Tajuk best untuk breastfeed(bf) mommies, hehehe...
After 3 days I gave birth to Rafiqh, my breasts produced milk well. During the confinement, I had no problem at all, the breastmilk(bm) was more than enough, alhamdulillah... I think all mommies are same, masa ni susu melimpah2... After the confinement, I bought breastpump, kononnya nak pam bm dan buat stok, senang nak bawa keluar jalan2. Yer laa, mama Rafiqh ni banyak baju one-piece yang sangat susah nak selak kalau nak bf-ing kat luar. I used the pump only twice, hahaha. Why? Sebab sakit, lepas tu susu tak banyak pun keluar... After I asked mommies yang rajin pam2 ni, ooo baru laa tahu, memang sakit awal2 tu, kena pam selalu supaya breasts get use dengan pam, lama2 nanti ok laa. Tapi, sayangnya I dah malas nak teruskan. Lagi senang direct bf-ing jer. Kalau nak outing, bf-ing siap2, for 2-3hours, Rafiqh boleh tahan. Or else, nursing in car, easy! Even nursing cover pun tak ada, I use shawl with reben only... Then I bought tunic blouses banyak2...
Futhermore, bila I check for how long expressed breastmilk(ebm) boleh tahan selepas dipanaskan, only for few hours, hmmm, baik laa tak payah, I bukan ada cooler bag or ice-box yada2 yang lengkap untuk bawa ebm bila nak outing, pulak tu satu hal pulak nak panaskan bila baby nak minum, payah aih. Nanti end up dengan direct bf-ing jugak. So, I put back all the breastpump stuff in the box, simpan dalam almari, hihi... Guna next time laa, adik Rafiqh maybe?! Jangan rosak sudah. Karang membazir je beli ratus2. Tu laa, degil sangat, my mom dah kata jangan beli, gatal nak beli jugak, haa hambik kau!
Botol susu pulak ada banyak, I bought 2 only. Tapi dapat hadiah 4 lagi. Selama ni pakai 1 jer, untuk isi air zam2. I keluarkan dan guna 2, lain2 simpan!
Eh lari topik pulak, nak cerita pasal milk supply, melalut merata2 perginya...
Haa, lepas beberapa bulan, kegawatan susu pun dialami... Masa pregnant, pernah baca tentang milkmaid tea, teh yang boleh membantu meningkatkan penghasilan susu... Memang terfikir nak beli masa kat Malaysia tapi sebab susah nak jumpa kat Ipoh, tak beli... Disebabkan tak pernah pam betul2, tak tahu laa, berapa banyak susu terhasil dalam satu masa, tapi we can feel either we have the milk or not. We can feel breasts full or empty! Pernah jugak I rasa macam no milk, macam baby hisap kosong. Gelabah woo... Masa tu cepat2 cari petua, hehe.. Setakat ni, beberapa petua yang dah dicuba, I dah tahu apa nak buat kalau rasa susu kurang...
Ni cara I nak increase milk supply bila tiba2 rasa risau susu kurang:
- makan lobak putih, I makan mentah, buat salad, mix with apple and dressing
- minum susu soya
- masak bubur + halba
Ni pulak cara I maintain milk supply:
- minum air kosong banyak2
- supplement (multivitamin + calcium) intake
- minum susu
- makan makanan tenusu
- balance diet (orang kata makan buah+sayur banyak2, susu akan manis. Pernah rasa susu ibu? MANIS. Tak macam fm, yucks! Serius, I tak tipu, I pernah rasa. Patut laa Rafiqh refused air masak dll, pandai baby mama)
- enough rest
- no stress (erkk?! duduk rumah pun stress ker? eh, stress jugak laa, hahaha)
- mandi air suam
- massage breasts
- doa, minta dari Allah... Dia yang bagi kan? so minta laa dari-Nya. I minta sejak baby masih dalam rahim lagi...
Apapun, yang paling utama, baby kena kerap hisap supaya breasts stimulate susu dengan baik...
Sebenarnya banyak lagi cara yang boleh dipraktikkan untuk maintain/increase milk supply. Since I'm new-mommy, setakat tu je laa yang I dah buat. Untuk bf, even though it's human's natural process, still there is a price you need to pay. Kena ada usaha, kena ada iltizam, baru boleh berjaya, insyaAllah... Set your target and work hard for it, gambare
Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England. It is located approximately 3 miles (5 kilometres) south-west of Ripon in North Yorkshire, near to the village of Aldfield. Founded in 1132, the abbey operated for 407 years becoming one of the wealthiest monasteries in England until its dissolution in 1539 under the order of Henry VIII.
