Fordingbridge designed and built this 120sqm sustainable flexible nursery building for Surestart.
Fordingbridge specialise in creating practical, energy and cost effective buildings which are intrinsically sustainable and are available at an affordable price.
Our buildings can be adapted to suit a wide variety of uses, from single school classroom buildings for nursery, primary and secondary education to large retail buildings and visitor centres.
We use a tried and tested building construction system using pre made elements which are then assembled on site. This minimises construction time and limits disruption to you and your project.
The building has an Integral canopy which provides an all-weather shaded play area and creates protection from solar gain.
The frame is a curved sustainably sourced FSC accredited Glulam timber-frame and Thermowood timber cladding provides an attractive finish.
The building is constructed with low maintenance highly insulated composite walls and roof to reduce heat loss from the building.

This is a photograph of a small part of the Canary Wharf financial district on the Isle of Dogs, London. This was taken from Marsh Wall and features the familiar Canary Wharf towers in the distant background. The square building in the middle is 20 Bank Street, home to Morgan Stanley.
This scene is about to disappear (2015) as the lake has been drained, the small building to the left has been demolished and a new building is being erected where the lake once was.

A great day for Roxy, but a sad day for the nursery. Snowberry Nursery is a Surestart nursery, purpose built and wonderfully equipped with great staff, but due to underfunding it is due to close next week. Elsie went there in 2010 when the family moved to the area. It is sad to see how the government's austerity and cuts have affected so many aspects of our lives.
New to Bristol Omnibus, but latterly with MTL, Leyland National TTC533T was purchased by Wigan Council for use as a 'Sure Start' bus.
Former South Yorksire PTE Dennis Dominator NKU165X appears to have a new lease of life at Workington's Northside Speedway Training Track.
I'm not exactly sure of its role but I suspect that it will serve as some sort of viewing platform.
Although its registration plates have been removed identification is made easy by the retention of its "Octobus" livery from its previous job with Surestart's Howgill Playgroup.
It had latterly spent several months in a Workington scrapyard.
The training track has suffered from much vandalism of late, not helped by its relatively remote location.
There is currently some damage to the perimeter fencing.
The Old School House, now the Community
Rooms and home of Staveley Neighbourhood
Management, was designed by Sir Joseph
Paxton around 1840, who was not only gardener
to the 6th Duke of Devonshire, but he also
designed Crystal Palace in London for the Great
Exhibition of 1851. The serpent above the
porch is part of the crest of the Dukes of
Devonshire. The teacher would have lived in
the central octagonal part of the building.

Climbing the switchback is Optare Excel X309CBT. A Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council owned vehicle, it was until fairly recently in use as a playbus. The Borough Council, which unusually in these times directly operates some bus services, has thoroughly refurbished it to modern pcv standards and it now runs on 'local link' services. Thanks to Matthew for pointing me in the right direction to identify this bus.
Child wristbands have been donated to SureStart nurseries in Openshaw to help parents keep their children safe.
PCSO Ian Farr received a £200 donation from Greggs Bakery North West in order to buy the wristbands. The bands act like a security strap with one end going around the toddler’s wrist and the other end around the parent’s wrist to stop toddlers wandering off and getting lost.
A total of 200 wristbands will be shared out between four SureStart nurseries in the Openshaw area of Bradford as they have supported the scheme.
PCSO Ian Farr from the Bradford Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are always concerned about the safety of babies and young children and will always keep an eye out for youngsters while out on patrol of the area.
"This is a simple idea that could stop a child from running out into the road or getting lost.”

Baby Basics Belfast, a project established by Connor’s North Belfast Centre of Mission in 2017, has earned a Royal seal of approval, thanks to an initiative launched on August 4 by The Duchess of Cambridge.
Baby Basics Belfast, located at Connect Base, Shankill Road, Belfast, is one of two Baby Basics in Connor Diocese – the other is run by the Parish of Ballynure and Ballyeaston in Ballyclare.
They are among a growing number of baby banks across the UK. Baby banks aim to support and empower families by ensuring every child has the essential items they need to thrive. In the UK, they are powered primarily by volunteers and typically run on professional referral from services such as health visitors, midwives and social workers.
Inspired by the work of these charities, The Duchess of Cambridge has brought together 19 British Brands to donate items to baby banks across the UK. This initiative was announced on August 4 when Her Royal Highness visited a baby bank in South Yorkshire to help unload a pallet of deliveries and sort donations, before speaking with families about their experience of baby banks.
Baby Basics Belfast is part of the North Belfast Centre of Mission, a joint project between Church Army and Connor Diocese. The project provides a pack of essential items for families in crisis. These are packed in a Moses basket, a baby bath, or a laundry basket, depending on the needs of the family.
The agencies who use the service are varied, and include charities working with families, homeless people and refugees; the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust; and SureStart Centres.
Donations come from churches and individuals across Greater Belfast and Connor Diocese, with knitwear donated by church craft groups.
Church Army Evangelist Karen Webb, from the North Belfast Centre of Mission, said she was delighted that initiatives like Baby Basics Belfast have been given the Royal seal of approval by The Duchess of Cambridge.
“During the Covid-19 crisis, we have seen an increase in the need to support families with babies and toddlers, especially with nappies and wipes,” Karen said.
“We are very grateful to Belfast City Council who gave us a weekly grant which kept the Baby Basics’ centre stocked with toiletries and nappies when churches were not able to gather and donate items as they had been doing before lockdown.
“Currently, we are averaging 24 packs a month going out to families with young children, all packed and prepared by volunteers. The help we receive because of the Duchess of Cambridge’s interest in the work of Baby Banks will allow us to continue supporting the most vulnerable in our community.”
Earlier this year, the Duchess of Cambridge helped pack essential bundles for vulnerable children at Baby Basics West Norfolk, and she has spearheaded a drive for donation of items for babies and toddlers from brands and high street retailers.
Speaking as she announced the sponsorship of items by 19 UK companies, the Duchess said: “Over recent months, I have heard from families who have been supported by baby banks through the most difficult of times and I have been deeply moved by their stories. Having somewhere to turn to for support is important for all families, and baby banks work every day, up and down the country, to provide immediate, tangible and practical help for parents and carers when they are most in need.
“Baby banks are driven by incredible volunteers, demonstrating the power of community spirit in supporting families and coming together to raise the next generation. Thanks to the generosity of the companies taking part in this initiative, baby banks across the UK will be able to support even more families through this particularly challenging time.”
Cat Ross, CEO of Baby Basics UK, said: “We are thrilled to be part of this amazing initiative from the Duchess of Cambridge. To have the opportunity to highlight the importance of Baby Banks and the amazing service that Baby Basics Centres across the UK provide.
“We haves never been more important than at this time when we are in the midst of a national crisis. So many more families in the UK will need support of a Baby Bank, some for the first time, and we are committed to doing all we can to support them in a way that restores dignity and values parents and their children.”

my son and daughter in law and their family live on those flats.
benefits?
"2 minutes" walk from town
close to frequent bus services. (on Washington Rd and London Road)
close to vibrant life that is London Road
varied and vibrant community,
good community spirit chools close by
convenient for both universities.
surestart very active in the area
doctors and schools nearby
waitrose almost opposite so very convenient
drawbacks
poor, typically boxy 1960's construction, so they don't look "fantastic"
can be noisy if your neighbours are inconsiderate
they have a "reputation" (not entirely deserved) of being "rough"
there are "worse" areas to live in. Go and have a look and get a feel of the area. I live a bit higher up the hill from them, and it's not that bad an area round here. I certainly have no qualms about being in this area.
