I saw this couple walking together and fiddling with their gloves. The synchronicity of their actions caught my attention.
Smoke Photo Art.
I have had this concept stewing around my head for a while. In fact I had taken a stab at this one with the smoke that ended up being the Mad Scientist. I revisited it this past week and found a smoke photo that I liked with it. But don't be surprised if I rework it again at some point. This one is best viewed large.
Thanks to those who commented on my last one....and especially those of you who have consistently noticed my work.

I like... the synchronicity of the birds against the blue water.
I don't like... That they are just behind the wall of ice that has built up on the shores of Lake Ontario... and that I didn't have the 600mm lens attached.,. so this is a cropped section from the 300mm shot.

While I was writing my last post, I came across the following poem filed away long ago and this photo taken a few days ago and realized that both together could be the perfect epilogue for my previous words:
" He who knows his soul knows this truth:
I am beyond everything finite; I now see that the Spirit, alone in a space with Its ever-new joy, has expressed Itself as the vast body of nature.
I am the stars,
I am the waves,
I am the Life of all,
I am the laughter within all hearts,
I am the smile on the faces of the flowers and in each soul.
I am the Wisdom and Power that sustain all creation. "

Aberdeen Highland Games.
Despite the weather (cold + wind + rain = typical Scottish summer), it turned out to be
lots of fun.
I am not sure which dance this was, I am guessing Highland Fling... I must admit at the same time I was eyeing handsome men throwing hammers and heavy stones on the other field, so don't quote me on that one.
That's what I call it. Pay attention to the dogs here, look at their paws and how
almost perfectly matched they are. This is something that can't be taught, they
figure it out for themselves and it allows them to work together and maximize
their efficiency. That... and it's a thing of beauty to watch.
Since our temps warmed we've been getting in some good runs.
noun: synchronicity
the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.
Class 221 Super-Voyager No. 221138 is about to cross Westmead Rhyne in North Somerset with 1V59, the 17:12 Bristol Temple Meads to Paignton service on Tuesday 2nd March 2021.
There is no trickery here at all; this is exactly what happened. Having arrived at this spot just too late to photograph 1E63, unusually a Voyager that day, I waited a bit longer so as not to go home empty-handed. With the camera raised to my eye and poised for the shot I became conscious of a runner approaching rapidly away to my right. The appearance of the train coincided with the passing of the runner. I pressed the button and fired off three frames, and this is how the first one turned out.
Synchronicity I is a track from the 1983 album Synchronicity by The Police, and is a great favourite of mine. In the live performance I've linked to, check out the phenomenal work rate of drummer Stewart Copeland. Fantastic stuff.
This is quite a spectacle as thousands of swifts swarm and move in synchronicity as they come back to roost in this grade school chimney from a day of foraging elsewhere. It is quite a show, best viewed in person or by video. This occurs in September.

Met up with Steve and Adam on the Sunshine Coast for some more empty skies ( well nearly). So I thought I'd make the most of the sunlight on these magnificent sandstone rocks, coupled with some rather large seas. This shot is pretty busy I know, and probably not an ideal comp but the rock just to my left was the only thing stopping me from getting an early shower. You really have to keep an eye on the ocean, as we can get caught up in getting that shot, and forget about the dangers. I was elevated a metre or more on this shelf and still had to pull out of several shots and take cover!!