The abbey is a Grade I listed building owned by the National Trust and part of the designated Studley Royal Park including the Ruins of Fountains Abbey UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Foundation
After a dispute and riot in 1132 at the Benedictine house of St Mary's Abbey, in York, 13 monks were expelled (among them Saint Robert of Newminster) and, after unsuccessful attempts to form a new monastery were taken under the protection of Thurstan, Archbishop of York. He provided them with land in the valley of the River Skell, a tributary of the Ure. The enclosed valley had all the natural features needed for the creation of a monastery, providing shelter from the weather, stone and timber for building, and a supply of running water. After enduring a harsh winter in 1133, the monks applied to join the Cistercian order which since the end of the previous century was a fast-growing reform movement that by the beginning of the 13th century was to have over 500 houses. So it was that in 1135, Fountains became the second Cistercian house in northern England, after Rievaulx. The Fountains monks became subject to Clairvaux Abbey, in Burgundy which was under the rule of St Bernard. Under the guidance of Geoffrey of Ainai, a monk sent from Clairvaux, the group learned how to celebrate the seven Canonical Hours according to Cistercian usage and were shown how to construct wooden buildings in accordance with Cistercian practice.
Consolidation
After Henry Murdac was elected abbot in 1143, the small stone church and timber claustral buildings were replaced. Within three years, an aisled nave had been added to the stone church, and the first permanent claustral buildings built in stone and roofed in tile had been completed.
In 1146 an angry mob, annoyed at Murdac for his role in opposing the election of William FitzHerbert as archbishop of York, attacked the abbey and burnt down all but the church and some surrounding buildings. The community recovered swiftly from the attack and founded four daughter houses. Henry Murdac resigned as abbot in 1147 upon becoming the Archbishop of York and was replaced first by Maurice, Abbot of Rievaulx then, on the resignation of Maurice, by Thorald. Thorald was forced by Henry Murdac to resign after two years in office. The next abbot, Richard, held the post until his death in 1170 and restored the abbey's stability and prosperity. In 20 years as abbot, he supervised a huge building programme which involved completing repairs to the damaged church and building more accommodation for the increasing number of recruits. Only the chapter house was completed before he died and the work was ably continued by his successor, Robert of Pipewell, under whose rule the abbey gained a reputation for caring for the needy.
The next abbot was William, who presided over the abbey from 1180 to 1190 and he was succeeded by Ralph Haget, who had entered Fountains at the age of 30 as a novice, after pursuing a military career. During the European famine of 1194 Haget ordered the construction of shelters in the vicinity of the abbey and provided daily food rations to the poor enhancing the abbey's reputation for caring for the poor and attracting more grants from wealthy benefactors.
In the first half of the 13th century Fountains increased in reputation and prosperity under the next three abbots, John of York (1203–1211), John of Hessle (1211–1220) and John of Kent (1220–1247). They were burdened with an inordinate amount of administrative duties and increasing demands for money in taxation and levies but managed to complete another massive expansion of the abbey's buildings. This included enlarging the church and building an infirmary.
Difficulties
In the second half of the 13th century the abbey was in more straitened circumstances. It was presided over by eleven abbots, and became financially unstable largely due to forward selling its wool crop, and the abbey was criticised for its dire material and physical state when it was visited by Archbishop John le Romeyn in 1294. The run of disasters that befell the community continued into the early 14th century when northern England was invaded by the Scots and there were further demands for taxes. The culmination of these misfortunes was the Black Death of 1348–1349. The loss of manpower and income due to the ravages of the plague was almost ruinous.
A further complication arose as a result of the Papal Schism of 1378–1409. Fountains Abbey along with other English Cistercian houses was told to break off any contact with the mother house of Citeaux, which supported a rival pope. This resulted in the abbots forming their own chapter to rule the order in England and consequently they became increasingly involved in internecine politics. In 1410, following the death of Abbot Burley of Fountains, the community was riven by several years of turmoil over the election of his successor. Contending candidates John Ripon, Abbot of Meaux, and Roger Frank, a monk of Fountains were locked in conflict until 1415 when Ripon was finally appointed, ruling until his death in 1434. Under abbots John Greenwell (1442–1471), Thomas Swinton (1471–8), John Darnton (1478–95), who undertook some much needed restoration of the fabric of the abbey, including notable work on the church, and Marmaduke Huby (1495–1526) Fountains regained stability and prosperity.
