Coluber constrictor will often commandeer rodent burrows, where they will lay their eggs. These nests may be under boards and other objects with notable surface area. This nest was found under a large metal trash lid along the edge of a field.

One of two maritime structures built by the North Western Railway at Morecambe, Stone Jetty is today an integral part of the local coastal protection works. The single storey building on the end of the jetty was an early railway station.

Stone Jetty can be found on Morecambe's Promenade, opposite the later Midland Hotel, and was originally built for the 'Little' North Western Railway Company as a wharf and rail terminal for both passenger and cargo transport. Richard Smallman (1816-1873) was the railway's engineer from April 1851 to March 1858.

An earlier wooden pier, also constructed by the railway company, once stood just east of Stone Jetty. Both had rail lines on them. The wooden pier dated from 1850 was was constructed under the railway's then engineer, John Watson. It has since been demolished.

The wall of Stone Jetty are vertical and constructed of closely-fitting sandstone blocks. The walls reach 10m above the sand at the seaward end. The overall length of the jetty is 250m. Its average width along the neck is 25m and at the head, 40m, where there is a small lighthouse of similar stone construction, and the former station, now a tearoom.

Chambers were incorporated into the body of the jetty to enable it to be used for loading and unloading at various states of the tide — which at Morecambe has a high range of over 10m, with the possibility of extreme storm surges of 2-3m.

A stretch of the western face of the jetty, some 180m long, is protected by rock armour. This was replenished after storm damage in 1988. During the late 1990s, the surface of the deck was re-laid in patterned coloured concrete and new seating, lamp standards and railings installed.

The digital landscapes in "Surface.Tension." series are attempts to explore conventions of representation. Specifically, they deal with the idea of "sublime" and its relation to the landscape, which quickly developed into a formalized way of composing a canvas and a formalized way of reading a composition. The overwhelming amount of data flowing through various digital networks (pointed to in this context by commercial advertisements) constitutes a new type of "sublime" experience. It is a dimension that is entirely human-made and it is pushing against a shell of any metaphor that we try encapsulate it in.

How is Solid Surface Made?

A solid surface is a synthetic stone resin material consisting of hydrate alumina, acrylic, epoxy, or polyester resin, and pigments. The material of the solid surface was cured and heated to 60°C or more. The cured stone resin material is cut into sheets or mold and polished on one or both sides according to the brand used. Sometimes the material was heated to 160°C and cooled to improve its heat resistance.

Solid Surface Vs Quartz Vs Granite

For many homeowners, solid surface, quartz and granite is able to offer a look and feel they prefer compared to the more natural options. They own some common features, but also have many differences as follows.

Solid Surface Vs Quartz Vs Granite

Appearance

Solid surface products are with a matte-like look, while quartz has a lustrous, deep, three-dimensional look, and granite is with a lustrous, rich, and crystalline appearance.

Visibility of Seams

Solid surface with stone resin material has the least visible seams of all products because seaming caulk is perfectly keyed to the solid surface material. But the seams of quartz and granite are visible although a good installer can hide them well.

Cost and Expense

The solid surface products own the most cost-effective expense compared to the other two products.

This is one of my favorite shots from a recent trip to the beach in South Carolina. I'm not sure if the swimmer is really surfacing (as it appears) or just getting smacked by a wave, but it turned out really well with the forground splash and the focused action at the crest of the wave.

The desk surface was stripped and sanded. The black edge panels were removed, sanded, and spray-painted black. The paper guard was removed and sanded to remove cuts. All wood surfaces received several coats of varnish before the entire thing was reassembled.

PCA 141 - Metallic Surfaces

Date: Jan. 23 - Feb. 6, 2011

Image Tag: pca 141

Assignment:

One of the tougher lighting challenges in photography is dealing with shiny metallic surfaces. The reflective properties of polished metal can play tricks with exposure and make for challenging compositions. There should be many items around the house to use for subjects (cutlery, chromed items, jewelry, etc.). This assignment is based on a chapter in an often-recommended book titled Light-Science & Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting.

WIT: I found this assignment to be a challenge. Took about 40 shots using various settings. Used white foam cork board as well as several white poster boards to surround the grater in order to keep colors from being reflected in the grater. The dark area at the top of the grater may be a reflection of the camera, but I am not sure. Could not eliminate it. Used two clamp lights with reflectors for the lighting. So, I am submitting this image - against my better judgment - as I'm not sure it was successful. Not sure whether the goal was to avoid a bright reflection coming off the object??

This photograph was taken during a photography trip to Guadalupe Island in Mexico. Guadalupe Island is a white shark hot spot and in my opinion the number 1 location for observing/ photographing great white shark behavior. The gin like water is so clear that it allowed me to experiment with photographing underwater using only natural light. These photos were taken using a combination of surface and submersible cages that were lowered to 10 meters.

The kit and its assembly:

This fictional high-altitude Hawker Tempest variant was inspired by leftover wing tip extensions from an AZ Models Spitfire kit. I remembered that the late Spitfire variants had a modified wing shape, much like the Tempest’s oval shape, and from this the idea to transplant these tips was born.

The rest of the modifications of the Matchbox kit at the core of the build were logical steps - and I must say that the Matchbox Tempest is not a bad kit. It goes together really well, and while the recessed surface details are somewhat soft, the overall impression is good to me.

For a high-altitude variant I added a leftover five blade propeller from a Pioneer 2 Hawker Sea Fury that was modified with a styrene tube adapter to match the OOB MK. II’s Centaurus engine. A radiator from a Macchi C.205V was added for the intercooler, and a small compressor’s air intake was added in front of the cockpit. The bulges for the compressors and their respective plumbings in front of the cockpit are curved pieces of sprue material - simple, but effective.

Under the wings the post-war attachment points for missile launch rails were PSRed away and the pitot, originally an L-shaped device under the left wing, was relocated to the leading edge – similar to the tropicalized export Tempests. The slipper tanks come from a Hobby Boss MiG-15, but they had to be PSRed to match the Tempest’s very different wing shape. I found that they’d look more elegant than the original drop tanks.

Inside of the cockpit I added a dashboard and a small gunsight behind the windscreen (the canopy had been cut into two pieces for open display) , scratched from styrene sheet – I could not live with the void in front of the pilot, and anything is probably better than nothing in this case, since the Matchbox kit only offers a seat (and a pilot figure, though), but no dashboard, floor or side panels. The kit comes, however, with nice oxygen flasks behind the seat. Weird.
