as they evolved ways round the need for teeth. For example, instead of chewing they grind their food in the muscular gizzard, sometimes swallowing grit to help with this. This shows the hooked bill and serrations on the bill amazingly well for the Smew's piscivorous diet. Alas, I have never managed to photograph the teeth on a wild Smew as they rarely allow close approach. This was a captive individual at Martin Mere but I thought it was too interesting not to post. Here's a photo of a wild drake Smew: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52637951691/in/photolist

note the crooked teeth in the left and right corners from the wisdom teeth that are growing in.there are also enamel filling in the front and in between fillings in the back of the bottom and top.

Wet plate collodion on glass (negative).

About 12 years ago I was out for a walk and encountered a dumpster someone had next to their driveway - it seemed they were moving and clearing out a lifetime's worth of junk. maybe 2/3 of the dumpster was filled with brown paper boxes about the size of a single shoe, and curiosity led me to open one to see what it contained. Inside were plaster casts of teeth! There had to have been thousands of these in the dumpster. I salvaged a couple boxes of them, and to this day I regret not going back and salvaging 50 or 60 more boxes of them. They are exquisitely made, and some have a very soapy glossy finish to them. They feel really nice to touch. Creepy, huh?

2:30 second exposure at f11.5 with Coffer's #7 for negatives. Developed in well-seasoned Iron sulfate neg developer.

NAS North Island, 19 January 1987.

This photo is painful for me to watch. O-2A 721349 NJ-542 came in at North Island when I walked back from the beach to the car. I did not see it approaching and all I could make was this unsharp photo. But here it is, because it's as rare as hens' teeth.

VFA-125 'Rough Raiders' had six of these former USAF Cessna Skymasters in use as shooting range controllers. They were based at NAS Fallon Naval Air Station in Nevada until 1990. This particular machine was transferred to the US Army. In 1997 it received the civilian registration N679P and was operated by the US Army out of Yuma Proving Ground. It's now on the civil registry as N463DA.

Week 7/52

Dakota is 3 years and approximately 4 months old, as a best guesstimate. She's been on raw since she was about 1.5 years old. Although I brush her teeth about once every few months, I attribute her super clean teeth to the RMBs (raw meaty bones) she has for most of her meals. See last week's post for additional info regarding a raw diet.

My submission this week was meant to show off Dakota's teeth. The best way I knew how to accomplish this was by throwing something at her to catch. Soooo...I decided a stick would do the trick. While composition is a bit lacking, I think I was successful in capturing her pearly white teefths!