At Abbot Huby's death he was succeeded by William Thirsk who was accused by the royal commissioners of immorality and inadequacy and was dismissed as abbot. He was replaced by Marmaduke Bradley, a monk of the abbey who had reported Thirsk's supposed offences, testified against him and offered the authorities six hundred marks for the post of abbot. In 1539 it was Bradley who surrendered the abbey when its seizure was ordered under Henry VIII at the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The abbey precinct covered 70 acres (28 ha) surrounded by an 11-foot (3.4 m) wall built in the 13th century, some parts of which are visible to the south and west of the abbey. The area consists of three concentric zones cut by the River Skell flowing from west to east across the site. The church and claustral buildings stand at the centre of the precinct north of the Skell, the inner court containing the domestic buildings stretches down to the river and the outer court housing the industrial and agricultural buildings lies on the river's south bank. The early abbey buildings were added to and altered over time, causing deviations from the strict Cistercian type. Outside the walls were the abbey's granges.[citation needed]
The original abbey church was built of wood and "was probably" two stories high; it was, however, quickly replaced in stone. The church was damaged in the attack on the abbey in 1146 and was rebuilt, in a larger scale, on the same site. Building work was completed c.1170.[11] This structure, completed around 1170, was 300 ft (91 m) long and had 11 bays in the side aisles. A lantern tower was added at the crossing of the church in the late 12th century. The presbytery at the eastern end of the church was much altered in the 13th century. The church's greatly lengthened choir, commenced by Abbot John of York, 1203–11, and carried on by his successor terminates, like that of Durham Cathedral, in an eastern transept, the work of Abbot John of Kent, 1220–47. The 160-foot-tall (49 m) tower, which was added not long before the dissolution, by Abbot Huby, 1494–1526, is in an unusual position at the northern end of the north transept and bears Huby's motto 'Soli Deo Honor et Gloria'. The sacristry adjoined the south transept.
The cloister, which had arcading of black marble from Nidderdale and white sandstone, is in the centre of the precinct and to the south of the church. The three-aisled chapter-house and parlour open from the eastern walk of the cloister and the refectory, with the kitchen and buttery attached, are at right angles to its southern walk. Parallel with the western walk is an immense vaulted substructure serving as cellars and store-rooms, which supported the dormitory of the conversi (lay brothers) above. This building extended across the river and at its south-west corner were the latrines, built above the swiftly flowing stream. The monks' dormitory was in its usual position above the chapter-house, to the south of the transept. Peculiarities of this arrangement include the position of the kitchen, between the refectory and calefactory, and of the infirmary above the river to the west, adjoining the guest-houses.
The abbot's house, one of the largest in all of England,is located to the east of the latrine block, where portions of it are suspended on arches over the River Skell. It was built in the mid-twelfth century as a modest single-storey structure, then, from the fourteenth century, underwent extensive expansion and remodelling to end up in the 16th century as a grand dwelling with fine bay windows and grand fireplaces. The great hall was an expansive room 52 by 21 metres (171 by 69 ft).
Among other apartments, for the designation of which see the ground-plan, was a domestic oratory or chapel,
1/2-by-23-foot (14 by 7 m), and a kitchen, 50-by-38-foot (15 by 12 m)
Medieval monasteries were sustained by landed estates that were given to them as endowments and from which they derived an income from rents. They were the gifts of the founder and subsequent patrons, but some were purchased from cash revenues. At the outset, the Cistercian order rejected gifts of mills and rents, churches with tithes and feudal manors as they did not accord with their belief in monastic purity, because they involved contact with laymen. When Archbishop Thurstan founded the abbey he gave the community 260 acres (110 ha) of land at Sutton north of the abbey and 200 acres (81 ha) at Herleshowe to provide support while the abbey became established. In the early years the abbey struggled to maintain itself because further gifts were not forthcoming and Thurstan could not help further because the lands he administered were not his own, but part of the diocesan estate. After a few years of impoverished struggle to establish the abbey, the monks were joined by Hugh, a former dean of York Minster, a rich man who brought a considerable fortune as well as furniture and books to start the library.
