Early morning rain yesterday coated a potted plant's long, slender leaves with nice little beads of raindrops. I saw it straight-on from my initial vantage point and figured that a macro across the narrow width of the long leaves (orange lily if you must know) might give me a sharp plane of droplets with a lot of out-of-focus drops. I do not subscribe to the generally overdone fascination with 'bokeh' shots which seem to focus (pun intended) on the 'character' of the out-of-focus elements at the expense of real subject matter. But once in a while I do find a subject that I feel takes advantage of it. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lense, Aperture priority mode, f/5.6 (recorded rather than actual value due to lense extension), 1/100 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: resize to 9000x6000 pixels, reduce exposure slightly, increase contrast slightly, boost black level slightly, increase vibrance slightly, apply noise reduction, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: adjust tone curve to darken the bottom (less than) 10% of the curve, keep the middle 80% at default levels and slightly increase/brighten the top 10%, reduce the yellow channel saturation slightly locally in the area of the sharp central raindrops to reduce the somewhat distracting colour of the right-of-centre blob, duplicate the resulting base image to a new working layer and significantly increase the contrast to crisp up the raindrops disregarding the impact on the rest of the image, duplicate the base image to a layer above the crispy layer, use a soft-edged eraser tool to remove the sharp raindrop edge area only from the top layer to reveal the crispy edge from the layer below, create new working layer from the visible result, sharpen, save, scale to 6000x4000 pixels (my preferred working size for prepping an image to be posted online), add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale image to 1800 wide for posting.

Decided to make some angry birds cupcakes at the spur of the moment and it was so much fun! I think they turned out great, considering it was my first time to use fondant. I guess playing with play-doh during my childhood came in handy :) Hopefully next time i can come up with something more elaborate.

This is a good lens. Very sharp. Glass is clean and in good shape.

The allium christophii, or "Star of Persia" flower is a rather striking spring bloom that we're now seeing in the Duluth Rose Garden.

Approximately 10 inches in diameter, these perennials produce up to 100 small flowers per bloom with a metallic-like sheen. I like the little spokes they form too.

Taken 5 June 2012 in the Duluth (MN) Rose Garden.

Olympus E-P1 with Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens and Petri tele-wide viewfinder.

The finder is from a converter lens set for an old Petri 45mm fixed-lens rangefinder and has two sets of frame lines. The wide frame lines match really well with the 20mm lens on the E-P1. The frame lines for the tele lens aren't much use for composition but they do make it easier to center the subject for AF.

The total weight of the gear taken to the Azores. I was a little worried that this would be a problem because max weight of handlugage the airline allowed was no more than 7Kg (and even less on the way back). Just the weight of the bodies, lenses and bag alone was 6.87Kg.

This is one of the most popular Takumar lenses and one of the most flexible to use. Up to now this is my one SMC Takumar. All the others are Super-Takumar versions. They are older and do not have the famed Pentax SMC coating.
