Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt

(September 2018 to February 2019)

Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt explores the medium since the mid-2000s, when major technological advancements, such as increased access to broadband, social media, smart phones and newly available means of making, profoundly changed the way videogames are designed, discussed and played. This change has opened the door to new voices and ideas, allowing the medium to break beyond its perceived boundaries and aspire to new horizons.

What does it take to make a videogame? Rarely seen design materials from the desks and hard drives of leading designers sit alongside specially commissioned multimedia installations to provide new perspectives and insights into the craftsmanship and inspiration behind a selection of groundbreaking contemporary videogames.

From the cinematic blockbusters of large AAA studios to the modest and often intimate work of independent designers, this section of the exhibition presents an eclectic and diverse range of voices and work from across game design. All are united by their ambitions to break boundaries.

As tools to make games have become more available and distribution has broadened, game designers have begun to engage more widely with social and political debates. The second section of the exhibition presents the work and voices of the influential game makers and commentators who are leading critical discussion and debates that challenge not only ideas about videogames and what they should be, but how this relates to society as a whole.

Online player communities connected through servers and social platforms create, collaborate and spectate together. From mind-blowing megastructures built in Minecraft to the vast array of fan art that embraces and extends beloved virtual worlds, their work sees them transcend the role of the designer to democratise design on a vast scale. A large scale immersive installation in this section celebrates the dazzling imagination and creative chaos shown by videogame players.

From the online to the offline the playful exhibition finale looks to the rise of a new DIY arcade scene. Handmade arcade cabinets and interactive installations of spectacle and performance provide a punk alternative to the traditional arcade space that playfully reminds us of the social power of videogames.

technically this photo is blurry... but something about it prevented me from deleting...

SIC garage, Malaysian Moto3 2017

In reverse it seems to work fine. Goes straight, turns when I ask it to. In forward it spins uncontrollably in a circle. I checked if both front wheels are spinning and they work fine and appear to point straight even while spinning. It's front wheel drive and the alignment is adjustable but now matter what I try there it still spins crazy. Awaiting tech support before I open it up and start to tinker.

The Specialized Technical Committees (STCs), which constitute an important technical organ of the African Union (AU), were established under Article 25 of the African Economic Community Treaty (the Abuja Treaty). With the transformation of the OAU into the AU, the STCs were carried over by the Constitutive Act of the African Union under Articles 14 to 16.

The STCs are expected to work in close collaboration with the various departments of the Commission (AUC) so as to provide well-informed inputs in their areas of specialization to the work of the Executive Council. They should also, be involved in monitoring programme development and implementation by the AUC and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) on behalf of the Executive Council.

Therefore, the early operationalization of the STCs becomes imperative, given the overall objective of accelerating continental integration and the importance attached to the effective implementation of programmes and projects of the Union. To this end, the Assembly of the Union adopted The Decision; Assembly/AU/Dec.227 (XII) reconfiguring the existing STCs and created one on Communication and Information Technologies called Committee on Communication and ICT (CCICT);

The main activities and objectives of the CCICT in its areas of concern are :

I. Prepare projects and programmes of the Union and submit them to the Executive Council;

II. Ensure the supervision, follow-up and evaluation of the implementation of adopted programmes decisions taken by the organs of the Union;

III. Ensure the coordination and harmonization of projects and programmes of the Union;

IV. Submit to the Executive Council either on its own initiative or at the request of the Executive council reports and recommendations on the implementation of the AU programmes;

V. Carry out any other functions assigned to it for the purpose of ensuring the implementation of the provisions of the African Union Constitutive Act;

VI. Establish African Common e-strategies;

VII. Establish Pan-African TV and Radio Channels;

VIII. Discuss resources mobilization and capacity building for the implementation

IX. Oversee the promotion, co-ordination and the strengthening of CIT programmes for the accelerated economic growth of Africa;

X. Develop mechanisms through which CIT contributes to the establishment of the African information Society;

XI. Promote public investments on CIT infrastructure services and applications;

XII. Develop frameworks for the harmonization policies and regulations in the Continent.

The expected result is a Ministerial declaration with recommendations drawn from the reports, strategies and action plans for projects and programs implementation
