Anne Patterson, who has synesthesia - a neurological condition that gives her the ability to see music and hear color - is artist in residence for 2013 at Grace Cathedral. Throughout 2013, Patterson's installations of moving, colored light and miles of shimmering ribbons will illuminate the vaulted Gothic columns during church concerts and interact with the music.

My husband Roby's fascination with synesthesia led him to conduct an artistic experiment. The goal? Paint on a canvas for 7 minutes while listening to 1 of 7 types of music..producing 7 canvases for each sound = 49 finished canvases. He was curious to see how the sounds he listened to affected his paintings (colors/styles used, etc.) and met with some interesting results. Roby then designed a carpet collection using his paintings as inspiration, labeling it Sound and Fury.

So far in this album these letters ~ scarlet A, blue B, purple D, yellow E, green F, chartreuse K, coffee with cream L, dark chocolate brown M, and dull yellowish U ~ sport the colors that I, as a synesthete, have associated with them ever since I learned the alphabet.

Synesthesia is a condition where one's sensory "wires are crossed." Hearing colors or tasting shapes. The most common occurrence is seeing letters of numbers in certain colors.
Technically this painting started out as a commission, but then things sort of fell through, so I'm happy to have it hanging in my living room to this day.

Late last night I read a tweet from Chris about a strange discovery he made about himself. Basically, in reading a Reddit post about a girl with synesthesia, he discovered that he has a condition known as aphantasia, which means he doesn’t possess what we’d call a “mind’s eye.” He apparently has always thought that when people say things like, “Picture yourself on a beach,” or, “Imagine the audience is naked,” he thought they were just being poetic or speaking in metaphor, rather than actually conjuring a mental image. It was such an interesting thing to hear about! We spent some time this morning discussing the condition, its implications, and taking turns talking about how how we think about things, what our mental abilities are, etc. Personally, I thought it was really interesting, fun conversation. It got us all thinking about how we approach creative visuals and what mental road blocks we might have that we didn’t even know about.
I got a call from Emily this morning about making a decision on the induction thing. After a lot of back and forth, we landed on not doing the appointment on the 30th. We want to give Crosby a chance to do his own thing, and if he waits too long and it turns into an emergency, they’ll make room for us.
We had a SOTU meeting this morning and video strategy meeting this afternoon at 3:30. I managed to squeeze in editing that research footage between meetings, luckily. Everyone seems shocked that I came in today, but it is my last day most likely! New Jim was at the video strategy meeting, which was kind of nice. He got to see what our work load is like and how we talk about projects in the early stages.
My back was KILLING me tonight. I went to bed early after lying on the bed for a long time holding Emily’s future vagina ice on my back. No fun!

David Eagleman is a neuroscientist with joint appointments in the departments of neuroscience and psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. His areas of research include time perception, vision, synesthesia, and the intersection of neuroscience with the legal system. He directs the Laboratory for Perception and Action, and is the founder and director of Baylor College of Medicine’s Initiative on Neuroscience and Law. He has written several neuroscience books, including "Wednesday is Indigo Blue: Discovering the Brain of Synesthesia," co-authored with Richard Cytowic, the forthcoming "Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Unconscious Brain," "Plasticity: The Dynamically Reorganizing Brain," and "Cognitive Neuroscience," co-authored with Jonathan Downar. He enjoys a parallel career as a writer. His book "Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives," became an international bestseller, is published in 22 languages and was named a Best Book of the Year by Barnes and Noble, New Scientist, and the Chicago Tribune. He recently performed a musical reading of Sum at the Sydney Opera House with British musician Brian Eno and German composer Max Richter. Eagleman is translating Sum into a full opera to be performed in 2012 at the Royal Opera House in London.
