Capture at Los Angeles, California Distribution Center off the I710 Highway. 25 spurious shots = 1 great shot :)

I shot this sunset near the Saguaro National Monument outside of Tucson. The scenery in that part of Arizona is truly amazing and the sunsets are great. I used a 75-300mm Nikkor lens (on a tripod) with a Nikon D70s; the lens was at 210mm (315mm in 35mm terms). Because the focal length was so long and the sun was so brilliant in a clear sky, there was really no way to balance the sky and foreground, so I created a multi-layered silhouette of sorts. I'm not sure I like the flare around the sun, but in a clear Arizona sky with a 300mm lens, you're pretty much stuck with it. :) I love the desert and it's amazing just to see scenes like this, let alone be able to photograph them. There is a free tutorial on Shooting Great Sunsets on my site. Here is another shot from the same shoot. Be sure to check out my Photo Tip of the Day blog, too. First sunset encountered in Los Gigantes on Tenerife island.

The sun has slipped below the horizon at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis but an afterglow warms the scene. It's a Friday night and tomorrow many of those boats will be in the water during weekend frolicking.

Independence Pass is at 12,095' elevation on the Continental Divide in the Sawatch Range in Colorado. The top of a really tall mountain is often a great location choice for photographing (or just watching) a sunset, but the best photo (or view) is not always directly into the sun to the west. Really great sunsets also light up the eastern sky and on this particular evening, a storm to the east provided great color over the stark landscape at this pass.

A wide angle landscape photo composed of rock and clouds and captured on a tripod generally would not need ISO increased to 200 to maintain a 1/25 second exposure just to retain sharpness. But, the wind was ripping across the top of this mountain and I was not comfortable even with this 1/25 shutter speed.

There are various ways to deal with wind when photographing, but a solid tripod setup is the first key. Without any other protection from the wind available at the location I was shooting from (such as a vehicle or building), I opted for my frequently-used technique of holding my coat open around the camera and much of the tripod. The coat greatly reduces the amount of wind hitting the camera, yielding a potentially much sharper image – though it leaves me quite cold sometimes. The picture lasts far longer than my coldness.

Taken around False Creek just before sunset during a photo walk around Vancouver, BC. It made for some fantastic light reflections on the city skyline. Kept pulling my camera back out of my backpack.

Not sure how I captures this image, but I took a series about 25 seconds apart as the sun set. There is a fence row of brush and grass between my house and a timber stand where sun drops into on a sunset. This is the sun just as it sits on the fence line. I always thought it looked more like a sea of lava and have not posted any of them before. Also this is just a 2MP camera..Olympus C700 from several years ago.