By 1135 the monks had acquired only another 260 acres (110 ha) at Cayton, given by Eustace fitzJohn of Knaresborough "for the building of the abbey". Shortly after the fire of 1146, the monks had established granges at Sutton, Cayton, Cowton Moor, Warsill, Dacre and Aldburgh all within 6 mi (10 km) of Fountains. In the 1140s the water mill was built on the abbey site making it possible for the grain from the granges to be brought to the abbey for milling.Tannery waste from this time has been excavated on the site.
Further estates were assembled in two phases, between 1140 and 1160 then 1174 and 1175, from piecemeal acquisitions of land. Some of the lands were grants from benefactors but others were purchased from gifts of money to the abbey. Roger de Mowbray granted vast areas of Nidderdale and William de Percy and his tenants granted substantial estates in Craven which included Malham Moor and the fishery in Malham Tarn. After 1203 the abbots consolidated the abbey's lands by renting out more distant areas that the monks could not easily farm themselves, and exchanging and purchasing lands that complemented their existing estates. Fountains' holdings both in Yorkshire and beyond had reached their maximum extent by 1265, when they were an efficient and very profitable estate. Their estates were linked in a network of individual granges which provided staging posts to the most distant ones. They had urban properties in York, Yarm, Grimsby, Scarborough and Boston from which to conduct export and market trading and their other commercial interests included mining, quarrying, iron-smelting, fishing and milling.
The Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 was a factor that led to a downturn in the prosperity of the abbey in the early fourteenth century. Areas of the north of England as far south as York were looted by the Scots. Then the number of lay-brothers being recruited to the order reduced considerably. The abbey chose to take advantage of the relaxation of the edict on leasing property that had been enacted by the General Chapter of the order in 1208 and leased some of their properties. Others were staffed by hired labour and remained in hand under the supervision of bailiffs. In 1535 Fountains had an interest in 138 vills and the total taxable income of the Fountains estate was £1,115, making it the richest Cistercian monastery in England.
After the Dissolution
The Gresham family crest
The Abbey buildings and over 500 acres (200 ha) of land were sold by the Crown, on 1 October 1540, to Sir Richard Gresham, at the time a Member of Parliament and former Lord Mayor of London, the father of Sir Thomas Gresham. It was Richard Gresham who had supplied Cardinal Wolsey with the tapestries for his new house of Hampton Court and who paid for the Cardinal's funeral.
Gresham sold some of the fabric of the site, stone, timber, lead, as building materials to help to defray the cost of purchase. The site was acquired in 1597 by Sir Stephen Proctor, who used stone from the monastic complex to build Fountains Hall. Between 1627 and 1767 the estate was owned by the Messenger family who sold it to William Aislaby who was responsible for combining it with the Studley Royal Estate.

Becoming a World Heritage Site
The archaeological excavation of the site was begun under the supervision of John Richard Walbran, a Ripon antiquary who, in 1846, had published a paper On the Necessity of clearing out the Conventual Church of Fountains. In 1966 the Abbey was placed in the guardianship of the Department of the Environment and the estate was purchased by the West Riding County Council who transferred ownership to the North Yorkshire County Council in 1974. The National Trust bought the 674-acre (273 ha) Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal estate from North Yorkshire County Council in 1983. In 1986 the parkland in which the abbey is situated and the abbey was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was recognised for fulfilling the criteria of being a masterpiece of human creative genius, and an outstanding example of a type of building or architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates significant stages in human history. Fountains Abbey is owned by the National Trust and maintained by English Heritage. The trust owns Studley Royal Park, Fountains Hall, to which there is partial public access, and St Mary's Church, designed by William Burges and built around 1873, all of which are significant features of the World Heritage Site.
The Porter's Lodge, which was once the gatehouse to the abbey, houses a modern exhibition area with displays about the history of Fountains Abbey and how the monks lived.
In January 2010, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal became two of the first National Trust properties to be included in Google Street View, using the Google Trike.
Film location
Fountains Abbey was used as a film location by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark for their single "Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc)" during the cold winter of December 1981. In 1980, Hollywood also came to the site to film the final scenes to the film Omen III: The Final Conflict.Other productions filmed on location at the abbey are the films Life at the Top, The Secret Garden, The History Boys, TV series Flambards, A History of Britain, Terry Jones' Medieval Lives, Cathedral, Antiques Roadshow and the game show Treasure Hunt. The BBC Television series 'Gunpowder' (2017) used Fountains Abbey as a location.

Demel is one of the most famous Viennese pastry at the carbon (cabbage) market (Kohlmarkt) 14 in the first Viennese district Innere Stadt. Demel was a k.u.k. Hofzuckerbäcker and runs this item today in public.
