The way a classic aircraft should look! This 1948 Swift is obviously well cared fore, based on the amount of work it takes to keep it polished like this!
Swifts have always fascinated me, with their speed and noise around their nest sites. I am very lucky at the moment as they nest in a number of houses close to where I live. However, living on a fairly modern housing development presents a number of problems when trying to take pictures. Firstly as the birds fly low and fast around, over and between the buildings there is only a very short window of opportunity in which to photograph them. Also, pointing a camera with a 400mm lens at someone else's house could be difficult, unless of course they already know what I’m up to!!.
Swifts really make photography difficult, in that they often fly high & slow or low & fast. Also they approach the nest sites at tremendous speed from various angles and go straight in under the roof tiles. Still, it is a challenge that I was keen to give a go, and why not given that I only have to step out of my front door.
The recent warm weather has brought around a change of behaviour from the local swifts. They seem to be making more trips back to the nest. It may be that they are just feeding the growing young. However, I have seen on a number of occasions, a swift being pulled off the house wall by another swift as it attempts to get under the tiles. I haven’t been able to work out quite what has been going on. Also their calls change a lot from a screen to almost a single note warble.
While watching the swifts the local sparrowhawk has flown over a number of times. I guess that it is around far more than I have realised but I haven’t spent that much time looking skywards. The reaction from the swifts is always to go high, but I don’t think that the sparrowhawk really has a chance of catching them.
Hopefully, these pictures do credit to an amazing bird, which has been a pleasure to watch over the weekend

TAYLOR SWIFT EDITION 2024 IS BORN -
Taylor Swift's new album is here, and it's a surprise double album!
Indeed, the original THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT includes 16 songs, but there's a 15-song addition entitled: The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.
I've listened to both editions and I'm under the spell.
The music is softer than on Taylor's other albums, and the lyrics are truly thought-provoking poems that speak directly to contemporary life.
And what better way to salute Taylor Swift's new double album than with a party at the gym, in the company of faithful companions Ulysses, Argos, and Gus.
Long live spring 2024!

Trying to photograph swifts is a great way of using up a memory card! At least these two pictures show the shape and maybe capture some of the excitement of swift flight.
My new winter build is a second hand Swift. It's huge! Hopefully I will be able to ride it in the coming week.

We went out to see some Chimney Swifts roost. They swirl around the chimney and fly in, landing atop each other. It was pretty amazing to watch, but probably not very good pictures on my little snapshot camera.

There was an article in the Seattle Times. Thousands of Vaux's Swifts spend the night in the chimney of a Monore WA school chimney during their migration stopover in the spring and fall. This is a later dusk shot as they circle in prior to dissappearing down the chimney. The last hour prior to dusk was a constant stream of swifts. My daughter was unimpressed. They apparently are a local summer resident, but most spend the summer north of WA State.
The swift is a medium-sized aerial bird, which is a superb flier.... so far challenging bird to photograph... challenge is still on..

This swift has a grey rump, making me assume it was a Grey-rumped Swift, but apparently, according to one of the birders at Sungei Buloh, this is unlikely. What do you think?
Canon EOS 5D MK2 and Canon 100 - 400 IS lens
I unexpectedly found myself with a free 90 minutes at Titchwell yesterday. As has been the case a lot in this dire spring the weather was grey, overcast, dull and cold.
Standing on the West Bank path I indulged in my annual attempt to try and get a passable picture of a Swift in flight.
My technique is to crank up the ISO setting to get a fast shutter speed, over expose, manual focus is probably better than aoutfocus with the 5D MK2, pick up the birds as they come towards you so that you can focus with them as they get closer and then fill up your memory card.
I think that I got some ok shots given the low light, but still not clinched a real professional properly exposed pin sharp image.
As ever I'd be interested in your feedback on these images and which if any work for you.
