The Bibi-Khanym Mosque (Uzbek: Bibixonim masjidi; Persian: مسجد بی بی خانم; also variously spelled as Khanum, Khanom, Hanum, Hanim) is one of the most important monuments of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In the 15th century, it was one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. It is considered a masterpiece of the Timurid Renaissance. By the mid-20th century, only a grandiose ruin of it still survived, but major parts of the mosque were restored during the Soviet period.
After his Indian campaign in 1399, Timur (Tamerlane) decided to undertake the construction of a gigantic mosque in his new capital, Samarkand. When Timur returned from his military campaign in 1404 the mosque was almost completed. However, Timur was not happy with the progress of construction, and immediately had various changes made, especially on the main cupola.
From the beginning of the construction, problems of structural integrity of the structure revealed themselves. Various reconstructions and reinforcements were undertaken in order to save the mosque. However, after just a few years, the first bricks had begun to fall out of the huge dome over the mihrab. The scale of Timur's plans pushed the building techniques of the time to their limit, and the building's integrity was not helped by the rushed nature of its construction.
Timur named the mosque after his wife, Saray Mulk Khanum. However, the Bibi Khanym Mosque was actually commissioned by Saray Mulk Khanum herself.
In the late 16th century, the Abdullah Khan II (Abdollah Khan Ozbeg) (1533/4-1598), the last Shaybanid Dynasty Khan of Bukhara, cancelled all restoration works in Bibi-Khanym Mosque. After that, the mosque slowly deteriorated and became a ruins gnawed at by the wind, weather, and earthquakes. The inner arch of the portal construction finally collapsed in an earthquake in 1897. During the centuries the ruins were plundered by the inhabitants of Samarkand in search of building material, especially the brick of the masonry galleries along with the marble columns.
A first basic investigation into securing the ruins was made in Soviet times. Late in the 20th century, the Uzbek government began restoration of three dome buildings and the main portal. In 1974 the government of the then-Uzbek SSR began the complex reconstruction of the mosque. The decoration of domes and facades was extensively restored and supplemented. During these restorations, a band of inscriptions revealing Surat al-Baqarah of the Quran was added to the main sanctuary iwan of the mosque. As of 2016, work on the mosque restoration was ongoing.

Now.. who the hell is Zinnia? I.. don't have a clue.
Zinnia is a recolour of a third party Arcee product produced by Ocular Max. I don't know how popular their stuff is. I don't know what the expectations were quality wise. I just knew it was a "she", and off I went. I don't have a clue where the name came from, but her colour I believe is based on the Paradon Medic characters from Transformers mythos.
Third party figures, for the uninitiated, are not bootlegs, but are rather unofficial figures, made usually because Hasbro drops the ball somewhere. Zinnia is one of several MP scaled Arcee products out there.This being an exclusive ended up being $120 CAD.
Every company uses the general character idea, and tweaks things here and there. The vehicle mode is very reminiscent of the Arcee we G1ers know (and sometimes love.. at least before it got creepy with Daniel), though the windshield is a bit on the small side.

I also wish the actual upper chest/should combination locked into place, or at least held itself a bit more securely.
Oh, speaking of transformations, props out to Occular Max. Pictures are one thing, but the written blurbs help a lot as well... mind you much of this might be an issue for me simply because MP figures have Japanese instructions,but it's worth giving credit for.
The finished robot mode is pretty much bang on what is advertised on the illustrations. Zinna has an impressive array of articulation including double jointed knees and elbows, thigh, hip, ankle, toe, upper arm, shoulder, mid torso, neck, and head. Ankles are a bit different than what you could expect, with two separate swivel joints rather than one single ball joint. While a bit more secure, it does look a bit on the odd side. The knees have a certain range of movement within which its actually gripping and holding the leg in place - once beyond this it goes limp noodle as that is what is needed for the transformation.