History
1778 came the of Wurttemberg stemming confectioner Ludwig Dehne to Vienna. 1786, he founded his pastry shop at the place of St. Michael. Dehne died in 1799 of tuberculosis. His widow then married the confectioner Gottlieb Wohlfahrt. In 1813 they bought the house in St. Michael's Square 14. Despite numerous innovations such as frozen the company's finances could not be rehabilitated. After the death of Gottlieb Wohlfahrt in 1826 the widow and her son from her first marriage August Dehne succeeded but the economic boom. August Dehne managed to great wealth, he invested in land. As the son of August Dehne struck another career as a lawyer, Dehne sold the confectionery in 1857 to his first mate Christoph Demel.
Demel also had success in the continuation of the company and established it to a Viennese institution. After the death of Christoph Demel in 1867 his sons Joseph and Charles took over the business, which is why it since "Christoph Demel 's Söhne" means. On request Demel received 1874 the Hoflieferantentitel (the titel as purveyor to the court). The proximity to the Imperial Palace directly opposite made business more profitable. The Hofburg borrowed from Demel occasionally staff and tableware for special occasions such as proms and parties. Recent developments in the art of confectionery were brought from Paris. Trained at Demel, professionals quickly found employment.
1888 Old Burgtheater was demolished at Michael's place and transformed the place. Demel had to move out of the house and he moved to the Kohlmarkt 14. The new store inside was equipped inside with high costs by purveyor to the court Portois & Fix. The interior is decorated in the style of Neo-Rococo with mahogany wood and mirrors. Regulars were members of the Viennese court as Empress Elisabeth, and other prominent members of the Vienna society of the time, the actress Katharina Schratt and Princess Pauline von Metternich. A peculiarity of Demel from the time of the monarchy is that the always female attendance, which originally was recruited from monastic students, is dressed in a black costume with a white apron. They are called Demelinerinnen and address the guest traditionally in a special "Demel German", which is a polite form of the third person plural, omitting the personal salutation and with questions such as "elected Have you?" or "want to eat?" was known.
After the death of Joseph and Carl Demel took over Carl's widow Maria in 1891 the management. She also received the k.u.k. Hoflieferantentitel. From 1911 to 1917 led Carl Demel (junior) the business and then his sister Anna Demel (4 March 1872 in Vienna - November 8, 1956 ibid ; born Siding). Under her leadership, the boxes and packaging were developed by the Wiener Werkstätte. Josef Hoffmann established in 1932 because of a contract the connection of the artist Friedrich Ludwig Berzeviczy-Pallavicini to Anna Demel. The design of the shop windows at that time was an important means of expression of the shops and there were discussions to whether they should be called visual or storefront (Seh- or Schaufenster - display window or look window). While under the Sehfenster (shop window) an informative presentation of goods was understood, the goods should be enhanced by staging the showcase. From 1933 until his emigration in 1938 took over Berzeviczy-Pallavicini the window dressing of Demel and married in 1936 Klara Demel, the adopted niece of Anna Demel.
During the Nazi regime in Austria the confectioner Demel got privileges from the district leadership because of its reputation. Baldur von Schirach and his wife took the confectioner under their personal protection, there were special allocations of gastronomic specialties from abroad in order to continue to survive. But while the two sat in the guest room and consumed cakes, provided the Demelinerinnen in a hallway between the kitchen and toilet political persecutws, so-called U-Boats. Those here were also hearing illegal radio stations and they discussed the latest news.
1952 Anna Demel was the first woman after the war to be awarded the title Kommerzialrat. She died in 1956. Klara Demel took over the management of the bakery. Berzeviczy-Pallavicini, who lived in the United States until then returned to Vienna. After Clara's death on 19 April 1965, he carried on the pastry. During his time at Demel he established the tradition to make from showpieces of the sugar and chocolate craft extravagant neo-baroque productions. Baron Berzeviczy sold the business in 1972 for economic reasons to the concealed appearing Udo Proksch, who established in 1973 in the first floor rooms for the Club 45; also Defence Minister Karl Lütgendorf had his own salon. After Proksch was arrested in 1989 in connection with the Lucona scandal, he sold Demel to the non-industry German entrepreneur Günter Wichmann. 1993 it came to insolvency. Raiffeisen Bank Vienna as principal creditor, acquired the property in 1994 from the bankrupt company to initially continue itself the traditional Viennese company through a subsidiary. In the process of the renovation in March 1995 on the fourth floor were mura painting from the 18th century exposed and the baroque courtyard covered by a glass construction which since the re-opening on 18 April 1996 can be used as Schanigarten (pavement café) or conservatory.
