I am thrilled by the colors I see when I look at the letters of the name my parents gave me. “B” was bright blue, “A” was fire engine red, and “R” was rich blue-green. Imagine. Blue, red, green, blue, red, green, red. How strikingly beautiful a name.

Synesthesia is a neurologically based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

Many composers and musicians are known to have developed sound to colour synesthesia. I wanted to represent this phenomenon in this photo.

I was playing with a prism and the wonderful sunset light we've got the last few days in London. The diffracted rays were reflected on my Admira nylon string guitar.

Wassily Kandinsky -

A Motley Life [1907]

Das bunte Leben [1907]

München, Lenbachhaus - wikimedia

********************************************************************************

"A Motley Life" (1907) by Wassily Kandinsky depicts a vibrant, crowded scene filled with diverse figures and activities, suggesting a complex and multifaceted view of life. The painting, executed in tempera on canvas, showcases Kandinsky's early exploration of color, form, and narrative, while also hinting at his later development of abstract art.

Here's a more detailed interpretation:

1. A Scene of Diverse Activities: The painting presents a multitude of figures engaged in various actions: people eating, laughing, praying, a mother and child, a priest, elders, an archer, a knight, a musician, and more. This chaotic yet engaging collection of individuals and events gives the impression of a bustling, vibrant, and possibly even contradictory view of life.

2. Expressionistic Style: Kandinsky employs bold colors and dynamic forms, characteristic of the Expressionist movement. The figures are stylized, and the overall atmosphere is dreamlike and intense, reflecting the emotional depth Kandinsky aimed to convey.

3. Early Exploration of Abstraction: While not fully abstract, "A Motley Life" demonstrates Kandinsky's early interest in transcending purely representational art. The painting's composition, with its aerial perspective and overlapping elements, can be seen as a step towards the more abstract forms and compositions he would later develop.

4. Synesthesia and Spiritualism: Some interpretations suggest that Kandinsky, potentially influenced by synesthesia, aimed to evoke a sense of sound and movement through visual means. Furthermore, the painting can be seen as an early expression of Kandinsky's interest in the spiritual dimensions of art, a theme he would later elaborate on in his writings.

5. Contrasts and Contradictions: The painting juxtaposes joyous and somber moments, earthly and spiritual elements, suggesting a complex and sometimes contradictory nature of life. This interplay of contrasting elements contributes to the painting's overall sense of dynamism and intrigue.

6. Influence of Russian Culture: The painting's roots are deeply anchored in Russian culture, with elements like the Russian Orthodox priest and the depiction of a Russian town visible in the background. This grounding in his cultural heritage is important to understanding Kandinsky's artistic development.

In essence, "A Motley Life" is a rich and complex artwork that encapsulates Kandinsky's early artistic explorations, his growing interest in abstraction, and his engagement with themes of spirituality, culture, and the multifaceted nature of human experience.

Lifetime Dream # 15 of my list of 155: I will learn to play every song on Joe Satriani's self-titled album that was such a tremendous influence on my life. With each song I will delve deeper into my blues roots, and the memories of this album and its influence on my life.

I have referenced this song previously in my 365 Days project, both in 2010 that was strictly dedicated to music and in 2009 as well. This album came out during a very influential time in my life, a period where much change was happening in my soul. I was dying to my past and coming alive to the many passions of music that I had long-since tried to kill off… it was the absolute best year of my life.

This abum is Joe Satriani’s heaviest blues album… it’s one that I think people either love or hate; I’d wager to say that most people who don’t like the album never really listened to the album. That’s how I was at first. I have a gift called Synesthesia where I can see music in color, and this album is one of the most brilliantly and vividly colored albums I have ever heard.

Technically and musically, this is a very difficult album to master. Speed isn’t always the only thing that makes playing difficult… I’ll take it song by song and learn this album… there’s just something about playing music… especially instruments where you are connected to the instrument- where you can feel the music come alive through you… it’s an amazing gift we have received.

Synesthesia in art:

Sometimes defined as the simultaneous perception of multiple stimuli in one gestalt experience.

This ring has been nothing less than 'synesthetic' to me from it's very inception. When I looked at a piece of brass wire I had just hammered and worked into whimsical curves, I heard jazz (in my imagination, anyway).

A magenta square from a recycled vintage earring with scroll-like flourishes, burgundy Swarovski Crystals, and a tear-shaped freshwater pearl, scatter all over the curved brass wire like bursts of jubilant noise.

This ring is a size 6.

Emulating B Craw's art.

Active Assignment Weekly: 11th - 18th Oct: b craw

To emulate the work of this photographer.

Assignment set by nophoto4jojo

I got inspiration from his picture based on synesthesia. It wasn't so much the picture itself, but the thinking behind it - synesthesia - that moment when one sensory input (music, for me), triggers a second vision in an image.

There are three different images here, which I then manipulated in PSE5.

It shows my feelings about Stravinsky's "The Firebird". It's more than just listening or watching the ballet, it's feeling it too.

Lifetime Dream # 122 of my list of 155: I will learn the song, Cast Your Fate Into The Wind, by Vince Guaraldi, on the piano. I will make a nice recording of it, when I am able to play it flawlessly. I will play the song often, remembering warm memories of the fall seasons.

Completed On: May 31, 2006

When I worked at target years ago, there was a new release by George Winston, who recorded several songs of The Peanuts. The only song that I ever really knew and remembered was of course the infamous Peanuts Theme song. I bought this album and the first track was a song called “Cast your Fate Into The Wind”. I was blown away.

The colors of this song were and are simply amazing. Having Synesthesia makes listening to songs a whole different experience… some better than others. This song really spoke to me and moved me. Whenever I think of the Fall, this is one of the many songs that brings a smile to my face. Vince’s style is difficult at times, and yet this was very worthy of a lifetime dream; it wasn’t easy to say the least!

For those who don’t know what Synesthesia is, here you go: Basically I can see music in color:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia

Here

I need to be more present, more focused, and definitely more here. I have always had problems focusing on anything besides the space around me. Not in an attention deficit way, but the simple fact that physical and mental color take up most of the area around me. When you have synesthesia, music, voices, personalities, feelings, and objects have a physical and spatial presence around you. Sometimes I see colors pouring out of my friends' mouths. When I drive, occasionally the music playing in the car makes the street turn yellow and bright green. Other times, I'm mentally picturing the words I'm speaking, and they are displayed on a white screen with purple zig zags and red circles. There is always something distracting me. When I was younger it was exciting and interesting, but some days it's plain distracting. I need to make myself more present so I can hear an entire story, listen to every instrument in a song, or be in a room without any colors. This series is me taking note of these colors, loving that they exist, but knowing how and when to put them to the back of my mind when I need to.

I need to be here.

64-73/365

eminems nsfw lyrics come out just as colourful here, with minimal instrumentation and a simple drum line, the image is dominated by eminems mid-tone rainbow raps. Notice the double-thickness band where the chorus is repeated.

In which I try to replicate what a synesthete would percieve as a series of sounds heard on a train going through a tunnel and over points.

Just playing around on the very edges of an idea with this one.
