I almost didn't take my camera with my when I went to town on errands, but I noticed 2 tall ships coming into Victoria's Inner Harbour, so I grabbed my camera as I was heading out the door.
This is a handheld shot of Victoria's Pacific Swift tallship, "a square topsail schooner, built by S.A.L.T.S. as a working exhibit at Expo '86 in Vancouver, British Columbia."

I've caught a few pictures of her this year docked, but this is my first when she's been underway. Sailboats aren't permitted to come into the harbour under sail, so I'll have to content my self with the amazing lines and masts.
Composing the ship, the legislature buildings (a.ka. the parliament buildings), and the former CP Steamship terminal made me think of the olden days, so I went with a split tone effect.
Handheld shot on my Nikon D600 and Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens at 230mm for 1/250 sec, f/14, ISO 400. Slight exposure correction and split tone processing in Lightroom 4.
I've never seen so many swifts and other small birds flying around a city - the sky was constantly full of little birds darting around.

The swift hasn't moved much on the table. Its wings are spread. Nothing appears broken, yet it can't fly. I put a lighter in front of it to give an idea of its size.

Swifts are insect eating birds that migrate south each fall. At sunset during migration they choose a place where dozens to thousands of birds can roost (sleep). Since the late 1980’s the Chapman chimney has been one of these roosting sites. Portland, Oregon
Checked on my local swifts this morning and was very happy to see approx 12 have returned, also thought my luck was in with the sun being out for all of about 5mins LOL.
So when the sun comes out again i will return to hopefully get some better shots of them,it has been lashing down in chester for the last 6 hours and still counting GRRRRR.
I went for what turned out to be one of the most amazing drives I have ever done (next to HWY 1 and some Sierra passes...) with my new found lady friend Nicole (NicoleRoundsPhotography). This is Swift Reservoir in WA on HWY 503. The fog was heavy but we came around this corner to this AMAZING sight. Enjoy!