In 2002 the catering company Do & Co took over the Demel. The company was awarded with the "Golden Coffee Bean " of Jacobs coffee in 1999. Demel now has additional locations in Salzburg and New York.

One of the most famous specialty of the house is " Demel's Sachertorte" . The world-famous Sachertorte was invented by Franz Sacher, but completed only in its today known form by his son Eduard Sacher while training in Demel. After a 1938 out of court enclosed process occurred after the Second World War a till 1965 during dispute between Demel and the Sacher Hotel: The hotel insisted on its naming rights, Demel, however, could pointing out already since the invention of the "Original Sacher" called pie "having used the denomination". Demel had after the death of Anna Sacher in 1930, under defined conditions, the generation and distribution rights for "Eduard-Sacher-Torte" received. The dispute was settled in favor of the Hotel Sacher and the Demelsche cake is today, "Demel 's Sachertorte" and is still made by hand. While a layer of apricot jam under the chocolate icing and another in the center of the cake can be found in the "Original Sacher-Torte", is in "Demel 's Sachertorte " the layer in the middle omitted.
Besides the Sachertorte helped another specialty the pastry to world fame: the original gingerbread figures whose modeling came from the collection of Count Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek on Castle Kreuzenstein. Then there are the Demel cake (almond-orange mass with blackcurrant jam, marzipan and chocolate coating), Anna Torte, Dobos cake, cake trays, Russian Punch Cake, Esterházy cake, apple strudel and other confectionary specialties. Popular with many tourists are the candied violets with which Demel earlier supplied the imperial court and they allegedly have been the Lieblingsnaschereien (favorite candies) of Empress Elisabeth ("Sisi"). Rooms in the upper floors as the Pictures Room, Gold Room and the Silver rooms are rented for events. In addition to the pastry shop Demel operates, as it did at the time of the monarchy, a catering service, after the re-opening in 1996 as well as storage, shipping and packaging was desettled in the 22nd District of Vienna. Demel is also responsible for the catering at Niki Aviation.

As we were making our way to the In-N-Out for our second attempt, we saw this In-N-Out worker making her escape. I've heard that when it comes to fast food chains, In-N-Out treats its workers pretty well, and the pay is a lot better than what's typical for, say, a McDonald's. In my anecdotal observation, that's translated to well-run restaurants with limited delays and high-quality food. But even the best-run restaurant is going to have trouble handling 14-hour lines in the drive-thru. This young woman has seen some stuff.
Which makes this a good place to drop in a discussion of the labor shortage.
If you pay attention to the news or buy food from a restaurant, you probably know about the labor shortage. This is a lingering effect of the Covid lock-downs and shut-outs, as while all the pent-up demand has tried to push the economy into overdrive, businesses have been slow to fill all the employee positions that got emptied when everything shut down. This has been most visible with restaurant jobs, although you can also see it in grocery stores and retail stores and in the extra time it takes the Amazon wish fulfillment center to fulfill your wishes. It actually runs all the way up the labor food chain; I think of it as "tickle-up economics."
People who are prone to panic over inflation cite this as one of the big reasons to panic right now. Conservative types -- who are in FULL PANIC mode at the moment because they don't have to deflect from Trump's incompetence and can shift the blame for everything to President Biden -- initially blamed all this on the Covid relief unemployment benefits for people knocked out of work because of the shut downs. They say, why would a fast food employee go back to work when the government gives them free money? And so, in response, a few months ago a bunch of Republican governors shut down the Federal emergency unemployment benefits in their states several months early, thinking this would force people back into McDonald's and Wal-Mart and take care of the labor shortage. And the outcome of that plan is that the labor shortage was affected not one iota. I can say from observation, there are plenty of fast food dining rooms closed because of labor problems in Conservative states like Kansas and Nebraska and Missouri.
So "nobody wants to work because of free money" obviously doesn't explain the labor shortage. Then what does?
I think the explanation, at least with the lower levels of the economy represented by restaurant and retail workers, owes to three significant factors. Some of these are long-term trends that have been simmering in the background for at least a little while, which the Pandemic has brought to a full boil. Others are momentary things that will work themselves out eventually, but it will take time.
