Bugg-Shash is an obscure Great Old One, and this is V2.0 of this home-made game supplement.
This enemy was developed with a quick and demanding game in mind, and for a smaller group of investigators.
Therefore, this Great Old One was designed not to be too strong, but put up constant threats that put good pressure on players through its potentially quick awakening.
Additionally, Bugg-Shash should allow investigators to prepare themselves for the final battle, esp. with some monster trophies - otherwise, things can become ugly and end quickly!
Being a solitary creature that is only summoned by sorcerers or madmen, the monster cup was slightly altered by taking all cultists and high priest out of the game. The remaining monsters with affinity to Bugg-Shash were toughened to reflect their dedication and desperate situation to unleash this being onto Arkham.
Since Bugg-Shash has the ability to animate the dead, I wanted to add a mechanism that keeps the players on the edge and busy.
I decided that zombies were to act a bit like spawn monsters, but with a twist that fundamentally influences the game against Bugg-Shash.
The special rule to put zombies back on Bugg-Shash's card after defeating and spending them (instead of placing them into the monster cup as usual) is part of the fun. The zombies also still count against the monster limit (unlike spawn monsters) and can cause a bit of trouble in the long run.
Through a rising terror level, the limited stock of zombies are more and more likely to come into play. Since the stock of 3 is not big, the zombies pose a constant indirect threat: killed zombies are claimed by the investigators, but at that moment they are taken out of the game. They must then be spent quickly to fill up Bugg-Shash's card stock again. If the stock ever becomes empty, the Great Old One is likely to awaken VERY quickly through the additional doom markers that are placed on the track, and the effect might cascade if the stock remains empty.
To cope with the threat, investigators also better quickly find/save some allies to prevent Bugg-Shash from snatching them (through the rising Terror Level or discarding them by themselves) and sending them back as zombies into town. They also come in handy as "fodder" for the final battle - having some allies as well as monster trophies will help the investigators considerably if Bugg-Shash awakens.
To make the final battle with Bugg-Shash more playable, I decided to allow monster trophies to be used as "bait", primarily in order to save investigators from being devoured too quickly. As a compensation, monster trophies are without effect on Bugg-Shash's hunger and combat power. Bugg-Shash is a hunter and killer, and only 'the real thing' will sate its hunger!
Even though the -5 toughness appears pretty high at first for such a weak Great Old One, it declines with the number of victims Bugg-Shash takes. It can drop quickly if the investigators prepared themselves well for this confrontation.
As a more flexible alternative and for larger investigator groups, I considered to set Bugg-Shash's toughness to 2+(number of players), but setting it on a fixed number appeared easier to handle.
Another twist comes with the optional Epic Battle cards. One runs in favor of the investigators, weakening Bugg-Shash's defences for one round.
The other two have more serious effects. One of them resembles the normal attack, but is focussed on monster trophies. And the attack is in so far more severe, as investigators have to keep at least one monster trophy at the end of the round, or be devoured - they need TWO monster trophies to actually survive this attack!
The last Plot Card changes Bugg-Shash's power (to its favor, of course) and allows it to regenerate through the investigator victims it claims during the final battle.

The Glen Waverley Library opened on Monday 15th March 1976. Part the Camberwell-Waverley Regional Library Service, the library was seen as “supplementing” the service provided by the Mount Waverley branch for Waverley City residents. The initial stock included about 35,000 books, managed by “a total regular staff of fifteen under the charge of Branch Librarian, Mr. Tim Bruwer (sic).” Its opening hours were 11am to 9pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 9.30am to noon on Saturdays. Waverley’s Town Clerk, Mr Colin Bock, said the building and furnishings cost about $650,000. With “book stock and other incidentals” the cost was set at $750,000. (2) Both the opening date and costs were a far cry from earlier estimates. In 1972 Cr Peter Davies (Chairman of the Camberwell-Waverley Regional Library Committee) proposed a March 1974 opening date and estimated the cost would to be about $300,000. (3) Waverley Council accepted a building tender of $478,849 in August 1974. (4) Delays in decision making had occurred at a time of rising inflation, leading to the blow outs.
