so... yeah, this is mean but i mostly love this attraction b/c it's soooo badly done. it's not the fault of any of the performers... but, it is lip synched, and totally watered down... having seen the broadway version so many times, this one always makes me laugh!

Emerald Rain

Alone and adrift in a bewildering storm

my oppression takes on an emerald form

as if upon a field of gently terraced grass.

Constant pokes of attention do but harass,

and yet I find myself hoping it will never pass.

I’ll just sit and hide behind a curtain of tears

reflecting on the past as I turn my gears.

Someone once told me I should just let it go

but they don’t know the pain I know.

My loneliness is beautiful and in it I’m content.

It’s in moments like this my thoughts cement.

My mind synchs with the rhythm of waves

and I find the peace that my heart craves.

So I’ll just tarry a while until the storms fade

then address the problems I’d rather evade.

Unconditional

And the water fell like emeralds into an emerald sea

sparking in me a disappointed awe.

It seems beauty is not special but common as can be.

Who would create such a colossal flaw?

The treasure of a trillion emeralds simply dumped where all could see!

I let my selfish rage be carried

by cool and careful currents

I had let myself be harried

with desire to possess the torrents.

Once my selfish greed was drowned and buried,

I realized Holy blessings, as God warrants,

are shared equally with sinner and saint.

This problem of evil may be an abhorrence

but who am I to raise complaint?

God saw fit to share with me something none deserve.

Though green with envy and green with greed,

I saw a beauty that none could conserve.

And in that moment I think I finally understood

what people mean, “God is good.”

Music Link: "The Grid" - Philip Glass, from his score for the Godfrey Reggio film "Koyaanisqatsi". This is a very well done edit of the much longer piece which lasts almost 24 minutes. Here it is a mere 6:40, but more than enough to get the point across with hair-raising and mind blowing immediacy.

The word "koyaanisqatsi" is a Hopi word for "life out of balance". Reggio's 1983 film was the first of it's kind and a quantum leap in film making. The director started out with the very original idea to craft a film around real life footage from around the world, focusing first on the quiet solemnity and unhurried elegance of nature and then contrasting it very sharply indeed with the mad rush of human activity, perception and behaviour. The concept was to show just how literally insane the materialistic, consuming and destroying culture of the West is and that it is dangerously out of balance with the natural world.

Reggio believed modernized "First" world culture to be sick, as in not well, deep into its core for it's lost connection to the natural rhythms of nature. As its ever demanding maw grows and grows, it eats away at the planet like a cancer. He used the Hopi prophecies about this time as a way to guide the footage, which has no actors, no narration, no plots or story. Real life footage was carefully shot over years and assembled and synched to the music of Philip Glass, whose work Reggio chose for it's enormous power to reflect the themes he wanted to so viscerally display. The finished film footage and the music now are inseparable halves of a complete whole.

While a few other directors have taken on Reggio's very original and groundbreaking style and commercial TV has naturally copped his technique, the original "Koyaanisqatsi" still stands as the greatest film of its kind. Not so shocking and breathtaking now as it was back in 1983, the film still hits hard with dizzying accuracy. Yet at the heart of it all, Reggio's is not the voice of condemnation. He looks upon human beings as being caught in the snares of their own creation and feels compassion for them. A lesser mind would have moralized. Reggio does not.

I chose this piece as a natural accompaniment to Times Square imagery and because a lot of this segment IS shot in New York and indeed in Times Square. I think it musically reflects the unbelievable rush and chaos of the location, and the wider modern world, beautifully. This very hard to find video is the actual footage of the film to the accompaniment of its intended soundtrack.

I'd like to try Flash photography this winter on some of my Mushrooms. This was a 2 layer stack, one at f/3.0 to really blur the background and one at f/5.6 for the flower. No diffuser used on this test. For those of you that use a Z9, make sure d10 is set correctly. Thanks to a good Flickr friend, I'm going to take this on.

Animals express themselves via primal instincts that we tend to “humanize“ as opposed to seeing them for what they are. I

Nonetheless, there are times when both ancient inclinations and current concerns tend to be surprisingly in-synch.

Here, the “watchdog“ at Henneke Fish Hatchery in Hallettsville, Texas, covers all the bases of what he instinctively knows to do.

Guarding and standing at watch for any potential intruders … and, diligently protecting the family. It’s his inherent nature and current compulsion to do so.

When I saw him standing there, rigidly focused like a one-dog manifestation of the Queen’s Royal Guard, it stirred a profound sense of connection … a palpable, deeply moving sense of warmth and appreciation That many animal lovers don’t hesitate to describe as “love.”

Man’s (and women’s) best friend indeed.

Long live film Nikons! If you used to shoot film, and stopped, or have never used it, you should give it a try. It looks great, the cameras have never been cheaper, film and processing are still widely available, and it's fun! Just beware of film camera addiction. The older cameras are so much cooler than any of the modern plastic fantastics.

