MahaNakhon (Thai: มหานคร) is a mixed-use skyscraper in the Silom/Sathon central business district of Bangkok, Thailand. It opened in December 2016.[1] It features the unconventional appearance of a glass curtain walled square tower with a cuboid-surfaced spiral cut into the side of the building. Following transfer of the first residential units in April 2016, at 314.2 metres (1,031 ft) with 77 floors, it was recognized as the tallest building in Thailand on 4 May 2016 by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).[2] Featuring hotel, retail and residences, 200 units of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Bangkok inside the building are priced between around US$1,100,000 to US$17,000,000, making it one of the most expensive condominiums in Bangkok.[3]
The tower is the shape of a square prism with the appearance of a rough spiral with cuboidal surfaces cut into the side of the building. The building features a pixelated ribbon that swirls around the exterior, peeling back its surface layer to expose an inner layer, creating balconies with views of the city.[9] The glass walls are divided horizontally and vertically, adding to the building's "pixelated" appearance. Its height surpassed that of the Baiyoke Tower II's record of 304 metres (997 ft) at the time of completion in 2016, making it the 88th tallest building in the world.[10]
Among the features of the building are: 10,000 square metres (110,000 sq ft) of retail space (MahaNakhon CUBE and MahaNakhon HILL Retail components); 209 residences serviced by Ritz-Carlton, which, with prices ranging from approximately 42 – 500 million baht (US$1.2 - 14m), are among the highest prices asked for Thai luxury real estate, freehold or leasehold in Bangkok; the Bangkok Edition boutique hotel, with 150 rooms, to be operated by Ritz-Carlton which is part of Marriott International in collaboration with boutique hotel creator Ian Schrager; as well as a rooftop bar and observation deck. MahaNakhon features Thailand's first L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon (Bangkok), Thailand's first restaurant by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, Thailand's first Vogue Lounge, and the largest Dean & DeLuca in Thailand.[11]
An outdoor plaza ("MahaNakhon Square"), will connect the tower to the Chong Nonsi station of the BTS Skytrain Silom Line and the Bangkok BRT station on Narathiwat Ratchanakharin Road.
In January 2013, PACE Development announced the sale of the highest-price condominium penthouse in Thailand at MahaNakhon, a two floor, 1,500-square-metre (16,000 sq ft) residence costing 480 million baht.[12]
PACE Development has marketed MahaNakhon overseas, including in the Middle East, the first time that a Thai property developer has marketed Thai property in the Middle East[13] as well as in Hong Kong and Singapore.

On Thursday, Aug. 30 WSDOT contractor crews from Granite Construction added a final sealant layer to this stretch of highway north of Lynden on SR 539/The Guide. Crews had already done pavement repair, crack sealing and applied a preservation surface of oil and gravel to this area. Next up - striping!

The digital landscapes in "Surface.Tension." series are attempts to explore conventions of representation. Specifically, they deal with the idea of "sublime" and its relation to the landscape, which quickly developed into a formalized way of composing a canvas and a formalized way of reading a composition. The overwhelming amount of data flowing through various digital networks (pointed to in this context by commercial advertisements) constitutes a new type of "sublime" experience. It is a dimension that is entirely human-made and it is pushing against a shell of any metaphor that we try encapsulate it in.
This is one of my favorite shots from a recent trip to the beach in South Carolina. I'm not sure if the swimmer is really surfacing (as it appears) or just getting smacked by a wave, but it turned out really well with the forground splash and the focused action at the crest of the wave.

Assignment:
One of the tougher lighting challenges in photography is dealing with shiny metallic surfaces. The reflective properties of polished metal can play tricks with exposure and make for challenging compositions. There should be many items around the house to use for subjects (cutlery, chromed items, jewelry, etc.). This assignment is based on a chapter in an often-recommended book titled Light-Science & Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting.
WIT: I found this assignment to be a challenge. Took about 40 shots using various settings. Used white foam cork board as well as several white poster boards to surround the grater in order to keep colors from being reflected in the grater. The dark area at the top of the grater may be a reflection of the camera, but I am not sure. Could not eliminate it. Used two clamp lights with reflectors for the lighting. So, I am submitting this image - against my better judgment - as I'm not sure it was successful. Not sure whether the goal was to avoid a bright reflection coming off the object??

This photograph was taken during a photography trip to Guadalupe Island in Mexico. Guadalupe Island is a white shark hot spot and in my opinion the number 1 location for observing/ photographing great white shark behavior. The gin like water is so clear that it allowed me to experiment with photographing underwater using only natural light. These photos were taken using a combination of surface and submersible cages that were lowered to 10 meters.
