Spinel lherzolite (wet, cut surface; 5.8 cm across at its widest) - a Neoproterozoic-aged mantle xenolith in Pleistocene basalt from Mt. Leura, Victoria, Australia. The lava & enclosed xenolith were erupted about 22 thousand years ago.
----------------
Here’s a sample of mantle rock. This spinel lherzolite is a xenolith nodule in basalt lava that was erupted from the Mt. Leura Volcano in Victoria, Australia. The rock was plucked from deep wall rocks during the ascent of basaltic magma during the Late Pleistocene. Published research on xenoliths from this locality indicates they are from the lithospheric mantle (below the Moho & above the asthenosphere). The spinel lherzolite itself is a variety of peridotite, an ultramafic, intrusive igneous rock. It has greenish forsterite olivine, blackish pyroxene, and dark spinel.
Locality & geology - Mt. Leura Complex, a maar/tuff-ring volcano in the Newer Volcanics Province (a Jurassic to Quaternary magmatic province in southeastern Australia having intermittent, low-volume eruptive activity), eastern side of town of Camperdown, southwestern Victoria, southeastern Australia.
Age - spinel lherzolite xenolith is Neoproterozoic in age; the surrounding basalt lava is late Late Pleistocene in age (22 k.y.).

A male mayfly is shedding its skin on the surface of the river - they are exposed to birds and fish during the process. / Egy hím szubimágó a vízben alakul át vedléssel párzóképes imágóvá. A vedlés folyamata során az állat röpképtelen, így teljesen ki van szolgáltatva a rovarevő madaraknak, halaknak.
After so many years, we saw the blooming of the Tisza river - the hatching of mayflies that only lasts a few evenings each year. I took my family for this natural wonder to Martely, Hungary.
Palingenia longicauda is an aquatic insect in the order Ephemeroptera. It is known as the Tisa or Tisza mayfly after the European Tisza river where it is found and also as the long-tailed mayfly and giant mayfly since it is the largest mayfly species in Europe, measuring 12 cm (5 in) from head to tail. Large numbers of P. longicauda larvae will usually hatch and mature during a week in mid June; this natural phenomenon is known as the 'blooming of the Tisza' or 'Tisza blooming' and is a tourist attraction. Adults hatch two times in a short period of time. After hatching the adults only have a few hours to mate before they die. Consequently groups of males will frantically try to mate with a female. Females will fly 1–3 km before laying their eggs on the river, which then sink to the bottom and hatch after about 45 days. The larvae develop in the mud for as long as three years before hatching. Larvae live in tunnels in the mud at a density of 400 tunnels per square metre.
Vobster Quay looking positively tropical. 11˚C at the surface and 8˚C at 12m. Had to jump into the water as it has been so long since my last dive. No Perch or Trout to be seen.

Three whales sighted together five miles off Ponte Vedra, FL on January 1, 2013. Researchers observed the group rolling and splashing at the surface, a type of behavior referred to as a Surface Active Group. Two of the whales are juveniles and the other is a female that may be pregnant. From left to right, the whales pictured are Catalog #3611, #3320 and the 2010 calf of #1145.

This photograph was taken during a photography trip to Guadalupe Island in Mexico. Guadalupe Island is a white shark hot spot and in my opinion the number 1 location for observing/ photographing great white shark behavior. The gin like water is so clear that it allowed me to experiment with photographing underwater using only natural light. These photos were taken using a combination of surface and submersible cages that were lowered to 10 meters.

The digital landscapes in "Surface.Tension." series are attempts to explore conventions of representation. Specifically, they deal with the idea of "sublime" and its relation to the landscape, which quickly developed into a formalized way of composing a canvas and a formalized way of reading a composition. The overwhelming amount of data flowing through various digital networks (pointed to in this context by commercial advertisements) constitutes a new type of "sublime" experience. It is a dimension that is entirely human-made and it is pushing against a shell of any metaphor that we try encapsulate it in.

My inbox show warnings from the national weather service, one for the ongoing flood and another for fire conditions. Sounds contradictory and not a little apocalyptic. But at least it's sunny.

This composite image of hands holding a tablet was shot by Ideum for the EM Spectrum interactive exhibit.

For the exhibit, we developed custom software that allows visitors to view both terrestrial and celestial objects across different wavelengths. The exhibit runs on Ideum Pano ultrawide touch tables.
ideum.com/products/touch-tables/pano-49
Both the Pano and the software are available for purchase from Ideum.
All of the content was developed specifically for the application. Ideum conducted a multispectral photoshoot for terrestrial objects and helped collect the latest celestial images. We worked with Science World in Vancouver to find appropriate images for the exhibit and collaborated on the content and text descriptions.