The July 31 appearance of the month's second full moon will be the first such occurrence in the Americas since August 2012. Every month has a full moon, but because the lunar cycle and the calendar year aren't perfectly synched, about every three years we wind up with two in the same calendar month.

But Earth's satellite will most likely not appear blue at all.

Typically, when a moon does take on a bluish hue, it is because of smoke or dust particles in the atmosphere, such as during a cataclysmic volcanic eruption.

The warm colors synched with the warm temperatures at sunrise on the east coast of Oahu, Hawaii.

Since California sits on the west coast of North America and there are usually mountains and cliffs behind the beaches, there are few places where you can capture good light at sunrise, but this north-facing point near Monterey does the job nicely. It is much easier to wait for sunset usually.

The problem with this place is that when the surf is up, there are too many things happening all at once. And any one of them could lead to you and your camera taking a swim in the Pacific. When I get to the beach, I'll usually go to where the action is and stand there for a while without the camera and just take it all in. Then I'll choose a spot as close to the action as possible. Those are the most memorable places for me.

In the darkness before sunrise, it can be difficult to determine how the light will be, so I focus on the waves and how the water moves, and hope for the best when it comes to the light. So I found this spot which is close to the road but requires a walk through a low spot where the waves sweep through at high tide, so you have to time it a bit.

Every once in a while a wave would strike the rock to the left in back. Sometimes nice waves would form out in the open ocean. Sometimes the wave would hit the rock in the foreground. And after some waves, the foam would gradually clear a bit allowing light to penetrate the water and show off the color in there. The problem is, all these variables were not in synch with each other. Also, the sunrise was a bright red but I was going for this shot, which at the time had little light on it. So I ignored a great sunrise and waited for a hole in the clouds to let in the sun.

Since there was too much going on for me to keep in my head, I decided to focus on capturing the wave striking the distant rock. That was the most dramatic thing. I tried about 10 times before I captured the other elements I wanted in the frame. See the notes for what I wanted. Then the good light was gone for the day and this was my only photo I kept from this morning.

The map shows exactly where this is.

George and his friend Lukey storm...something!

Figuring the exposure for full sun to be f/16 and 1/200s, I set a speedlight on each side of the boys to give me f/22 and I dropped the ambient a bit more by synching at 1/250s. Skyport triggers and a pair of Sunpak 383s.

This kitchen table setup was part of testing the Nikon SB910 Speedlight paired with an SB800. The Nikon Camera controls were set to Vivid and little post-processing was necessary. Hand synched the shutter with the fruit and many drops later...

Cactus Triggers V2s just reached home today ;) along with inverted dome flash diffuser. Money money money and... money. Every little piece in photography costs a lot, and when you buy one, you need the stuff comming along. flash>synch cable>softener>tripod>flash tripod mount>cactus triggers>etc...>etc...

But those wireless triggers are the very cheapest you can find for your cobra flash : $32.95 and i'm happy with that.

You just need to imagine first what you want to shoot and then you need to place the required articles accordingly around the subject. For example in case of water droplets; broadly there would be three possibilities, drop just collapsed, about to touch the surface and de-bounce. It is bit difficult to predict these three conditions specifically when viewing through view finder and then result may be miss timed and blurred shots. To avoid this following procedure may be tried out:

1. Place a water pan on level of your camera which must be mounted on tripod.

2. Place a tiny steady object such as nail onto the place of your interest. May be center point of the water pan!

3. Set your camera with working distance allowed by macro lens.

4. Focus the nail as sharp as possible.

5. Set shutter speed faster around 1/200 to 1/300 to freeze the droplets.

6. Set aperture as large as possible, F/5 and 1.200 may give good results.

7. WB=Auto and ISO=100 may give desired results.

8. Once the object is well focused, replace it with a controlled water stream

9. Look this water stream through view finder and ensure whether is in focus or not.

10. Do slight adjustments in working distance if required to get the sharp picture.

11. Reduce down the speed of water stream up till one drop/seconds.

12. Wait and understand for the duration between two consecutive drops and once acclimatize with the frequency of dropping droplets, release the shutter with some estimation.

13. Just collapsed, about to touch the surface and de-bouncing drops can be frozen based upon synchronization of shutter release timing and some time estimation of drops.

Your setup is ready to produce some one of the fantastic shots. You may keep some colorful objects in the back ground to achieve diffused colorful DOF.

All the best.

Many Aurora Chasers were disappointed by the show on December 22 and 23rd the forecast and Hemispheric power were out of synch with the actual results. The reality was the partical density was low and the solar wind speed was high so there was a fainter storm but there was a real storm! I was elated that I found clear sky and 2 great locations after a 8 week drought of chasing.
