Campeau Corporation unveiled plans to Kanata City Council and residents for developing Town Centre lands. The proposal was for 929 houses in the southwest quadrant of Town Centre development lands, bordered by Katimavik Drive, the Queensway, Castlefrank Drive, and Terry Fox Drive. The plans called for a density of 15-18 units per acre. Jo-Anne Trounce wrote that the major concern about the plan for the residents was the “complete lack of facilities” within the proposed area. Kanata City Council named City Clerk Brian Switzer as the new City Administrator. This move was part of many recommendations of an Accountability Study conducted by consultant Ward Mallette. The controversial position of Coordinator was renamed and expanded in the announcement. Kanata City Council rejected a plea for tighter gun control in rural March from the March Rural Association. The Ontario Municipal Board informed the City of Kanata that there would be new ward boundaries in time for the November elections. Kanata City Council had passed the boundary changes on March 12. A Standard editorial stated: “The change in the ward system seems small at the outset, but it represents a shift in power, however slight, which could swing important votes in the future. Alderman Niebergall announced in a Kanata City Council meeting that a referendum should be held to decide what type of indoor pool the citizens want. He had recently outlined in his Katimavik-Hazeldean Report the progress of the indoor pool issue and the Indoor Pool Project Management Committee. A Consultant had been hired to analyze their options in the Committees findings, and his report was due in July. Niebergall said that if the city can hold a referendum on something like nuclear disarmament, then residents could also decide on something more in their control, like what type of pool to build. Kanata City Council turned down in a tied vote a proposal to swap its building lots in Belleview Heights for Campeau Corporation lots on Decarlo Gardens in Katimavik-Hazeldean. The deal would have cost the City $200,000. The plan was put forth by Alderman Niebergall, aimed to supplement gains already made to Hewitt Park, and he argued that the decision that was made would “reduce the spectrum of uses for the park.” In his Katimavik-Hazeldean Report, Niebergall explained that Campeau proposed a 20-lot subdivision on the four-acre parcel, which would result in the complete loss of the woods on the site “which is the best in Katimavik/Hazeldean.” A park consultant and City staff had been against placing these lots within the park, since they would reduce the street frontage of much of the park. Alderman Des Adam, in his March Notebook, entered into a discussion on how he felt that Campeau Corporation hindered commercial development as the major landowner in Kanata. He stated: “I would propose that since Campeau Corporation is the major landowner in the Kanata North Industrial Park, the only vacant landowner in the Kanata Town Centre, and the principal landowner in Marchwood-Lakeside, that Kanata Council use its very considerable powers of persuasion to request that a percentage of Campeau’s industrial and commercial lands be made available for sale at market value as a condition precedent to the development of any of their residential holdings.” He continued a week later, saying that this was to ensure that industrial development kept up with residential building, otherwise there would be an increased tax burden on homeowners. The first of two public meetings held on the indoor pool issue was held. More than 60 residents attended. Many possible designs were presented, ranging from a standard rectangular pool to an elaborate leisure/wave pool. J. Birch wrote on the meeting in the Standard, and stated that the meeting was very informative. Mayor Wilkinson announced that the Ontario government would contribute $785,000 towards establishing the Kanata Enterprise Centre. As Ron Boyd explained in the Standard, the Centre was to provide supportive facilities for entrepreneurs and newly formed small businesses to be nursed in an attempt to increase the success rate of small business in Canada. Five Kanata residents were killed in an Air India crash. All four members of the Jain family lost their lives in the disaster while traveling to visit family. They were among the 329 people who died when the Air India Boeing 747 jumbo jet exploded over the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland. It was to refuel in London and continue to Bombay. Mastercraft Development Corporation’s request for an oversized sign on Teron Drive was turned down by Kanata City Council. It was to be 16 ft. high and 20 ft. wide, much larger than permitted in the City by-laws. Most of the signs are legitimate efforts by local businesses to attract customers. A brief ceremony was held to commemorate the official beginning of City policing by the OPP. The new service began on July 1 despite the fact that the contract between the City and the province had not yet been signed. Kanata City Council reversed a previous decision and agreed to give Campeau Corporation five lots in Belleview Heights rather than along Decarlo Gardens. This released the company’s obligation to develop Hewitt Park and Dorey Park. The deal cost the City approximately $350,000. There had been concern over building in a portion