Top left: pen and pencil technical drawing, A4
Bottom: photos of the production of the skirt and of the finished garment
Conversely, the skirt required precise measurements and technical sketching. I decided to produce it in four different parts that would be cut and stitched independently before being assembled according to a specific diagram. The first was a simple skirt base on top of which three panels of folds (A, B and C) were each divided into different shades of gold and copper. Panels A and B were directly sewn on the base whilst C was adjusted onto panel B at the end. All panels followed patterns I had drawn and numbered and the folds were first created on the mannequin, in the same coarse cream cotton I had used for the skirt base, then laid flat to be reinforced with metal rods and cardboard. Some of them were dyed in copper tones and others in gold, using spray fabric paint and glued up glitter, whilst the rest was overlaid with gold lamé and cream satin. This created a contrast in texture whilst retaining unity in the colour theme. The finished outfit does differ slightly from the conceptual drawing in some respects but these differences reflect practical changes I chose to make during the course of my project.