And in a little bit of synchronicity here is a picture of a Hutchison AEC relience depicted on Andrew's trip a little while later in the yard of Garelochhead awaiting entry into service. Although prepared and painted I don't think YVA148J made it into service before Garelochhead was forced to close. Here it is in the yard at Garelochhead. YVA148J was a 6MU4R with Plaxton Derwent B55F bodywork. This trip was blessed by sunshine.
“I do believe in an everyday sort of magic -- the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone.”
― Charles de Lint
Alternative title - "The synchronicity of friendship"
What can I say - I couldn't help but notice these two - but not because of those wonderfully vibrantly coloured skirts.
I was actually sitting across the canal having a coffee when I noticed them, sat on the ground opening up their lunch and I spotted the duplicate T-shirts - that was why I crossed over the bridge (ok, rushed over so I didn't lose them!). I didn't actually see the skirts, or the rest of the wicked outfits so I initially just hoped to take their torsoes to get the t-shirts, but when I saw the rest of them, I just had to do a full length. If I had seen them upright they would have caught my eye even without the tops because 30 years ago I looked rather like that and it took me back (God, almost 3 DECADES ago!!! Swoon!!!!)
I asked them if they planned the matching t-shirts, and apparently it was pure chance, they had only planned the boots. See, they obviously are so in synch that they can't help but wear the same stuff. Of course it could be that they only have 2 tops each so it's a 50:50 chance, but since they also had a clothes shop bag with them - and they are girls, I don't think that that was it :-)
They were very softy spoken and quite sweet, but again, it may just be down to the fact that some mad stranger was bothering them! They had just finished their GCSE exams and I asked them if they had any plans, but they didn't yet - well, it's so hard to know where you are going at that age.
I asked them to stand and managed to get the Cinema (Vue) logo behind and above their heads - I just liked the link with the fact they were wearing the batman t-shirts, and it almost makes it look they were part of a promo team. I should have moved them a bit more to get rid of the pole on the right... but I'm not quite there yet with managing the shot. It's like guerilla portraiture isn't it - run in, shoot and run out again. That takes a lot of practice to think so quickly.
I took four shots, all in this pose, but chose this because of Jess looking over with that smile you only get between close friends. As I was taking the photos 2 of their friends turned up looking rather bemused (hhm, I seem to cause a lot of that nowadays :-))
Anyway, thanks girls - love your style, and thanks for allowing me to intrude and be reminded of my youth. Best hopes for your futures.

Antarctic skuas (Stercorarius maccormicki) trying to impress me with their synchronised wing flapping. Well, I was.
As with most wildlife on Antarctica, these large birds are very relaxed with human presence. If you move slowly, they will let you get really close.
One day, I was photographing elephant seals on South Georgia, lying flat on my belly on the beach, a safe distance away from these massive animals.
After a while an Antarctic skua landed just in front of my Nikon 200-400 lens. It briefly look into the lens hood, pecked it a few time, and then lay down next to it and fell asleep.
I took a video of the whole event with my iPhone, just in case nobody would believe me. As impressive as the elephant seals were, it was that very intimate moment with that skua that I will never forget.

Cobblestones and a colorful facade: Paris, France.

How people interact with their environment has always intrigued me. I have a tendency to view life as an elaborate film. Every cityscape, street scene, and landscape forms a backdrop in a scene that unfolds before my eyes. When I was a child, I used to tell people that every time I blinked another scene started. And in a lot of ways, this has carried over into my photography and writing. I craft elaborate narratives in split seconds of the people who are populating any given scene and moment.
Paris is probably one of the most intriguing cities when it comes to observing people against the city's backdrop. The city itself is a complex set of characters. The days I spent there were mostly cloudy and ominous which was fascinating. I think there is a tendency to romanticize Paris as a city of sun in terms of kitschy Paris photos that seem to populate Pinterest full of lush blossoms and never-ending sunny days. But the reality (at least while I was there) was far more nuanced.
These are just a few photos I took while I walked around Paris of street scenes. Normally I take photos alone. Photography is a very solitary process for me and I tend to be "in my own head" most of the time. However, I was often with either Gael or Hugo from Rendezvous with Paris or (later in the week) also Katherine from Atout France. And, what was strange was that I really enjoyed it. It helped that everyone was a veritable fountain of interesting knowledge and that they all had a super passionate love for Paris. Typically when I shoot when other people are around it negatively influences my photography but it really wasn't the case while I was in Paris which was awesome. In fact, it was nice to talk quite a bit about all sorts of things while shooting and the icing on the cake was that I learned so much.