of Hewitt Park. Kanata City Council decided that there would not be a referendum on the indoor pool issue. Alderman Niebergall had originally suggested that a referendum be held to decide on various indoor pool proposals. Aldermen Niebergall, Adam, and McKee voted for the referendum. Kanata City Council heard tenders for the development of Walter Baker Park, which were all much higher than anticipated by Council. Kanata City Council approved a townhouse development at the corner of Lombardo Drive and Pickford Drive as long as the proposed number of unites was reduced. The representative from MacDonald Homes objected to this type of stipulation and argued that Council had no right to “control density” in such a way when he was operating with the limits of what the site was zoned for. Kanata City Council agreed to purchase 90.5 acres for $1.8 million in the Kanata South Industrial Park for a municipal industrial park. Much of the argument for the purchase centered on creating a better balance between residential and commercial sites as well as having more control over development. In his March Notebook, Des Adam stressed the need to reduce the tax burden for residents by developing a stronger commercial-industrial base. Adam also stated in a later Notebook: “It is a very large step forward for Kanata in enabling the City to attract new industry. Leslie Jones wrote an article in the Standard: 628 bylaws control community standards. The City of Kanata had 628 by-laws that could result in fines of up to $2,000 if violated. They ranged from noise issues, commercial ground maintenance, aesthetic infractions, etc. The most recent issue was the proposed above-ground pool by-law, which would prohibit above-ground pools in Katimavik-Hazeldean and Beaverbrook. On August 8, the Bridlewood Community Association at a Board of Directors Meeting decided not to support a ban on above-ground pools in Bridlewood. Kanata City Council decided that the seven-year old Town Centre Secondary Plan would be reviewed and updated. Jim Stewart later commented: “What must be remembered in this, however, is that the plan was intended to create a city centre--a downtown for a city with a projected population over 80,000. The question is whether this remains a realistic objective. If it is, then me must ensure that the secondary plan incorporates the features and amenities of a downtown which we can all be proud of. To take vitamins is to acknowledge that one's food does not provide all necessary nutrients. Given the bereft condition of most soils and the reduced varieties in types of food, I am inclined to agree. After hearing Julia Ross speak at the Weston Price conference I have followed her recommendations from her books The Diet Cure and The Mood Cure. She also speaks of weaning off supplements once your levels are good and your diet is improved by Weston Price type additions like liver. So does not have to be a lifelong dependency.
She also impressed me with her multi-vitamin recommendation formulated to balance blood sugar levels. Named "True Balance". The multivitamin is the basis of the regime. Next is Vitamin C an antioxidant and immune booster. Also takes care of toxins like nitrites used in curing bacon. Followed by B-50 for the family of Vitamin Bs that work as a coenzyme to improve body functions in digestion, energy and nervous functions. I was already taking Calcium and Vitamin D per my doctor's recommendations and Primrose Oil and niacin because my chiropractor did a muscle test asking what my body needed (per what he had on hand to test with). Julia Ross also recommended taking 5-HTP over melatonin for sleep issues because she said it was best to get serotonin levels up first and use melatonin as a last resort. And the glutamine was recommended by talk on diabetes.
My sleep patterns are changed for the better. I also feel calmer overall and less wired. Supplements are subtle. The advice is to increase dosage until you feel a difference.
I also read a more mainstream book that gives an overview of vitamins called The Real Vitamin & Mineral Book. This book very clearly explained what a vitamin is and does, but the authors still cling to the mainstream paradigm of a low-fat diet and fewer animal products. While the Weston Price people are not only fat friendly, but make a distinction that factory farmed animal inputs are what cause problems not the animal product themselves. So you get the best benefit from animals fed their species appropriate food without growth hormones and unnecessary antibiotics.
Vitamins and their uses are backed up by scientific studies of what is effective or not. Some practitioners have tried Vitamin C in megadoses for curing everything from cancer to lyme disease with good success, but because studies are more contentious when it comes to curing disease this is not considered mainstream.
Though vitamins can be found in good quantity in food and animal products, this is too difficult to study because of the many variables of factory farming vs organic and whatever unnatural inputs along the way. Scientists like vitamins because it is a known manufactured entity while holistic types feel vitamins are better delivered in their natural forms since we still don't understand all the interactions of micronutrients and the food they are found in. Thus I am piling on the eggs and organ meats.

