This is Bothello 2, my second attempt at an Othello-playing robot. Based on parts from the 51515 Mindstorms Robot Inventor: a hub, two medium motors, and a light sensor. Learn more and see it in action

here.

The board has 36 rollers that can rotate to represent empty (green) positions or black or white disks. Each roller is connected through a gear plate to a separate axle sticking out of one side of the board. A cart uses a motor to travel along the axles. With another motor, it pushes select axles to make the corresponding rollers rotate to white. I've programmed a very basic minimax optimization routine for it to come up with a decent move.

At the end of each turn, the cart to flip a switch to mark that it's the human's turn. It then waits for you to make your move and flip it back. That's the signal for it to map out the new state of the board by scanning the positions of all axles with the light sensor.

The actuation is a bit hit and miss, and will be my top priority to improve if I ever get to a Bothello 3. Other than that, it all works very well.

Thomas Edison Technical Arts Academy and Terence C. Reilly School conducted our district’s first “heART of Healthy Cooking” series on Tuesday, March 2 at 7pm. The goal of the program is to give parents and students the educational tools & skills to prepare nutritious, low fat/low sugar meals for their family. The program is in collaboration with the American Heart Association, Rutgers SNAP nutrition program, Elizabeth YMCA and Shaping Elizabeth organizations. The night was spearheaded by Mr. Paul Conte and his Culinary Arts Students. The night began with Team Conte preparing a delicious heart healthy meal for parents and students at Edison Academy. The action then moved to the iLeap Center and auditorium. Parents received instruction from Culinary Arts students Sam Henriquez and Leonardo Barbano, who demonstrated how they prepared the food that was served. Registered Dieticians then provided a bilingual presentation on the art and science of good nutrition.

Parents and students will attend a 2nd day of preparation and instruction on April 21. The event culminates on May 18 with a parent/student “Top Chef” competition, complete with prizes such as free YMCA memberships.
