The Spider and the Fly (poem)

The Spider and the Fly

Subject(s)fable

Children's verse

The Spider and the Fly

“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,

'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;

The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,

And I've a many curious things to shew when you are there.”

“Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain,

For who goes up your winding stair

-can ne'er come down again.”

~By Mary Howitt, 1829

The Spider and the Fly is a poem by Mary Howitt (1799-1888), published in 1829. The first line of the poem is "'Will you walk into my parlour?' said the Spider to the Fly." The story tells of a cunning Spider who ensnares a naive Fly through the use of seduction and flattery. The poem is a cautionary tale against those who use flattery and charm to disguise their true evil intentions. When Lewis Carroll was readying Alice's Adventures Under Ground for publication he replaced a parody he had made of a negro minstrel song with a parody of Howitt's poem. The "Lobster Quadrille", in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is a parody of Howitt's poem; it mimics the meter and rhyme scheme, and parodies the first line, but not the subject matter, of the original.

Stormtrooper Bruce has been watching Palpatine’s nephew while his parents are away on holiday. It’s been hard coming up with new and fun things to do each day, but STB does the best he can.

Vader: Pardon my intrusion on your breakfast, I’ve just come to check on how things are going. And to give you a heads... up. What in the Great Galaxy is going on here?

STB: Good morning, Sir. It’s no intrusion, you’re always welcome. Today we’re celebrating Galactic Indoor Fun Day.

Spaz: Hello Mr. Vader! I sure missed you. Did you miss me? Are you and Cujo Kitty having fun? Does he miss me? I sure miss him. Doncha just love my trampoline? My new bestie Taz and I are having lots of fun! If you ask nicely, I bet Unka Dude would let you join us. Oh, and today my name is Spaz!

Vader: Galactic Indoor Fun Day? You just made that up, didn’t you?

STB: Well, um, yes. Yesterday we visited the Death Star Botanical Gardens. I wanted to show Spaz the space where the Corn Maze is held each year during Haunted Alley, and we saw something that made me want to stay inside today.

Spaz: Oh, it was horrible. It was a big, huge, gigantically enormous basilisk! It was also the most awesomest thing I’ve ever seen!!! I bet it escaped from Unka Pappy’s Petting Zoo!

Vader: A what?

STB: A snake, sir. Or a snake skin. Really super duper Jurassic Park Jabba the Hutt big! Probably aged me a few years. I reported it, but decided it best to just stay inside for a day or two. Bought Spaz this new toy, which in hindsight may not have been the best choice.

Vader: Not sure how much coffee you two have had but you’re both a little cray-cray. I’m referring to all this... clutter. Your quarters are a disaster! I was going to ask you to watch Cujo while I’m away for a few days, but now I’ll have to make other arrangements.

STB: Too much clutter? Really? Are you joking? Oh, sorry, I forgot you don’t joke. Maybe we can do a Yard Sale to get rid of this... clutter, and the credits can go toward Palpatine’s Find the Droid Campaign.

Spaz: Wowzer! What a great idea! If I sell my toys that’ll just make room so I can get new ones! And Unka Pappy will love all the credits we raise, too! Let's all bounce to celebrate!

Viewing Large is always fun. Just click on the image.

It baffled me too when I sorted through my pics. At the time it seemed the right thing to do. Yes, it's a standing lamp and the geodesic roof window plus sky is real. But the angle of the sunshades outside?

One shot. No HDR. No manipulation or editing whatsoever. Nice colours though.

For the record: photographed at the Ritz Carlton in Moscow. It was taken outside on the veranda and the parasols are reflected in the windows, hence the odd angle and mystery. Your mind immediately tells you that the lamp is indoors, when in fact it isn't.

The snow finally arrived here today, so here's another warm coloured upload to help beat the cold! :)

It's the fringe from the lamp shade of a table lamp!

The most aggravating parts of the process is almost done. There is still trim work to do, but the hardest part is done.

Now, I’m thinking about the soft furnishings to set the scene.

Second photo below the very gorgeous light, at least a dozen or more of Artimede Tolemo table LED lights mounted on a ring. Most notable, the difference in light color temperature.

After a day of getting soaked just getting in and out of the car, driving through floods in the Swansea Valley with not a hope of getting an outdoor shot, I settled for a table lamp on my sideboard, The bokeh comes from our Christmas Tree reflected in a mirror next to the lamp.

I built 4 new panels for my Lego table lamp: a nativity scene, a snowman, a chapel and a present under the christmas tree.