Over two months on, the needs of many of the survivors remain desperately basic. There has been an increased incidence of pneumonia and associated fatalities. As well as helping with practical and medical requirements, the Japanese Red Cross Society are helping people deal with "Shell Shock" / Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and further developing services to address these issues.
Perhaps most impressively, they helped quickly set up a management structure to co-ordinate help from all the major fundraisers, a committee including academics and representatives from the 15 most badly affected prefectures [local governments]. The pre-existing local Red Cross chapters [branches] are helping with governance.
Although Japan has a large economy, and domestically the japanese have been hugely generous towards aid efforts, like everywhere else, many people of course are not personally rich. There is still epic upheaval. Much of welfare is normally provided by family and community, a system that breaks down when whole barrios are fragmented and diminished. Services like adoption and fostering, for example - normally always done by relatives - are having to be developed. A planning policy of building schools on higher ground saved many children, but even after encouraging teachers back out of retirement, there is still a shortage of experienced teachers. Japan is mostly mountains and sea, with very little spare land suitable for building, and so - while rebuilding takes place - temporary accommodation has had to be built on land normally reserved for other activities, for example on school playgrounds.

About the decorative hexagonal origami gift box
The box is made up from 12 square origami papers - 6 for the lid and 6 for the base. No cutting, glue or adhesive tape is used.
Although Japan has a long tradition of paper folding, the design of the box is modern, by Tomoko Fuse 布施 知子, who is a renown unit origami designer and artist. Unit origami is a method of building up models using pre-folded components or units.
If you are an accurate and consistent paper folder, but are new to unit origami, and you would like to make your own box, I would recommend her book "Origami Boxes: Moribana Style" [# ISBN-10: 0870408216 - # ISBN-13: 978-0870408212] as an excellent introduction. Connecting the units together can be a bit fiddly at first, and the book also includes designs for more simple square and triangular boxes, which give the opportunity to practice and develop the skills needed for doing the final assembly.
(Until Asimo gets a bit more nimble fingered, the box is unlikely to flood the market anytime soon...)

Paper making was a traditional supplemental business of farmers in Japan during the winter. The very cold water during that season enabled the fibres in the pulp to be soaked without becoming subject to decay, and some also argue that cold shrinks the fibres, creating a finer, crisper paper.

“Frolic and Do-Funny,” a supplemental reader from the Children’s Own Readers Series published by Ginn and Company. No date but probably from 1929 or 1936 with the rest of the series. Obviously illustrated by Marguerite Davis, though illustrator not credited.
To supplement the 6x9 camera normally used for landscape-type photography, I wanted a 35mm film camera that had a wide angle lens whilst being as small as possible. I'm not interested in anything that requires batteries to function; it should be all mechanical. I love my Rollei 35, which can be used perfectly well without its battery, but that has a 40mm lens and for the purpose I wanted something with shorter focal length.
FED-2 cameras, and the INDUSTAR-69 28mm f/2.8 lenses used on the half-frame Chaika, are quite plentiful to buy. Although both use the L39 screw mount, the lens-to-film plane distance on the Chaika is slightly shorter than on the full-frame 'Leica compatibles', so the lens helicoid travel has to be taken further back beyond the Infinity position of the Chaika. (Some people report that they have had to grind surfaces down to allow the necessary travel; in this case the tolerances just stacked up nicely so that this was not necessary.)
I did not grind down the lens focussing ring either, so it 'bottomed' and locked the lens to fixed focus; this is intentional as I don't need variable focus for landscape [or, in daylight, for almost anything, with f=28mm ;-) ]

