Silence of Sounds
A tapestry of colors
The end of a day
Yet a beginning of night
High in the mountains
And a valley below
Another national park visited
And yet so much more to explore.
Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one early evening at Crescent Rock Overlook in Shenandoah National Park. The view is looking to the southwest at a colorful display of lights, not long after sunset. My thought on composing the image was to focus on the lights and colors and then figure out angles with the nearby ridges and hillsides to add to the setting. I knew most of the nearby landscape to my front was in early twilight shadows, but figured I could bring out some of the details and colors later in post-production. My main focus was to not blow any of the highlights and capture those rich colors for this image. I used a new SIRUI monopod that I had recently purchased that helped maintain a more stable position and platform for the longer exposure I had as I was working and learning my new Nikon Z8 Mirrorless camera.
This scene could easily be situated in Valencia, at Café del Mar on Ibiza, Topshuis, Cádiz or Rabat. Fishermen hoping for a great last catch of the day. The sun turning the evening red and being as big as one would only see near the equator. The winds have died down, creating a sea so calm and gentle, that one would actually think it was a mirror or - since the Netherlands is currently frozen over – a giant ice floor. Although, the latter would do the earlier fisherman not much good. But that’s perhaps the romantic in me…
Technical stuff
A single shot photo. Take at F8.0, 30 seconds, +1 2/3 at 100 ISO. Although you know I’m a big fan of Aroura HDR 2018, I haven’t used this app this time. Its almost straight out of the camera. Post production was done with PS CC. It included colour toning (especially the saturation side of thinks. That was rather strong in the original), balancing the lighting of the fore- and background) and removing some chromatic aberration on the wind turbine. The latter I did by creating a composite or merged layer and blurring this layer with the Gaussian blur tool (set at 6.48). After that, I blended this layer with the original one using the colour option (it’s at the bottom of the pull down menu). To finish this procedure, I created an inverted mask in the blurred layer and used the brush tool to only remove the chromatic aberration. The latter is necessary due to the fact that this procedure influences the colour toning (it dulls it a little). Finally, I compensated this by ‘umph-ing’ the edges of the wind turbine a little for the masking step. (Any questions? Feel free to drop me a comment.)
Lastly, I added the copyright watermark. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

This is one of the very first photos I took with the Canon EOS 6D. The sky on Christmas Eve was great for photography.
The silhouetted man on the left was in the right spot for my compo. The photo I took afterwards I called "Silence is Golden".

I imagine that this is probably one of the best spots to capture a sunset from. No sunset on this trip but hope to catch one later this month when I return to experience this gorgeous landscape again. I can hardly wait. You can see the Gunnison River toward the middle of this scene as it winds its way along the bottom of the canyon and the gorgeous Grand Mesa in the far distance on the right. Perched at about 8,400 feet along Tioga Road (Hwy 120), this high-country vista point offers sweeping panoramic views south into Tenaya Canyon. The star? The backside (northeast face) of Half Dome rising dramatically in the distance—less familiar than the classic Tunnel View angle but equally stunning, especially with its sheer scale against the surrounding domes. To the east, Tenaya Lake sparkles like a turquoise jewel amid the subalpine landscape, flanked by Clouds Rest, Cathedral Peak, and a sea of glaciated granite domes and peaks.
Named after landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (and his son), who helped shape Yosemite's early preservation, the spot features a large parking area with accessible viewing, interpretive signs, and a tactile bronze model of the valley for all visitors. For the best experience, take the short, hilly 0.25-mile (one-way) paved trail out onto the point itself—it's easy but rewarding, passing glacial erratics (huge boulders dropped by ancient ice sheets) and opening up even wider vistas.
Sunset here is legendary: the warm light bathes Half Dome in alpenglow while the high-elevation air adds crisp clarity. It's wheelchair-accessible from the main lot, making it one of Yosemite's most effortless epic views. Tioga Road is seasonal (typically late May to October), so plan accordingly—summer crowds peak midday, but early morning or late afternoon offers softer light and fewer people.
Pro tip: Bring binoculars to spot climbers on Half Dome's cables (when up), and pair it with a stop at nearby Tenaya Lake for a full high-country loop. This overlook captures Yosemite's raw, high Sierra beauty in one breathtaking sweep!

I was standing on the shore of this lake and the forest preserve police went by in a small motor boat. I waited for the wake to be just right and I hit the shutter button. The ripples in the water really added a nice texture to the foreground of this shot.

On one of my drives a couple weeks ago, my trusty GPS indicated this lake was close by so I headed for it. Its a nice neighborhood with lovely homes but no lakeside park or anything. Some people just have all the pretty spots, dont they?
I came across this "view" and I had to stop and get a shot.
The sunset was beautiful. I couldnt really get any decent shots but I was happy to end up with this silhouette scene.
