i love discovering the surprises in our common experience - like loving okra, aversion to housekeeping, walking in the rain, preference for the savoury,

and in finding the strangest things so incredibly dear.

i've been tagged by the lovely Vanita for this assignment - to share 16 somethings about myself.

1. apparently i am a complete goofball at trying to take my own picture.

2. i love the moon, halloween, praying mantids, the smell of the top of the baby's head, truffles, cicadas, trains, rain, mermaids, music, octopi, 8, Q, twilight, spiders' webs, cooking, writing and old things.

3. my mother and father are redheads, so i am doubly so.

4. on a particularly mild spring day in sixth grade, i ran home at lunch to see the kittens. i put the box of our two cats' 9 new kittens from the basement to the back yard , thinking it feel wonderful for them. when i came home it had become so warm, all but one of the kittens had died in the sun. hopefully i've atoned with a lifetime of being friend to feline and having felines as friends.

5. i am equal parts charismatic gregarian and passionate hermit..

6. my daughter was baptised in an 800 year-old monastery in the greek islands.

7. i love dancing with babies, dancing in the kitchen, and once danced with a light pole, and not in that way - but in the way that i still believe we are friends.

8. i am experienced.

9. i prefer deep communication to small talk, spirituality over religion, gentleness over argument, and pickles.

10. my dreamlife is vivid and relentless. i have distinct childhood memories that must have been dreams, since no one will corroborate them with actual events.

12. i once crawled out of a baggage conveyor chute to get out of a locked airport.

13. a palm reader once told me he didn't wish to know me and gave me my money back.

14. apparently i have certain characteristics of synesthesia.

15. i dislike flip-top caps on toothpaste, most TV, high overpasses, bees, broccoli, raisins and rudeness in any form. and football, and oh - i should shut up now, before i get to sensible shoes.

16.i have no problem with the natural food chain, yet do not eat meat, save for seafood.

17. i am known by many different names.

18. music fuels my life.

19. i love laughter, frequently to tears, and value compassion above all virtues.

A square root is not square - beak in the soil

And platforms at the side to make a scale -

Its shape is pointy, not to touch or spoil,

The name is not related, to unveil.

Integers have the smell of wholemeal bread

It’s good to see them, trustful and secure

The move around, a necklace and a bead,

One after one, easy and demure.

Negative numbers are a bit too steep

To see: they’re real but with a hue

Of black, of void, of unexplored deep.

A -1 lets slip its shades of blue.

The signs we cannot see are +, -, x and /,

They have no colours of their own, existing for precision.

So far the letters scarlet A, blue B, purple D, yellow E, green F, gray H, white I, chartreuse K, coffee with cream L, dark chocolate brown M, and dull yellowish U sport the colors that I, as a synesthete, associate with them.

Synesthesy abstract painting sound color shape

I hate how when you process something it always comes out way DARKER than it was...

Often I'll go on about how I see myself as similar to the bass guitar in terms of personality when I listen to it in a song. For instance, I hear the instrument in 'In the City' and see it as very everyday-like, normal, then, oh, something different or interesting happened and it's got my interest. That's a kind of personality or lifestyle I evoke out of it. Then it transcends to me because I think I'm like that.

So I put up the proper expression - the expression I have under the 'In the City' title is a blank one waiting for interest to occur.

So essentially, all the song titles relate to the expressions on my face in terms of how I see the personality of the song or, largely the bass in the song:

'Another Day in Paradise' - I look (or try to look) devoted and sensitive and romantic in a way, as I see the bass in the song (as well as myself) such and like it's devoted or loving to someone.

'In the City' - blank, everyday-like, before something different happens.

'One Thing Leads to Another' - I see the vocals, actually, at the end of the song as kind of frustrated or irritated as they sing the chorus. I see myself acting that way or looking that way if I were to sing it so that's my expression (if you can see it, the damn software put it into jpg. and darkened it enormously). This is the only song that doesn't draw my expression from the personality I evoke from the bass.

'Head Over Heels' (Go-Go's) - I'm interested and happy and quirky because I see myself as being that way, off to meet a couple of girls for the day, excited. That's how I see and evoke out of the bass in the song.

Unfortunately the last two heads of mine are bigger and darker and different than the first two because I had to take them separately when I started this, compared to the first two which were taken in much the same way (I couldn't reproduce the same effect, darn!) It's why I see this as a half successful/half failed attempt at an idea I've had in my head for months, where my faces are just horizontally, properly lined up next to each other, one face overlapping the other.

I also forgot to soften and drop-shadow each head, so the effect is rigid and sharp and straight and annoying. I didn't do that good of a job.

Synesthesia is a neurologically-based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. In one common form of synesthesia, known as grapheme → color synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored, while in ordinal linguistic personification, numbers, days of the week and months of the year evoke personalities. In spatial-sequence, or number form synesthesia, numbers, months of the year, and/or days of the week elicit precise locations in space (for example, 1980 may be "farther away" than 1990), or may have a (three-dimensional) view of a year as a map (clockwise or counterclockwise).

there's a little bit of education for the day. :)

On another note, I particularly like this picture, Samantha is such a beautiful girl and she is equally as awesome :)