Eagle eyed readers will note that the box indicates there is Die Cast metal in this figure. There isn't a lot, but for what it's worth the entire lower leg and feet are metal.
The only thing that gives it away that this is a third party figure is the finish on the product. Don't get me wrong. The QC on this figure is definitely tighter than most, if not all, of Hasbro/Takara mainline product. But you'll notice here and there some crude plastic finish, and the paint apps can be a bit on the weaker side.
Further enhancing your display options are the various optional parts Zinnia comes with. She has three expressions (neutral, crazy stalker girlfriend, Lara Croft) and four sets of hands total, one pair of which is dedicated to holding her twin pistols. She has, for reasons, two pairs of open palm hands with slightly different finger placements. I guess one of them is to supplement a single pistol pose?
Also, why does a medic pack so much heat? Beats me.
My personal favourite is the combo of crazy stalker girlfriend and the twin pistols. She looks so deranged that clearly this is the safest, most family friendly combination you can have on the figure, and will naturally create the fewest questions about your sanity and tastes.
I'd say overall, I'm quite impressed with this product. Being an exclusive, I imagine the MSRP on a mainline item might be what, $20 less or so? So for $100 CAD, it's a pretty solid MP style product. Will I go all out and get them all? Not likely - not all characters are worth MPing, and if I can resist them on the Takara side, these more expensive items can be easily resisted by me. But, it does give me a sense of what the even more expensive figures might be like.
In conclusion,I suppose now that I've got a taste of 3P flesh, it's only a matter of time before i strike again.

Whilst travelling I've taken to keeping my health supplements (apple cider vinegar and fish oils) in this little box, which I always keep in an easy to reach spot at the top of my bag. It's meant I've actually been able to keep the habit of taking daily supplements!
With their previous P3M design reaching the end of its service life and to supplement the shorter-ranged PBY Catalina, the Martin Company in 1937 proposed a twin-engined flying boat to the US Navy which would be larger and longer-ranged than the PBY. The Navy agreed, ordering a prototype XPBM-1 Mariner in June 1937, to be supplemented by at least 20 more PBM-1s if testing was successful.
To give the PBM a heavy payload, Martin designed an aircraft with a deep, slab-sided fuselage somewhat similar to Consolidated’s B-24 Liberator, using a gull wing to keep the engines out of water spray, with retractable wing floats similar to the PBY’s. Bombs were carried in the engine nacelles. Emphasis was given to crew comfort: since the PBMs would be undertaking long patrol missions, up to 12 hours long in some cases, crews were given bunks, heating, a refrigerator and a galley, a big improvement over the often-uncomfortable PBY. To ensure clean aerodynamics, it was designed with a twin tail. The design was revolutionary enough that Martin was worried about its performance, and a quarter-scale version, the Martin 162A Tadpole Clipper, was flown in December 1937. The concept was proven and the Navy duly ordered the Mariner placed into full production as the PBM-1 in the same month.
As the XPBM-1 began testing in February 1939, however, Martin found that the Mariner’s design did have trouble. The Tadpole Clipper had been single-engined, and so it had not experienced engine problems of the twin-engined Mariner, which suffered from both aerodynamic and hydrodynamic problems. The engines’ propensity for catching fire and then exploding was something the Mariner was never quite able to overcome, but Martin was able to cure the other problems by a slight hull redesign and canting the tailplane upwards, which in turn required the endplate tailfins to be canted inwards, giving the Mariner a unique appearance. The PBM-1 reached the fleet in September 1940. It was soon supplemented by the PBM-3 (the XPBM-2 being a failed experimental carrier-launched version), which added three feet to the fuselage to further improve handling, less complicated non-retracting wing floats, and radar in a fairing above the fuselage.
The early problems with the Mariner, not to mention its higher cost, likely ensured that it would never reached the same numbers or popularity as its rival, the Catalina. However, the Mariner was far more comfortable, and its easy handling endeared it to crews on long-haul missions, especially those who had flown the tempramental B-24. While the PBM-3 and PBM-5 series used powered turrets, the PBM-3C stripped these down for manual guns, to save weight for even further increased range.