A fascinating pasted in 'supplement' to a road atlas produced by Bartholomew for the British Transport Commission in 1959/60. The UK was quite late in constructing 'special' roads or motorways and by the late 1950s with the growth of road traffic and the constrictions of the old trunk road system linking the country often through town and city centres with limited bypasses, the need was seen as acute. Work started on the M6 in Lancashire and the M1 across the midland counties along with some smaller schemes that would in time become the basis for the current motorway network.
As the supplement notes the UK's 'first' motorway had been opened on 5th December 1958 this being the Preston By-pass that took the number M6. Then, on 2 November 1959, the first section of the M1 (the London - Birmingham Motorway) was opened by Ernest Marples, the Minister for Transport. The supplement then reproduces the complete relevant pages 28/29 of the atlas to show the updated route of the M1. The last page shows the southern section of the M1 and M10 spur, the opened section of the M6 and the other under construction schemes that would become the first section of the M4, M20, M50 and the Lancaster section of the M6.
This page shows the smaller sections that include; the M1/M10 spur now reclassified as part of the A414; the Ross Spur, the M50, that linked the steel works of South Wales with the Midlands car industry and that would in time link to the later M5; the Maidstone bypass that formed the first section of the M20; the Maidenhead bypass that would become the first section of the M4; the Lancaster bypass, the M6, and the open Preston bypass, again part of the M6.

Belvedere
Belvedere Castle. Garden Front of the Lower Belvedere.
Belvedere Palace stands supposedly on the foundations of a Roman camp that had been erected here for strategic reasons. In 1693 Prince Eugene of Savoy acquired field and vineyard grounds between today's Rennweg and today's Gürtel. In 1700 Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt began with the construction of a palace garden (Lower Belvedere), whose in French-style layed out park was equipped with large water basins, an orangery with precious foreign plants and a menagerie. Prince Eugene was a great animal lover, and some animals in his collection could be fed exclusively by himself.
1720 the Prince conceived the plan the summer palace to supplement by a another palace building on the hill of the garden.
The 1721 by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt begun works had been completed in 1724. The Upper Belvedere served in contrast to the Lower only representative purposes and was never meant to live.
The Prince and his architect managed a perfect symbiosis between architecture and garden. After the death of the Savoy (1736) inherited his niece Victoria of Savoy-Soisson, nee Princess Hildburghausen, all his possessions. From her the Habsburgs beginning of 1752 acquired the Belvedere. From 1755 Empress Maria Theresa moved the Arcierenleibgarde (Royal Company of the Archers) and the Galician Guard in the annex of the Belvedere. Besides, the castle stood almost empty.

1770 Belvedere Palace was venue of brilliant festivities:
In castle and park the marriage of Archduchess Maria Antonia (Marie Antoinette) with the Dauphin of France by proxy (per procura) was celebrated. About 2,000 people were invited, more than 1,500 bottles of champagne, which was far from home in Vienna at that time,
were emptied. For hospitality of the guests, there were round tables, which were covered with silver. However, the Court of Vienna had a large part of the silver service to rent of nobles, because the stocks of the silver chamber were not sufficient. Finished was the festival by a magnificent fireworks.
1776, the imperial picture gallery from the Stallburg (home of the famous Lipizzan stallions) was transferred to the Upper Belvedere, the animals of the menagerie came to Schönbrunn. Shortly before the Congress of Vienna in 1814 in the Lower Belvedere the Ambras Collection was exposed. During the war against Napoleon (1805-1809), much of the collection of paintings had to be outsourced. The Corsican claimed 400 masterpieces for himself, but which after his defeat at Waterloo to the Habsburgs have been restituted. The after the French wars completely neglected building has been restored 1850-1866.