In 1972 Cr Davies noted that the “Mount Waverley branch is designed for 35,000 to 40,000 persons” and that the “Glen Waverley library should be capable of serving 50,000 persons.” It was reported that a future Wheelers Hill branch would serve a similar population to Mount Waverley, ultimately giving facilities for 130,000 people. A special tribute was given at the the library's official opening in April 1976. Mayor Cr Brian Perry thanked the late chief librarian of the Camberwell-Waverley Regional Library Service, Mr Tom Woodrow, for his "great depth of vision." (5)

Villa Tugendhat is a historical building in the wealthy neighbourhood of Černá Pole in Brno, Czech Republic. It is one of the pioneering prototypes of modern architecture in Europe, and was designed by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Built of reinforced concrete between 1928–1930 for Fritz Tugendhat and his wife Greta, the villa soon became an icon of modernism.
THE HOUSING PHILOSOPHY
CAN THE TUGENDHAT VILLA BE LIVED IN?
This provocative question was voiced by the art historian Justus Bier. This was a reaction to an article on the new structure of the Brno Villa in the magazine 'Die Form' which was published in the year 1931 by the publisher himself Walter Riezler. The commissioners themselves entered into the polemic on the theme as to whether “the Tugendhat Villa can be lived in” with their reactions supplemented with a text by the architect Ludwig Hilberseimer. The Tugendhats rejected the view that the monumental, impassioned living space would only allow for a kind of ceremonial or showpiece housing, and in contrast expressed their complete satisfaction with its variable character. The unforced domestic calm also radiates from the family photographs by Fritz Tugendhat who was a photo enthusiast and amateur filmmaker.
From the philosophical perspective the Tugendhat Villa particularly reflects the influence of the German Catholic Modern movement. The American art historian Barry Bergdoll as well as the Czech art historian Rostislav Švácha have pointed out in this connection the ideas of the philosopher Romano Guardini, one of the most significant figures of German Christian Personalism. Mies had met with Guardini and his ideas had additionally influenced Grete Tugendhat. “Large spaces provide freedom. Space has a completely special calm in its rhythm which cannot be provided by a closed room.” The snaps by Fritz Tugendhat are genuine personal interpretation of space in contrast with the 'official' photographs of the architecture. “When I allow these spaces and everything which is inside them to influence me as whole, I clearly feel: what beauty is, what is truth.” The Tugendhats apparently knew Guardini’s views or at least discussed them with Mies. Guardini’s works, which came about at the same time as the design of the Villa, state that a well-built internal space has levels which lead into depths. This is precisely the manner in which one enters downward into the space of Tugendhat Villa the intimate character of which is protected by the stern street section of the house.
Art historical theories and interpretations of not only Tugendhat Villa but Mies’ work in general will continue to stimulate generations of art historians and architecture theoreticians. Up until now almost all of them have agreed that the essence of the Brno realization was the arrangement of the main living space and its connection up with the external outdoors. One of the starting points was undoubtedly the ideas of F. L. Wright and his “open plan” which at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries removed the four walls demarcating the rooms allowing for the emergence of a continual space with a connection to the exterior of the structure. Mies van der Rohe himself did not write anything about the Brno Villa, but he did discuss the conception in detail with his educated clients.
This country’s leading, and by coincidence also from Brno, art historians view “the loose” and “the open” space of the house as analogical to the architecture of the Middle Ages and the Baroque. Václav Richter compared Mies’ space conception with Santini’s radical Baroque space in the pilgrimage church on Zelená hora near Žďár nad Sázavou. Richter’s student Zdeněk Kudělka has made reference to the Neo-Gothic aspects of this space which is enhanced by a cross-like connected profile of steel supporting columns and the mirror-like gloss of its chrome cladding. These interpretations coincide with Richter’s remarkable periodization of the history of “the open” architectural space which was in his view only fulfilled in the Gothic, in the radical Baroque and in the skeleton architecture of the 20th century.
Mies’ student Philip Johnson and after him the Swiss architecture historian Sigfried Giedion have interpreted the interior of the Brno Villa as “a flowing” space whose “flow” is only gently channelled by the lines of the onyx and the Macassar inner wall in harmony with the regular rhythm of the supporting columns and the carefully placed furniture.
The period Czechoslovak specialised journals ostentatiously ignored Mies' realization in Brno. The only positive evaluation of the building in the domestic press came from the exclusive society magazine Měsíc (Month) which presented the Villa as one of the crowning expressions of contemporary aesthetic and technical maturity. The negative attitude by Czech specialised circles would thus seem to foreshadow the painful future of both the Villa and its inhabitants.