PBMs would serve extensively in World War II, even before the United States formally entered the war: in early 1941, PBM-3s would participate in Neutrality Patrol missions in the western Atlantic, radioing positions of sighted U-boats to British Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy destroyers and corvettes. Once war was formally declared, PBMs began hunting U-boats themselves, sinking their first in June 1942. Mariners would only sink ten U-boats during the war, but this does not reflect how many German submarines they forced away from convoys or discouraged by their presence. Mariners were also used in the Pacific, though here they did more than hunt Japanese I-boats; they were used heavily in the search and rescue role, and as bombers attacking isolated Japanese garrisons bypassed by Allied forces.
If the Mariner was never produced in numbers or had the popularity of the PBY, it would last longer in service, being one of the few World War II-era designs to remain in US Navy service. PBM-5s would be used during the Korean War as patrol and SAR aircraft, and were used in Operation Highjump, the Navy’s Antarctic research project. Still others served as the backbone of US Coast Guard rescue units in the 1950s, and others were exported to Argentina, Australia, the Netherlands, and Uruguay, the latter being the last operator of the Mariner in 1964. By this time, the US Navy had also retired its aircraft, replacing them with the P2V Neptune and the P5M Marlin, Martin’s purpose-built successor to the Mariner. Of 1285 PBMs built, only one today survives at the Pima Air and Space Museum...
...and this is it. Built as Bureau Number 122071, this is a PBM-5A amphibian and one of the last Mariners to be built. It was delivered to VP-33 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia in 1948, but only remained in active service for two years. In 1950, it was transferred to the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland for initial crew training for cadets, then retired in 1953. Sold off as surplus in 1958, it was acquired by private owners until 1972. At that point, it was realized that 122071 was the only intact Mariner left anywhere, and it was purchased by the Smithsonian for eventual display at the Air and Space Museum. Very quickly, the aircraft was loaned to the Pima Air and Space Museum, where it could be restored and put on display; the NASM simply did not have the room.
For awhile, 122071 was displayed outside, but the precious nature of this aircraft meant that it was moved inside as soon as possible. It is kept in excellent condition, and wears the overall midnight blue scheme of late 1940s-early 1950s US Navy aircraft.
Dad had always been a fan of the Mariner, and knew a gentleman here in Montana who had flown them during World War II. It was fascinating to see the last one left.

Sarcochilus spathulatus. This specimen was raised under tissue culture conditions from seed pods generated by artificially pollinating cultivated plants grown in suburban Adelaide. Plants in flask were seen to have made flower spikes and buds in May 2012. The seedlings were deflasked in mid June on to Bunya Pine and callistemon branch mounts. All twelve seedlings have survived and those carrying racemes have all flowered and are making new roots. Plants have been raised in a glass house supplemented with humidity and cooling when needed by means of a pair of evaporative coolers – one on a timer and the other thermostatically activated at 32 deg C as backup. All watering and misting of mounted plants contains dilute fertilizer in rain water @ 300 to 450 ppm. All mounted plants are misted at least once a day to 3 or more times a day in mid summer. Plants are in about 70% shade until afternoon when they are in 50% shade until late October when extra shading to about 75% effective shade is applied. In mid to late March plants are moved to an annex that has 50% Laser Lite roofing and clear polycarbonate walls to maximize available light and winter warmth. Plants have happily endured 1 deg C night time minima. Sarcochilus spathulatus occurs naturally in Qld and NSW and though quite widespread it is generally uncommon. S spathulatus has been used in hybridizing and has some quite charming hybrid offspring. We hope that by producing such seedlings in tissue culture and then raising robust plants on mounts in artificial culture to become available for sale, that illegal collecting from the bush will be at least lessened.