They are:
1. Covid Deaths. Americans have shown a remarkable ability to ignore this factor, but so far Covid-19 has claimed the lives of 746,000 people. According to the Department of Labor, the total number of workers in the U.S. labor market numbered around 157 million in 2019. So just the number of Covid dead is equivalent to about half a percent of the labor force, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Considering that Covid deaths tended to be higher among people with low-wage service industry jobs, the effect in restaurants and chain stores is amplified.
And you can add on top of that the number of people who suffered long-term debilitation as a result of Covid. Studies are still refining these numbers, but statistics from the CDC suggest that about 8% of people infected with Covid suffer long-term symptoms that make work difficult or impossible as much as a year after infection. We've reported 46 million Covid infections in the U.S. Eight percent of that translates to 3.68 million people, or another 2.3% of the labor market.
2. Reduced Immigration. One significant source of new entry-level workers into the labor market is legal immigration, and legal immigration had been significantly reduced over the three years immediately preceding the Pandemic. According to the State Department, the Trump Administration reduced legal immigration into the United States by about two-thirds. You can see the effect of that decrease in the number of green cards the government issues to foreign nationals allowing them to work in the United States. In 2016, the last year of President Obama's administration, the government issued 599,744 green cards. In 2019, the last full year before the Pandemic, Trump's government issued only 461,589 green cards. That's a drop of 23%. Or expressed another way, 138,155 workers, or about a tenth of a percent of the entire labor force. And once the Pandemic hit in 2020, the number of green cards issued went off a cliff. In May of 2020, the government issued only 697 green cards, when the previous year they'd been averaging 38,500 green cards a month.
All this translates to about 700,000 missing workers, roughly equal to the number of people who have died. And why does this matter? Because in order to function, a capitalist economy like that of the United States needs constant growth. As workers advance into better-paying positions, the economy needs new workers to take their place. These 700,000 missing immigrant workers would have served as those replacements. Instead, those jobs stay empty.
Falling Birth Rates: This one is a long-term issue that's visible in the fast food industry today, but will work its way up the labor market over time, especially if the trend of reduced immigration continues. Birth rates in the United States have been trending downward for a long time, but they began a precipitous fall in the early 1990s. When my oldest children were born in 1992, there were 15.49 births per thousand people in the total population. In 2005, the year today's 16-year-olds were born, there were only 13.95 births per thousand people. That's a reduction of almost 10%. And that 10% reduction means that there are 10% fewer 16-year-olds out there to take entry-level jobs at the McDonald's or the In-N-Out than there were when my kids turned 16 in 2008. (My kids entered the workforce with jobs at a Target.)
You can expect this issue to grow more significant with time, as birth rate started plunging even more steeply in 2008 -- you can guess an obvious cause for that one -- and has continued a steep decline to the present moment. As of November of 2021, we're at 12.001 births per thousand people. We're not even meeting the replacement for the natural death rate. Add in the unnatural death rate thanks to Covid, and the problem only grows worse. And this trend isn't likely to reverse anytime soon, as the Millennials and front wave Generation-Z kids are increasingly resistant to the idea of having children of their own. Why? The most commonly cited reason is economic insecurity and stagnant wages.
Conclusions
There are other factors than these exacerbating the labor shortage. One effect of the Pandemic is that the price of child care has increased dramatically, for instance, making it less economically viable for both parents in two-parent households to work. In America, this translates into a much slower rate of post-Pandemic re-entry into the workforce for women than for men. Or there's the fact that tipped servers in restaurants are still paid only $2.13 per hour, which is what I made when I worked as a server in 1992. That's not much incentive to draw people back to work.
The fact is that a lot of these unfilled entry-level jobs are low-wage crap work people only take when they can't do anything else, and a lot of the people who held these jobs before the Pandemic were forced to find other options when the service industry shut down. The Conservative stance has always been that these were never meant to be living-wage career jobs, and that those who didn't like them should find something better. Well, they did, only now there's not nearly so many people waiting in line to replace them. We've constrained the labor pool in a number of ways over the past several years, not just through a Pandemic. Labor supply is low while demand is high. Simple, capitalist economics suggests the only way to address this is by raising wages.
(Or you could help un-constrain supply by opening up immigration ... but nobody wants to talk about that.)

