My weekly survey for Butterfly Conservation is Sussex gave me record numbers today. 110 butterflies including 90 males and 20 females. This was more than double the number I saw in the same week and on the same transect last year. This very fresh male posed particularly well for me.
A compilation shot showing both sides of the female silver studded blue on the Ashdown Forest this week. On the underside, you can see some very clear silver studs, from which she gets her name. Despite being a 'blue', like most female lycaenidae she is predominantly brown for camouflage purposes.