1819 Emperor Franz II (I) the Institute of Botany, University of Vienna, had given spacious grounds for enlargement of the Botanical Garden at Rennweg. Franz was very interested in botany and in accordance with a Habsburg House bill - every Archduke must learn a civilian job - has been educated for gardener. In an adjoining garden of Schloß Belvedere he had from his private funds laid out a botanical garden ("Flora Austriaca") which was left to the Institute of Botany for use.
During the cholera epidemic of 1831, the Belvedere served as well as Schönbrunn Palace the imperial family as a refuge; supposedly one was there protected from the bad air, which was attributed to the onset of the disease. Both castles lay in the "countryside", the air was much better here than in the densely populated city. During wartime, a hospital was set up in the castle.
As the space for the imperial collections became too small, it was thought to expand the Upper Belvedere by wing buildings. This plan was dropped for aesthetic reasons, however. After the expansion of the city (razing of the bastions and glacis) arose on the ring road the newly created Court Museums; moved there in 1891 the major part of the paintings.

To 1893/94 it is likely that Archduke Franz Ferdinand has chosen the Upper Belvedere to his residence in Vienna. Other sources say that it had been assigned to him by the Emperor Franz Joseph as a place to stay in Vienna. The rooms have been restored, adapted for residential purposes and supplemented with neo-Baroque furniture. The heir of the Este collections furnished his residence with numerous works of art. He had envisaged the castle for the accommodation of his collections; in 1893 were numerous boxes from India and Singapore in Belvedere stored. 1894 Emperor Franz Joseph could see the collection: "Yesterday I went to the Belvedere, where Franzi showed me his now quite and very nicely prepared collections. The same are as imposing as interesting by the incredible amount of objects and by the rarity and beauty of them. I believe that this exhibition would be interesting for you", wrote the monarch to his wife, Empress Elisabeth. That same year, Archduke Franz Ferdinand showed his collections his future wife, Sophie Chotková,
"Where I unaware of your fatigue with particular brutality you dragged from box to box" as he apologetically from Budweis wrote to the Countess.
Then the collections moved one the one hand to the Palais Modena in the Beatrixgasse, on the other hand to Konopischt. Only in 1898, Franz Ferdinand was granted by Emperor Franz Joseph to move into the Belvedere as Vienna Residence. More revitalization works were carried out and were also necessary. Technical modernization and preservation of the original building condition had priority - as always with the projects of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. As furnishings served still preserved furnitures from Schloss Hof, which were supplemented by new ones in old style. The private rooms in addition to electric lighting were equipped with central heating.

If his presence was needed in Vienna, Franz Ferdinand here could lead a normal family life and escape the pressures of court ceremonial, in which the to him in morganatic marriage affiliated wife was exposed to the evils of the courtiers. When the heir to the throne invited guests to the Belvedere, he was sitting opposite his wife as a hostess while she was ranked in the Hofburg always after the latest unmarried Archduchess. About the cozy family life at Belvedere reported Prince von Clary-Aldringens:
"Aunt Sophie invited us ... to snack into a Belvedere, unexpectedly, suddenly appeared the Archduke - we literally froze in our Hab-Acht-position (stand at attention). He greeted us warmly ... [I got to know] the Archduke as a friendly landlord, who was playing and laughing with his Children..."
Between 1899 and 1914 in the Lower Belvedere the military bureau of the heir to the throne was housed. Other well-known Residents - but of outbuildings - were Anton Bruckner, who in 1896 died in the Kustodenwohnung (guardian house), and Richard Strauss, who lived here from 1925 to 1944.
After the assassination of the Archduke and his wife in Sarajevo, the Belvedere should serve as the residence of the new heir to the throne, Archduke Karl and his family.