During the First World War, there were over 2,700 War Hospital Supply Depots throughout Britain and Ireland. These depots were staffed by female volunteers whose output consisted mainly of sphagnum moss dressings and bandages, for use in hospitals and at the front. Not long after war had broken out in 1914, cotton wool had become almost unobtainable and so volunteer teams would collect sphagnum moss from wherever it could be found in sufficient quantities, this moss was then sterilised and dried before being used to make the wound dressings. Sphagnum moss was used for its excellent absorbent properties.
The Mayoress War Hospital Supply Depot at Orwell Park in Ipswich was set up by Lady Beatrice Adine Pretyman (née Bridgeman) 1870-1952, Wife of the Hon. Ernest George Pretyman; daughter of 4th Earl of Bradford.

This is the main entrance to the Water filtration plant in Bengaluru, India. At an altitude of just over 3000 feet (~920m), this location is the highest point in the city and a logical location for the water plant.
In the past, these gates would be open and people could walk in at will and take a look around. But in today's world, the gate is kept locked and security is tight. In fact, the street leading up to this building, which I posted earlier (see below), has an outer fence and gate, with manned security.
Nikon D700 + Carl Zeiss Makro Planar T* 2/100 ZF.2 @ f/2. In addition to focusing on the building at f/2, I should have also taken a shot at f/5.6 too, focusing on the dog, and I would have caught both the building and the gate in good focus!

New pics from an old kit.
While snooping around for picture material I recently found a reliable model kit source in Japan and was pleased to find that the Gunze Sangyo kits from the Dorvack OAV had been re-issued in 2007 by Aoshima, including kits/sets with added weaponry and new Hyper Dorvack kits. Since I LOVE the Dorvack PA's, I ordered a bunch of them, and this is now the first of MANY Dorvack PA's that I have in store... more to come soon! ;)
This Nove Commander PA suit is in original OAV equipment and livery. The kit itself is easy to assemble, but (still) shares the flaws that were designed into it 25 years ago. Main problem are the legs, which make assembly and painting very difficult, and while the parts are molded very well, making them fit needs putty and creativity.
This specific PA-36 was built right out of the box. Only enhancements are opened air intakes for the jet pack on both shoulders (instead of just painting them black), a modified air hose on the right shoulder (the original molded part was seperated in 3 pieces and covered in paper tissue, to give it a flexible and "insulated" look), an antenna on the left shoulder and a transparent lens in the laser's nozzle, which had been painted in neon pink from the back.
Additionally, the laser's power supply hoses were added manually. Since the references indicate that these 3 cables actually lead into the air intake on the left shoulder(?), I decided to add extra connections on both weapon and PA hull that would house them.
As mentioned above, the livery is original OAV. I wanted to build an "original", but still "realistic" model, so I built a fusion of the bright OAV colors with a weathered look from military duty.
The choice of basic colors was tricky, since I only had the assembly/paint guide, few reference pictures and no Gunze Sangyo colors.
After consulting the paint guide and considering many different red tones, ranging from a deep burgundy through wine red to bright red, I finally settled on a tone called Insignia Red (FS 31136, actually Humbrol 153). Even though it is still a bright and light color, this red has little yellow, so that it appears on larger areas a bit dull - I did not want a fire engine!
What appears white is actually a very light grey tone (RAL 7035, Humbrol 196). Pure white would have definitively been too bright, and the painting guide actually claims that it was a mixed color of a bluish grey with white (?).
The upper legs were painted in Pale Grey (Humbrol 40), a grey tone that has little blue hue, and the joints were painted in Aluminium Metallic (Humbrol 56). The visor was laid out with silver and covered with transparent deep blue translucent paint.
After a wash with black ink and some dry painting with shades of the basic colors, the whole kit received a matte finish - except for the joints and the upper legs, which were coated with semi-matte varnish.
The decals are original, and, in contrast to the Gunze Sangyo decals of former times, the new Aoshima material can actually be used! Only problem (on any PA) is the spheric surface on the knees, where the plain decals can hardly be applied at all. Here, decal softener and delicate knife cuts helped - but you can still recognize folds... :(
Finally, the PA kit was carefully weathered with silver and received some dirt and dust weathering with acryllic paint in sienna brown, black and ochre. In real life, the kit looks more weathered than on the pictures here. The light for the photograph makes it look brighter than it is in real life.
The diorama I used for the pictures is a 1:35 scale base that I built for a Gasaraki armor - which still waits to be started with... The pictures themselves were taken with a simple Kodak CX 7330 digital pocket camera.
